Obama's Credibility Gap --Large and Growing
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 4:09 PM
One of the great aspects of the new blog/feed put together by Peter Robinson and Rob Long is that it allows for a quick survey of all the recent blog posts from the collected center-right authors, which in turn allows for a consensus to reveal itself pretty quickly.

The consensus on yesterday's forum at Saddleback Valley Community Church is that Senator McCain had an exceptional night, that Rick Warren pulled off a very difficult job, and that Senator Obama was smooth as usual except for his "above my pay grade" gaffe, which is one of those phrases that will stick and hurt.

Obama also had on display yesterday a very troubling slipperiness that is increasingly defining him.  The senator has tried, somewhat successfully for the time being, to slip away from his associations with Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko, William Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn.

He has also managed to slip into a "reformer" shtick that has zero connection to his hyper-partisan voting record.

But yesterday he tried to slip past at least two issues on which such obfuscation shouldn't work --same sex marriage and Senate ethics reform.

My point here is not to argue the policy positions Obama takes, but to point out his firm denial of his real positions on both issues.  He flat out distorted his positions, and did so without even an arched eye-brow from the MSM.

The transcripts of the interviews are here.  (HT: Red County).

Obama's distortion of events with regards to Senate ethics reform came up when Rick Warren asked for "an example of when you went against party loyalty and maybe even against your own best interest for the good of America?"

Obama replied:

Well, I'll give you an example that in fact I worked with John McCain on, and that was the issue of campaign ethics reform and finance reform.  That wasn't probably in my interest or his for that matter because the truth was both Democrats and Republicans sort of like the status quo and I was new to the Senate and it didn't necessarily engender a lot of popularity when I started saying, you know, we are going to eliminate meals and gifts from corporate lobbyists. I remember one of my colleagues whose name will be unmentioned who said, "Well, where do you expect us to eat, McDonalds?" and I thought, well, actually, a lot of opur constituents probably do eat at McDonald's so that wouldn't be such a bad thing.  I think we were able to get a bill passed that hasn't made Washington perfect but at least it [is] moving things forward.

Put aside the cloying identification with the McDonald's customers and the wonderfully convenient story of the unnamed senator's cravenness, and just focus on the facts.  Recall, Obama cited McCain here as his cover for acting in a bipartisan or non-partisan fashion.  The detailed account of this "teamwork" from David Freddoso's new book --pp. 97-99, puts the lie to Obama's account.  In fact Obama approached McCain and "promised to work with him seriously on a bipartisan lobbying and ethics reform package," in February 2006. After some work "McCain thought they had an agreement."  Freddoso continues:

Then Obama's party leaders took him aside and set him straight.  They had an election plan, and they weren't about to have [Obama] ruin that by working on both sides of the aisle to accomplish something substantive in 2006.

Freddoso then reprints the account of the Obama double-cross reported by Marc Ambinder, then working for the highly respect National Journal.  Obama sent McCain a letter backing out of the effort..  McCain responded with a blistering rebuke.

"I concluded your professed concern for the institution and the public interest was genuine and admirable," McCain responded.  "[T]hank you for disabusing me of such notions."

No matter what one thinks of the merits of the Obama flip-flop, for him to cite his work with John McCain on Senate reform as the best example of his willingness to work against party and self-interest is more than just oily.  It is deeply deceptive.

As was Obama's response to Warren's question on marriage.

"I am not somebody who promotes same sex marriage, but I do believe in civil unions," Obama flatly stated.

Here's a July 1 blog post from Democracy for America on Obama's position on California's Proposition 8, the marriage amendment on November's ballot:

In a letter read to a gathering of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club on Sunday, Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama reaffirmed his opposition to ballot measures that propose to take away the freedom to marry for lesbian and gay couples, including California's Proposition 8.

This is a tremendous boost to our campaign.

We applaud Barack Obama for his consistent opposition to Proposition 8, the California initiative which would mandate that lesbian and gay couples be treated differently under the California Constitution. We agree with Senator Obama that all people should be treated equally under the law. Senator Obama and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger join millions of Californians who are speaking out against Proposition 8 and standing up in favor of protecting fundamental freedoms.

Please forward this message to all of your friends. Urge them to sign our pledge to Vow to Vote No on Prop 8 today!

