ISO: A Little Decency
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 5:26 PM
Having begun my work in politics doing opposition research, I'm no shrinking violet when it comes to campaigns.  After all, in the famous formulation, politics ain't beanbag.  Or, to use another well-worn cliche, if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.  Politics is no place for whiners.

But there are limits.  And it would seem obvious that a "comedy" piece like the kind that appeared on "Saturday Night Live," joking about Todd Palin having incestuous relationships with his daughters -- particularly in light of little Trig's Down syndrome -- is beyond tasteless.  It's ugly, and cruel, and completely lacking in basic human decency.

It will be interesting to see whether and which MSM organization will see fit to denounce the skit.  There's no doubt in my mind that plenty of organizations would trumpet self-righteous wrath were the "joke" not on Sarah Palin, her family and Alaska . . . but rather on those nearer and dearer to their hearts.  (And yes, certainly, a skit joking about an incestuous relationship between Barack Obama and his daughters would be equally disgusting.)

As I note in my Townhall column, all of us have our own sets of biases and preconceptions (which, obviously, we are duty bound to try to transcend, in order to judge people fairly, on their own individual merit).  But even so, surely everyone in a civilized society should be able to agree that the gratuitous cruelty and coarseness of the type apparent in the "SNL" skit is simply unacceptable.

There is no decency in politics...
...not even local.

Redo the SNL skit-with BO
Change nothing else. Release it on video and STAND BACK.

Same for The View's "attack of the harpies"- I wish someone would edit out john McCain's face and put in BO's. Just to see how incongruous the image would be.

No PC here, Mark
Don't worry, I'm not concerned about being PC. I am a TRUE advocate of people's rights, not a "feminist". I am 40 years old. My children have been shown what the 1970's were like, in both civil rights and abortion.

My kids have been taught that MLK is a person to study. My kids have been taught that the Born Alive Infant Protection Act is something we should look at. If anyone can look at the story of Gianna Jessen and NOT question abortion, I don't know what to say.

not politically correct
I'd hate to fall into the Politically correct crowd....One problem with Conservatives today is that we tend to allow ourselves to get beaten up & are not willing to fight back, My statements are personal views that describe my perception of the left's attitude in general, I know some posters don't like point blank statements but, I know they agree with me but are somehow afraid to speak up! They fear to be "blog-beaten" by clever writing Libs....I see your point Julie, but fear not! the truth will set you free....

Mark, Glass Half Full
Has been one of my mantras all of my life, no matter what. Keep up the good work, friend!

I can't wait for the debates!
mark writes: Tuesday, September, 23, 2008 12:59 AM
that's ok
Hey Julie, thanks for the support! King lib has the right to defend the fact that he is always on the wrong side of every subject, he knows it & more importanly we know it! He is the "glass is half empty" type, if you know what I mean...a pessimist, not hopeful, runs to the farthest corner kind of guy...I'll probably get run to filth for my assessment, but I'll wear it as a badge of Honor, getting under the skin of Liberal is always entertaining.
Julie writes: Tuesday, September, 23, 2008 12:53 AM
Mark, point taken
But don't forget that it's in our self interest to refrain from name-calling and such. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you, but many other conservative posters will avoid you, simply because your comments tend to sound angry and defensive. And you have every right to be angry and defensive! But we can't support the McCain/Palin ticket that way.

Nasty liberals insure Republican win
These so-called intellectuals never learn from their mistakes because we have seen this skit before when nasty Democrats insure Republican win.

bottom feeders
Sandra bernhardt, Bill Maher, Janeane Garofalo & their "ilk" have always portrayed the epitomy of the Ultra-psycho-out-of-control-better-than-God-and-smarter-than-you-and-all-knowing-boundary-hating-tradition-breaking lunatics with perfection. These turd for brains idiots are only important in their own minds, any person with even a hint of common sense can tell that these bottom feeders are the usual self loathing mind numb loud mouths called Celebrities. These corrupt individuals are the part of the reason that America is viewed around the world as we are. These unaccountable dum-dums are to many, the face of America, stupid, arrogant & ignorant, with no sense of decency or class.
Julie writes: Tuesday, September, 23, 2008 12:24 AM
Mark, great comments
But, sadly, King Lib will probably be back tomorrow to defend his ridiculous position.

