Heroes in Blacksburg: Preventing Death and Brushing With It
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 6:41 PM
I already linked, earlier today, the story of a 75-year-old Israeli professor who barred a door against the shooter while his students tried to escape. Meet Liviu Librescu, Holocaust survivor and Blacksburg hero:

UNDATED E-mails to the widow of an Israeli engineering professor killed in yesterday's shootings at Virginia Tech say that Liviu Librescu (LIV'-yoo lih-BRES'-koo) saved lives by blocking the doorway of his classroom with his body.

Kevin Sterne's Eagle Scout training saved his own life after a bullet almost severed an artery in his leg:

Dr. David Stoeckle, chief of surgery at Montgomery Regional Hospital, said the student had a 3-centimeter gash in the femoral artery of his right leg:  “He knew he was bleeding to death.”

The student, an Eagle Scout, wrapped a wire cord around his leg to staunch the bleeding, Dr. Stoeckle said.  When emergency medical technicians arrived, they placed a tourniquet belt around the leg and saved his life, the physician said.  The belt can be seen on the student’s leg in the photo.

“He was an incredible guy,”  said Dr. Stoeckle, who declined to name the student because of privacy concerns, although the student was identified later by his parents.
Without the student’s own treatment and the technicians’ action, there’s a good chance he would have died, Dr. Stoeckle said.

The physician said the student is in stable condition and doing very well but added, “I think he’s going to be here a while.”

You may have seen Sterne yesterday:

Gene Cole, a janitor in Norris, was on his way to get a co-worker out of the building after he heard there was a shooter nearby, when he had his own run-in with Cho:

He stepped into a second-floor hallway, and a dark figure emerged from a classroom and began firing a gun at him.

“I was looking at somebody else who was already shot,” Cole said. “I was shot at five times. They went right by my head.”

Cole said the shooter, now identified as Virginia Tech student Cho Seung-Hui, pulled a gun and began firing at him as soon as he moved toward the person on the floor.

The shooter, Cole recalled, wore a hat, blue jeans and a sweatshirt-type of garment. Cole could not see the expression on the man’s face, and the shooter said nothing to Cole as he began to fire, Cole said.

Cole said he ran down a back stairway to get away from the gunfire.

As for his coworker, she continued working on another part of the floor, unaware of the carnage close by. She had heard the gunfire but thought it was related to construction work going on in another part of the building.

Any Where USA
Homeland Security! Does it not include at the very least every major University and College in America
One billion a week in Iraq and we can't figure out
how to safely and totally lock down a university in 15 minutes. Give me 2 choppers with loud megaphones
Give me 250 armed national guardsman in place 30
minutes. Fire engines and ambulances sirens blaring mega phones booming. The national guard arrives in masse and spread out into the dorms, the state police arrive with 6 dogs, they check
two bodies for a scent of the killer they are set loose. Communications walkie talkies all on the same channel 350 armed personal are now in touch with a command base. At 9:45 the killer moves at
9;48 he is dead. Shot 6 times by armed guards.
An all clear is broadcast through the entire
university. Two people are dead. A killer is dead due to the a system called Homeland Security.
No matter when, no matter where if we cannot respond and think and integrate. there will
be many deaths. The tools are there the money
is in Iraq. George Bush answer me! Where is Homeland Security. And who gives you the right to tell us what a terrible tragedy. The tragedy is
that you talk, your cronies talk. But it is an illusion in the wealthiest nation on earth that we do not have the intelligence or the know how to prevent mass murder in your back yard. We
need to wake up folks and get it together. Let
this be a terrible lesson. For what happens when a terrorist or 6 or 12 come to your University or your City. Is anybody ready, know it is a farce of our Government. Think about it a billion dollars a week and we have no system in place
at any Major University. It is a crime that
should have ended quickly with a fine tuned system in place. There was no system and no body in charge and no one ready to say Plan A let's go. We have lost our friends, our children.
It is a tragedy beyond words. May they rest in peace. Now we had better find out why such inept
people are in charge. What were they thinking?
And what did they believe they were doing in the
name of security and saving lives. This was a
disgrace, a killer let loose to murder at will.
I call for a Congressional Investigation with
Homeland Security on the hot seat. Govenor,
where's the system? Senator how much money is allocate for Security at Universities and Colleges. I ask all students to begin to write their Senators and Congressman, ask them where is Home Land Security when it was needed. Wheres
the plans. There are none. God Bless