Sincerely,

Dale Kelly Bankhead
Campaign Manager
No on 8, Equality For All

Obama lacked the courage to acknowledge his position on Proposition 8 and its centrality to the campaign for same sex marriage not just in California but across the United States.

Obama's casual deceptions are rarely commented on by MSM as its various arms work overtime to facilitate Obama's role as the reforming, non-partisan centrist.

In fact, he's from the way left wing of the Democratic party and has never worked across the aisle on any major initiative, and he regulalry refuses to honestly explain his long held positions.  McCain's straight-forward, direct answers to all questions yesterday may have even been more powerful in stark contrast to the rambling, serial filibusters delivered by Obama, and McCain's answers did not attempt to distort key positions to curry the favor of the audience.  As the campaign moves forward, McCain continue to be well served by candor, and Obama will continue to have to rely of distortion and his friendly dupes in the Fourth Estate.

It is an advantage to be able to say what you truly believe and to be comfortable defending the positions you have actually taken, which means it is an advantage for McCain.

UPDATE: Obama's dissembling on abortion and the Born Alive Infant Protection Bill is now so completely documented that even the Obama campaign is admitting that Obama's past statements on the subject have been misleading:

Indeed, Mr. Obama appeared to misstate his position in the CBN interview on Saturday when he said the federal version he supported "was not the bill that was presented at the state level."

His campaign yesterday acknowledged that he had voted against an identical bill in the state Senate, and a spokesman, Hari Sevugan, said the senator and other lawmakers had concerns that even as worded, the legislation could have undermined existing Illinois abortion law. Those concerns did not exist for the federal bill, because there is no federal abortion law.

And be sure to read about the ongoing cover-up of Obama's relationship with Bill Ayers, as detailed by NRO's Stanley Kurtz.

Obama hurt himself
"above his pay grade" was a cheap dodge. But what pay grade is higher than POTUS? What other decisions are above his pay grade?

Obama is pro choice. He should have said life begins at conception, but I support Roe v. Wade. Of course, Obama does more than support Roe v. Wade, but that would have been a more honest answer than the one he gave.

It is objective fact that human life starts at conception because that is when a human being starts growing. But that fact is an unconfortable one for pro choice people, so they argue that life does not start there. Given his voting record, Obama seems to hold it does not start until some period after you are born.

It is a boy v. a man...
The Saddleback match up demonstrated two things about Obama, he is stunningly immature, and, he is a tragic product of affirmative action, which has left him obcessed with what he perceives is owed to him; thus, he is incapable of enobling risk.

Obama's craptacular answer!
When asked "At what point does a baby get human rights, in your view?," McCain answered "At the moment of conception." Obama's answer here was flaming-dirigible bad:

Whether you are looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity is, you know, above my pay grade...

But what bowls me over about how craptacular his answer here is, did no one on his campaign ever anticipate that he would have to talk about abortion, such that he could come up with a better answer than this? Surely they would have had to expect it at this forum in particular.

"Pay grade"
Really? You know the exact moment life exists? The second the sperm goes into the egg is that moment? Is it when the zygote is formed? Is it when the embryo is created? Or is it when the fetus has its first heart beat? So when Obama say's its above his pay grade he is telling the truth, only God knows the answer to that question. Mccain did what he did all night he pandered and recited campaign talking points, that is why he was so "decisive".

Stop Sugarcoating
Obama was awful last night. I wish MSM would stop sugarcoating his performance with comments about how "thoughtful" he was. The guy sounded like a moron. Somebody tell him to come back in 20 years after he has some experience.

Ex-pat: the economy is a factor, but I don't see any expertise in economics in Obama's background. All I see is a lot of Mickey Mouse government and non-profit experience in his background. The primary economic issue from which all others flow is energy, and he's on the wrong side of that one.

So what am I missing?

In foreign and military affairs, McCain is right about the surge and about Russia and Georgia, while Obama looks weak and uninformed.

In energy and the economy, McCain is on the side on pushing forward for energy independence, while Obama talking about tires, tune-ups, and alternative sources in which Nancy Pelosi has a significant financial stake.

And in the social issues of the day, McCain scores with the right and vast middle, while Obama's lying about his hard-left position on partial-birth abortion--and there is proof that has him lying dead to rights.