Having a sense of humor, and being able to "poke fun" at people for silly errors (including our own) is a great thing. But this kind of smut is demeaning to all of humankind.

The boundaries seem to expand year by year when it comes to comedy. Unfortunately, I often find myself saying "that's not funny." If rape and incest aren't off-limits, what is?
mark writes: Tuesday, September, 23, 2008 12:03 AM
common sense decency
There are some subjects that are off limits when it comes to jokes...People like king lib have no scruples, absolutely devoid of decency & boundries. To these liberal nit-wits exhibit a kind of arrogance that is sickening & very telling about the kind of people they really are. A sense of humor is a great asset to have but demoralizing humor is not humorous at all, especially for those who suffer the very things that these morons poke so-called fun at. The problem with ultra-liberals is that they exploit their freedom of speech rights to the point it is hurtful & morally demeaning. By reading these blog entries it is easy to see the clear cut difference between a people of conscience, and those who have no use for one.
Julie writes: Monday, September, 22, 2008 11:16 PM
King Lib, once again
proves he'll defend just about anything for his candidate. I seem to recall that King Lib mentioned in a previous post that he's a father, perhaps with daughters. If that is true, I wonder how he would feel if SNL, or any other "comedy show" implied such a thing about him.

And what about that disgusting Sandra Bernhardt and her gang rape comment in regard to Gov. Palin?

They are just trying to incite the McCain/Palin campaign to similar nastiness, but it's not going to work, because they know the obvious:

Incest is NOT A JOKE! Rape is NOT A JOKE!
Dottie writes: Monday, September, 22, 2008 10:56 PM
It is crass
Let's be honest, SNL has not been funny for many years. They may have their moments, but the quality is not there like it used to be. They jumped the shark years ago, and its audience isn't near what it once was.
peacefrog writes: Monday, September, 22, 2008 8:52 PM
King Lib
Only a liberal like yourself whould see comedy in incest. Why do I have the feeling you whouldn't be defending this so called "late night comedy show" if the incest skit was about Obama and his daughter's!
Peggy  writes: Monday, September, 22, 2008 8:35 PM
Tina Fay
If Tina Fay is upset about plating Sarah Palin and wants Obama elected may I suggest we all quit watching SNL.
Dottie writes: Monday, September, 22, 2008 6:59 PM
Decency?
Come on! The left has become increasingly unhinged. They truly think EVERYONE thinks like they do. It will surprise and upset them when they lost the White House yet again. They cannot understand that the average working class American is turned off by their shrill rhetoric.

Amen Carol a taste of what 'O' brings
The Radical Obamacan'ts, are applauded by enemies of America. I pray the empty'headed, brainwashed ObamaRobots, who are asleep at the wheel, will wake up in time to see the darkness at the end of the false Prophets tunnel vision!
The far left clones of Obama are beyond reach!
I was a democrat before the illusionist scared me off! Their ugly, mean Spirited, devious lying and smears towards a wonderful Lady Sarah
has disillusioned and angered me by their lack of decency! How 'low' can the Obama groupies stoop and how long before the supposed to be new kind of politics man will responsibly respond? Don't hold your breath, the insensitive Obama doesn't know any better! Obama is not above the fray, he is the leader of the gung'ho haters and if the teflon divisive Obama wins, our Nation will be terribly Divided. Ex Democrat
LauraG writes: Monday, September, 22, 2008 6:13 PM
The characterless left has no bounds
of common decency. Tastelessness is their way of life. They are totally lacking in humanity, compassion, fairness, decency and goodness; and instead are full of hate, anymosity, spite, selfishness, and a rancorous personna which knows no equal.

I believe them to be capable of anything...ANY THING.

I refer to them as the bast*rd children of Satan, himself, and am very proud to say that I do not personally associate with one single Liberal. I would rather keep company with a leper.
Dose of Reality writes: Monday, September, 22, 2008 6:01 PM
Business as Usual...
What else would expect from Al Franken...He has never been humorous, but I am pretty sure he is "funny"....
Screwtape writes: Monday, September, 22, 2008 5:46 PM
Like Obama's stance on BAIPA
'It's ugly, and cruel, and completely lacking in basic human decency.'

So why be surprized at anything the loons on the way-past-it's-prime SNL do?
