Nevermind Hillary's Gender Gap, What Happened With Evangelicals?

The conventional wisdom was that Mike Huckabee couldn't do well in New Hampshire because evangelical voters only comprise a quarter of NH Republican voters (60% in Iowa) but exit poll results from Tuesday's election might suprise you.
Nathan Gonzales at the Rothenberg Political Report has the details.
In Iowa, 60% of GOP caucus goers were self-described born again or evangelical Christian. Huckabee won the group with a commanding 46%. Mitt Romney finished second (19%), Fred Thompson third (11%), and Sen. John McCain tied with Cong. Ron Paul at 10%.
But in New Hampshire, McCain, Huckabee, and Romney fought to essentially a three-way tie (28%, 28%, and 27% respectively) among evangelicals, who made up nearly a quarter of Granite State Republicans.
...
In Iowa, Huckabee won 56% of caucus goers who said that religious beliefs mattered a great deal to them (36% of the electorate). McCain, Romney, and Thompson all tied at 11%, a distant second. But in New Hampshire, McCain defeated Huckabee 34%-28% among voters who prioritized religious beliefs, although their share of the electorate was much smaller (14%) than in Iowa.
And among the one-third of GOP primary voters in New Hampshire who said they attended church weekly, McCain finished first with 32%, Romney second at 28%, and Huckabee third with 24%.
Also,
While McCain did well among evangelicals, he also easily won those who strongly supported civil unions in the state, adding even more complexity to the New Hampshire electorate.
You've sure have to love the way they do things in New Hampshire.

There is no perfect candidate for the presidency. There are many important issues to consider, including the war, immigration, the economy and so on. For me there is one issue that is more important than all these combined, and that is the abortion issue. I intend to vote for a candidate who is pro-life. My reason is quite simple:
When Bush announced his preemptive strike doctrine, I realized that this was a very dangerous policy for a country that believes in the democratic principles. The result? We lost almost 4,000 of our American soldiers, plus this quagmire has resulted in the death of hundreds of millions Iraqis.
This is tragic and extremely expensive. Our once strong dollar, is now worth less than the Euro, and we are borrowing from the Chinese in order to pay for this war. Nevertheless, this pales in comparison to the fifty million of unborn human beings lost as a result of our legalization of abortion, individuals who, had they been allowed to be born, they would be working today to protect our retirement fund which is broken.
I have been accused of being a one issue voter. So be it! Abraham Lincoln was also a one issue voter. We remember him for his stand against slavery, in spite of the failure of his economic plan, but we remember him for defending what is right and good for the country. |

George W. and his manhandlers Cheney, etc., are avowed Imperialist, therefore like in all Empires they, rather than fixing broken borders and enforce the laws of immigration, they go conquering territory in as much as historically in all Empires, all subjects than become defacto citizens of that Empire. Ron Paul is the only candidate of my party that speaks the language of the Founding Fathers, which he has consistently done as Congressman, whereas all the rest with various degrees, are just as imperialistic as the those presently in the Whitehouse, with George W. speaking and acting like a King. Yes as all Empires, America in now full throttle down that disastrous Imperialistic road while Americans by and large are living it up, in materialism and immorality not much different than Pompey. |

Hugh Hewitt continues to cut out callers that won't support Romney. This is one why he is losing. They are so afraid that he will actually have to answer questions about his record, that they won't even take calls from supporters of other candidates.
The excuses are mounting. It was the Evangelicals in Iowa, Independents in New Hampshire.
How in the world does Romney expect to win without Evangelicals and Independents? Mormons? |

Apparently McCain also did well with people who are against the war, better than Ron Paul even. What is up with that? Are people even paying attention? Are they treating this like a reality show? |

Gov Huckabee represents CHANGE, but more importantly he represents HOPE that ordinary folks can make a difference and get things done - He's for changes that will really work!

NH evangelicals decided they didn't much care for the Huckster's religion-baiting, and Huck's record finally caught up with him. Maybe evangelicals aren't so dumb after all. We can only hope the rest of the country also sees the light.
Will evangelicals be duped in SC? |

We're all individuals and not a mindless herd of sheep that follow Dobson, Robertson, et al without question. |