I'm finally convinced Obama is toast. He might want to go back on vacation. I can't wait to see the coming McCain ads.

Yup.

The gender is determined at conception, as well as an individually unique DNA.

So, we have an individual male or female.

Next question.

Male or female what?

Human.

The Obama campaign has just released a partial list of issues they feel are also “out of his pay grade” and therefore, off limits in future debates:
1) Any questions regarding Bitter Michelle, White-Racist Rev. Wright, “Unrepentant Terrorist Couple of the Year” Ayers and Dohrn, Tony “Slum Lord” Rezko, and Mayor Daley of Americas most corrupt city, Chicago;
2) Details on his plans for fixing the economy, environment, energy independence, Social Security, Medicare, and Education without completely torching the US economy and endangering National Security;
3) His honest opinions on abortion, Supreme Court appointments, Teachers Unions, what to do with Russia/Georgia situation or any other nasty spat he may encounter, and unilateral nuclear disarmament.
He is however, willing to personally demonstrate how to inflate your tires to demonstrate his compassion for high gas prices.

Your boy is utterly in over his head and the country is in store for a massive display of public embarrassment watching him implode before our very eyes. Next time find someone with a larger dose of character, judgment, and experience. It may stop your losing streak.

For the benefit of our readers, I will send my previous response to this drivel.

"Now I know why you are in Geneva. Do us a favor and stay there - it sounds like Europe is just your cup of tea.

You can't ignore situations like Georgia, especially when Obamaniac wants UN sanctions to define his foreign policy. With Russia in a new mindset, we are likely to see czarism on the move in other Baltic States, and only a tough McCain-like approach has worked in the past. (Remember the Berlin Wall??)

Finally, Americans who have been fortunate enough to avoid overexposure to Teachers Unions know that all of Barry's Income Redistribution/Big Government plans have been tried before and failed. Conservative Values as evidenced by competition, choice, free markets, and capital formation have been the proven hallmarks of Americas amazing, unique success that makes us the worlds preeminent economic power and beacon for the free world.

Tax and Spend, Big Government, Nanny State approaches give us what you are living in Europe. I'll take the free market !!! By the way how is the failing Cap & Trade experiment to reduce carbon emissions going for Europe. I hear they are running for cover as emissions have risen, and the tax hit to the EU is brutal". John McCain more Comfortable
Clearly John McCain was more comfortable in this setting than was Obama. McCain quickly launched into his answers, in my opinion, without trying to word smith his answers inwardly. I thought McCain faired better because he was more real. His answer to why he wants to be the POTUS was heartfelt and real. I think the McCain organization should use excerpts from the Warren interview in ads within key Evangelical areas.

Of course I voted for Bush!!! Did you think I would waste my vote on a man who threw his fellow soldiers under the bus and undermined the country when he came back from war, and tried to lie about it when he was running?? I leave those strong character types to you all on the Left – They seem to be in your wheelhouse. I can still hear Dukakis weakly trying to explain why he would not support the death penalty for the fictional killer of his raped and murdered wife Kitty. Sounds a lot like The Chosen One on abortion doesn’t it ???!!!. There seems to be ABSOLUTELY NO circumstance you guys could support ANY CONSIDERATION OF THE VICTIMS. I do see though that the DNC is actively trying to count these felons votes again this year. Great group of Dems you have there to go along with all the other victims, illegal’s, welfare lifers, and anti-American war protestors in your Big Tent.

I would tread carefully with this character issue since your boy still apparently feels “Ayers and Dohrn are members of the establishment” as he just stated in his over-the-top-I-protest-too-much 42 page rebuttal of Corsi’s new book. I doubt that is the opinion of the majority of the American public, or even the majority opinion of you kooky scamps on the Left, but Barry’s going with it unless or until the polls tell him otherwise. Great cast of old pals !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like all Radical, Leftist/Socialist candidates you all seem to run, we Conservatives just enjoy sitting back and watch you eat your young. Barry got a good start on that process with his pathetic performance last night that even the DailyKookers hated, so I am EXTREMELY CONFIDENT he will do all the heavy lifting for us and, the McCain-led Republicans will save the country from the extreme Left once again.

Instead of pretending like you know the character of the candidates based on phony news reports from Worldnet daily, or his "friendships" with people he has met a few times, vote on the issues and ability to lead. George W. Bush has been an abject failure, possibly one the worst Presidents in our history, definitely in the top 10 worst. But hey, at least you feel like you could have a beer with him. Talking about character, examine Mccains. Heres a man who cheated on his first wife after she was disfigured, befriended a man who caused the S & L crisis, has flip flopped on every single important issue (sans abortion) over the last 8 years. He OPPOSED Bush's tax cuts, now supports them, OPPOSED offshore drilling, now supports it, decried the "agents of intolerance" now embraces them, promised to run an honorable campaign, now says Obama would rather lose a war than lose an election, fought for comprehensive immigration reform, now opposes it, supported both Ginsberg and Breyer now claims he would never vote for a liberal justice, etc etc.

McCain doesn't need to define "rich" because he wants to LOWER everyones taxes and ATTACK SPENDING to fix the problems with the economy, rather than participate in class warfare like Barry does. Get it?

The top 1% of wage earners already pay over 30% of the burden - how much more should they pay for your failed Big Government plans? 50%...80%...100%??? Am I going too quickly for you ???

If you on the Left HAD A CLUE how the most basic economic principles of competition, choice and capital formation, impacted job growth and therefore, economic expansion, you might understand why America is great. Go to Europe for your Nanny State or better yet, start a small business and participate in the American Dream. Then you will see how the productive side of the country sees the issue.

So here's my question; I know Barack Obama is a slithering, deceptive politician, and most people reading here know that too. But will the rest of the American people be told? The MSM unfortunately seems to bent on making sure they won't know, and that's how most voters get their information, right? So who will tell the people? I fear that in the end, with all that we know about Barack Obama as a politician and leader that is not good, no one will ever be told. And then all this discussion will simply be a moot point.

I have a tough time trying to understand the parallel universe you live in, but let’s see if I’ve got it. McCain is the flip-flopper and Obama is the one who holds every original position he takes ????????????? Truth is, lots of people change their minds, but understanding the reasons why provides a window into the content of a mans character. I’ll take McCain’s approach of doing it for a good reason like advocating more drilling because gas is $4.00 a gallon and crushing the economy, verses Barry endorsing more drilling because he is plunging in the polls and is desperate to get on the right side of the electorate on the issue. Nice character your boy displays on that one.

But let’s stay really current because the news cycle is moving fast this year. You must have loved The Chosen One’s performance last night. Let me summarize his impressive accomplishments:
1) The three major influences in his life are his bitter wife, his white-racist grandmother he threw under the bus for his “long time mentor” Rev. Wright, and …drum roll please…TED KENNEDY !!! McCain’s were genuine war hero Gen. Petreus, black civil rights pioneer John Lewis, and Meg Whitman, the founder of EBay. Let’s give this one to McCain OK?
2) He cites as his shining example of making tough decisions by reaching across the aisle to work with Republicans was his work in 2006 with McCain on ethics reform in the Senate. It was a very unpopular and thorny issue and Barry had given John his word that he would support the bipartisan effort. But, darn it, those pesky Libs in the Senate went ballistic when they found out he was sleeping with the enemy right before a critical election, and, good lackey that he is, Barry caved in to the Dems, and broke his word.(There is that character issue again) McCain sent him a scathing rebuke and basically told him to go pound sand. McCain again, huh?
3) His best moment though was saved for his only transcendent truth of the whole night when he bravely informed the American public that, unfortunately, answering a simple question on when life begins was “above his pay grade”
Game, Set, Match for McCain. I know the truth hurts but maybe you guys will have better luck in 2012 when Hillary gets to run. ICAN’T WAIT !!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm trying to be patient with you, but it would really help the IQ of our discourse if you could stay on topic.

In America, everyone has an equal chance to reach their highest potential regardless of their individual life circumstances. We are the beacon that attracts millions of people in other countries to us who are not blessed with the wonderful gifts our Constitution and liberties have provided each and every one of us.

Our values were founded upon the principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness which has freed us to invent an unprecedented economic system that is the envy of the planet. This system is based on encouraging healthy competition, creating choices of options, incenting capital formation, helping ALL citizens keep the bulk of their earnings with low taxes, and LIMITED GOVERNMENT.

EVERY US CITIZEN benefits from this efficient structure because it incents small business growth which fuels the entrepreneurial spirit that drives the economy, and gives each of us an opportunity to succeed. If you wish to take more risk and reap the hopeful rewards, you are free to do so. You will probably generate more income than someone who plays it safer, and works for one of our many thriving corporations, but at the end of the day, the choice is YOURS !!!
Reagan Values writes: Sunday, August, 17, 2008 11:22 PM

In either case the CHOICE IS YOURS, NOT THE GOVERNMENTS like nearly every other country in the world. You see, individual FREEDOM AND ACCOUNTABILITY creates PROFITS. This trumps the bureaucratic inefficiencies of government due to the inherent waste and corruption that approach engenders.

So when you say things like “allow the wealthy their yearly bonuses”, my response is: 1) Bravo for Profits and Bonuses because that implies success, and 2) Thank God we live in a country where no one person, especially one as uninformed as you, or government can “allow” any other person to keep, or not keep, the fruits of their hard earned labor. You have just described how Socialism works, and you are welcome to participate in their failing experiment simply by moving to Europe. Why don't you give it a try and let me know how it goes. You might consider taking The Messiah with you because he seems to identify more with the European structure, and really needs to learn a lot more before we could ever allow him to lead us.

Do yourself a favor also and pick up Stephen Covey’s book “7 Habits of Highly Successful People”. It may motivate you to join the dream, rather than wait for me, or worse Barry, to take care of you.

How McCain Won Saddleback
The contrast was striking throughout each man’s one-hour time on stage. When Warren asked Obama, “What’s the most gut-wrenching decision you’ve ever had to make?” Obama answered that opposing the war in Iraq was “as tough a decision that I’ve had to make, not only because there were political consequences but also because Saddam Hussein was a bad person and there was no doubt he meant America ill.” But Obama was a state senator in Illinois when Congress authorized the president to use force in Iraq. He didn’t have to make a decision on the war. That fact was a recurring issue in the Democratic primaries, when candidates Hillary Clinton, Joseph Biden, Christopher Dodd, and John Edwards argued that they, as senators, had to make a choice Obama didn’t have to make. And now he says it’s his toughest call.

When McCain got the question, he was able to tell an old story with a sense of gravity and poignancy that he seldom shows in public. He described his time as a prisoner of war, when he was offered a chance for early release because his father was a top naval officer. “I was in rather bad physical shape,” McCain told Warren, but “we had a code of conduct that said you only leave by order of capture.” So McCain refused to go. He made the telling even more forceful when he added that, “in the spirit of full disclosure, I’m very happy I didn’t know the war was going to last for another three years or so.” In one moment, he showed a sense of pride and a hint of regret, too; he came across as a man who did the right thing but not without the temptation to take an easy out. In any event, the message was very clear: John McCain has had to make bigger, more momentous decisions in his life than has Barack Obama.

The intent of Warren was to ask blunt questions and, at one point, playfully warned Obama: “Don’t give me your stump speech on these." Warren did not challenge McCain when he recited his stumped speech. Mc Cain did not openly discuss his faith. Repeatedly, Mc Cain gave his stump speech. There was not anything introspective about his answers. Even his war stories were canned. While Obama quoted a Biblical proverb and spoke at length about his faith as a "source of strength and sustenance on a daily basis." Obama gave a Christian interpretation to his generally political views. Obama described many of his positions, even on taxes and energy, in the language of a devout Christian. None of this was forthcoming from McCain. When McCain was asked what his faith meant to him, McCain said it “means I’m saved and forgiven.” Then, he moved away from that as soon as possible. He referenced the works of his Southern Baptist church in Phoenix, and his reliance on prayer during his captivity in Vietnam. He never flushed out the answer.

Failure of First Marriage
I was surprise to learn that the most the most gut-wrenching decision McCain ever had to make was not leaving his sick wife. She had be faithful and waited for his return from war. McCain said his greatest personal moral failing was the “failure of my first marriage.” He did not explain why the marriage failed. There should have been further discussions on this. Warren, who was critical of former Sen. John Edward’s ability to lead after he admitted he had an affair, did not take this question to McCain.

Stump Speech
Obama did what he has promised to do, to be a different kind of leader. He took the questions as they were asked and answered them honestly and personally. McCain did what he was used to, politicking and pandering. Of course, he stayed on message, because he gave his stump speech. So, McCain rehearse performance was better. We shouldn't be surprised, Hillary did the same thing. But after awhile people began to see that the sound bites aren’t sufficient and they drifted toward the more complete answers and solutions that Obama offers. I have confidence, the American people are smarter than they are treated!

Watching contrasts
Katharina and I, kgk, watched last night and were first surprised how Warren was fair to both. After all, what the lefties on the forum do not get as of yet is : Dems for 50 years have been losing the Evangelical , many Catholic and Pentecostal votes. It was a strategy by both Hil and BO to court these voters by using rhetoric, certainly not actions, to convince these Christian voters to go Dem. Last night, BO was very clever but I doubt moved many Christians to his side. They will not forget the Dem Platform or his views on abortion, capital punishment, appointment of jurists, war and peace, partical birth, redistribution of someone else's wealth, and of course other issues such as tax hikes, and energy=drill, drill et al. And most surprising of all, McCain was actually a real person. Sure he is flawed but compared to Obama, one can instantly , if not a radical, see who is really ready to be President. And it is not the faux Messiah.

I was completely blown away with his humility when answering this question. It showed he could discuss a rotten period of his life. My heart was totally softened to hear a man admit to a regret from 30 years ago. In addition, this issue is 3 decades old and has been vetted over and over. John McCain is not perfect, but his answer shows he has humility and the last 30 years has shown to me he has proven he can be a faithful man and a family man.

We must have been watching a different debate. The one I saw showed a confident McCain exposing his well thought out, experienced, passionate point of view. If it seemed rehearsed, well unlike Barry, he is not a virgin to this process. I guess you missed The Messiah's heart felt, but refreshinigly honest answer to that beastly tough question regarding the point at which life begins with his now epic retort...drum roll please... "providing specificity on that question is out of my pay grade". Is this the guy America should trust to lead the greatest country in the world??????????

He couldn't stop there though and continued to expose himself as weak, uninformed, nuanced, and clueless. He offered that his finest example of reaching across the aisle to work with Republicans was when he promised to team with McCain on ethics reform in 2006. Problem is after giving Mac his word to cooperate, he caved to pressure from the do-nothing Dems in the Senate who scolded him for helping Mac with critically needed legislation just before the 2006 mid term election. Being the gutless lackey that he is, he wrote Mac to tell him he changed his mind. Mac thanked him for showing his true colors to Mac so early in his career, and promised to never trust his word again. And THAT is his crowning achievement ???????????????? This type of transparency works well with Dems until real thinking voters (you know who we are) start to inspect the latest candidates the Dems roll out each election cycle.

Looks like another tough year is in store for you all on the Left. Maybe things will go better in 2012 when Hillary can finally run. So far I have counted five different positions he has taken since it started, before he finally stooped to pleading with Biden to go over there and try to talk the Russians to death. Unfortunately Biden had lunch with Al Gore before he left and Gore cast some voodoo global warming curse on him by mistake. The unfortunate result has been that whenever Biden opens his mouth to speak, he sucks all of the CO2 out of the atmosphere. This in turn is really pissing off all of the Europeans because they can't justify their new Cap & Trade carbon emissions plans any longer, and are scrambling to see what massive new tax they can invent to pay for their rapidly failing Socialist programs. Obama's plan for America
As a socialist, Obama believes in complete equality of income for everyone, with no one entitled to be "richer" than anyone else.

To achieve this equality, Obama would like to mandate that ALL wages for ALL jobs in the United States should be equalized at the current national average wage. The current national average wage is something like $40,000/year per job. So all jobs should pay this amount.

Now, that would be total equality -- everyone would earn the same thing. That means that airline pilots would earn the same thing as cab drivers; doctors would earn the same thing as janitors; engineers designing bridges would earn the same thing as burger-flippers at McDonalds; the researcher who invents life-saving antibiotics would earn the same as the shoe-shine man at the airport. See? That would eliminate the evil rich and put us all on the same footing.

Ask yourself how long we'd have doctors, airline pilots, engineers, researchers, etc. if this plan were imposed. Ask yourself what your life would be like without the products such people make possible. Or just move to North Korea and experience it first hand.

That's what Obama wants for America.

Obama should've been ready
I watched the rebroadcast last night because I was actually at revival services on Saturday night. But I made a point to stay up and watch because of Obama's "above my pay grade" remark. I figured there had to be a more expansive answer that he gave. He gave a much longer answer but it really didn't do anything to help clarify why he is so unsure and how he comes to err on the side of abortion against the side of life.

You're going into a forum that is hosted by an evangelical. You know the life issue is going to come up. He really should have been ready with a well thought out position that reached out to evangelicals who are much more solid on the issue but appreciate the difficulties. Instead, he evaded the issue and then proceeded to blow smoke.

I though Obama generally came across well. He did come across more as thoughtful this time as opposed to uncomfortably parsing a position on the fly that puts him on both sides of an issue. But don't mistake slow deliberate style as "thoughtful". His answers on the tough, predictable questions did not demonstrate any prior deep introspection. If you aren't ready to answer a question that has roiled American politics for 30 years, and you are giving a slow, deliberate answer, you are showing symptoms of shallowness, not thoughtfulness.

pleasantly surprised
I do not like Rick Warren. I do not like his "Purpose Driven Church" methodology of church takeover. But I though his performance was good, and I thought the exercise worthwhile, much to my surprise. I understand the lack of follow-up in the format. Perhaps, if there were to be a "round two", the questions could be limited, both sides could be on the stage, and the moderator as well as the candidates could follow up.

I think it is unfortunate that we have to resort Rick Warren to have a substantive forum on social policy that fairly addresses the questions of evangelical voters from their perspective. It is a testimony to the utter failure and bias of the media.

My biggest surprise was McCain. I expected him to move to the middle, or at least uncomfortably mouth the right things. Some topics he has historically been uncomfortable discussing he gave characteristically brief answers. Others that I expected him to uncomfortably, but dutifully, answer, he showed a level of enthusiasm that was reassuring. He did mention global warming, but did not seem to have the desire to pick that scab that he sometimes seems to enjoy doing. And he seemed genuinely enthusiastic about Roberts and Alito.

The jury is still out on McCain for me, but I am more and more inclined to give him a try. The jury has always been in on Obama and he did nothing that would cause me to give him a retrial.

Obama not good on humility
Dean Barnett's analysis of "above my paygrade":

Imagine as a thought experiment that Obama answered Warren’s straight-forward question honestly. He could have taken the extreme pro-choice position that the fetus doesn’t get human rights until some time around its Bar Mitzvah. Or he could have taken the more mainstream liberal position and said he believes that life begins at conception (strongly as a matter of the utmost faith), but he doesn’t want his personal feelings to intrude on the issue. But if he said either of those things, some people wouldn't have liked his comments and probably would have liked him less for making them. So instead he opted for clumsy evasion.

With his flippant pay grade remark, Obama said in effect, “I’m not going to give you my thoughts on the matter because it would be politically inconvenient to do so. Whatever I say, it will upset one side of the debate, and who needs that hassle? Instead, I’m going to try to charm you with a phony display of humility and hope you don’t notice.”

The thing about evasions is they only go unnoticed if they’re done with great skill. By straddling and evading with great frequency and occasional clumsiness, Obama ironically reveals more of his true self than straight talk ever would.

$5million
McCain was exactly right in his prediction on his $5million number being distorted. The commentary I saw immediately afterward noted that he was joking, but still characterized it as a gaffe that would likely be exploited. Of course, they are blind (or are they) that their characterization is exactly the kind of exploitation McCain predicted.

McCain spent nearly the whole answer to Warren's question disagreeing with the whole premise that we should even be defining "rich", especially for the purpose of taxing them even more heavily. He threw out $5MM as an answer obviously in a joking manner to emphasize the silliness of the whole exercise. And he then proceeded to talk about small business owners who work 16 hour days that may make $200k or so and question whether they should be targeted for higher taxes because other folks consider them rich. To seriously put out the $5MM number as McCain so rich that he is out of touch would be very dishonest, but typical of the dems and MSM.

I can see Obama's rationale for his $250k benchmark, but McCain's answer hints at why it would be unwise to increase the tax burden down to that level on the mistaken presumption that they are rich and can afford it.

So, if Jefferson knew, and he told us, why doesn't Obama, the One, know? He can't read? Maybe he disagrees.

However, he said recently that a father's responsibility doesn't end at conception.

That means that he feels responsibility begins at conception. Is that all? If the father's responsibility begins at conception, doesn't life also??? After all, responsibility for what, if not life?

Obama's non-answer to a critical question is the kinda answer one who agrees with abortion, who doesn't wanna answer the question cuz he wants us to keep guessing so he can go on being non-committal and appear to be committed. In other words, he wants to deceive.

Briggsy -- no bright line for Obama
Since when has Obama been interested in drawing bright lines? He has to know that there is a substantial bloc of evangelicals and catholics who can be moved to re-prioritize the life issue. Indeed, Saddleback is probably the perfect venue to deal with the issue that is probably the biggest stumbling block with the mushy religious middle. he drew his line just fine, but did nothing to illuminate the real struggle that he has in reconciling his position with his doubts about when life begins and when it can be protected.

They sure wanted to hear it--he got lots of applause. I wanted to hear it, even though I have no intention of voting for him. And I definitely want to hear why he thinks a court should be the final word on how a society should be governed. The sticky social issues for evangelicals are all ones that have popular support (as evidenced by passing legislation or referenda) that have been thwarted by courts. It is the left's social agenda that has been imposed, not the religious right's.

If Obama can't feel like he can reach out to evangelicals in probably the most friendly forum ever, then why should they feel any confidence that he will treat them fairly should he gain office?

"Really? You know the exact moment life exists?"

Yup.

The gender is determined at conception, as well as an individually unique DNA.

So, we have an individual male or female.

Next question.

Male or female what?

Human. ==

That's correct!

46 chromosomes = human creature. All 46 chromosomes are present at conception, when a woman becomes pregnant. She does not become pregnant when the doctor tells her she is pregnant. She is pregnant at conception, the time when, as Jefferson says in the Declaration of Independence, we are all created. Also, as Jefferson says, that's when the Right to life begins.

So, is what she is pregnant with part of her, or part of a new creature? It's a completely new creature.

McCain's consistency over time is at least one indicator that what he says is actually what he believes.

If the Legislative defines "personhood" as beginning at conception, the notion of "undue burden," as defined by Roe, will change to due burden.

That means that the State will not seize the woman's body, rather protect the constitutional Rights of the person inside her. After all, the Constitution protects persons.

However, the State will require that the woman maintain her health and see to it, as much as she can, that the unborn person lives. The unborn person would be in her protective custody.

==What's wrong with Obama's going into the lion's den and just stating the Dem platform?==

==Protection under the law begins at live birth to a viable baby.==

Not true.

Inheritance/family law says that "future interests" begins at conception. In other words, the unborn child cannot enjoy that unless he survives.

==If viability is deemed in doubt, allow the baby to die if you choose.==

A child 5 seconds old has lived for five seconds. So, what's "viability"? The child was viable for 5 seconds. Who gets to decide that viability must be a specific length of time, and what is that length of time? The thing is alive until it is dead. That may be one second. It may be 65 years.

Viability is not constant in all. The only constant is conception. It is the same in all. IT happens at the same time for all; it happens when it happens.

Would Jesus Approve Abortion?

To be Liberal is to self-describe as being “tolerant.”

Jesus was not tolerant. He was intolerant, and that is not bad. He said that He is the ONLY Way to the Father, and that few will find the gate to Salvation cuz it is so narrow, not broad.

He said that He came to give life, and more abundantly, and to take away the power of death.

Abortion takes life without the process that is due, per the Constitution. Abortion restores the power of death, denying the power of Jesus.

They will say that we can’t kill something that isn’t alive; but why, for example, does an partial birth abortionist have to stick a scissors into the base of the child’s skull before he removes the child? Could it be that he knows the child is alive and that removing the child without poking the child with the scissors, he would deliver a live child, hmmmm? So, he knows the child is alive. He kills.

Deuteronomy 30
CHOOSE LIFE!

Proverbs 6
God hates abortion cuz God hates the shedding of innocent blood. There is no more innocent blood than that of the unborn in what is supposed to be the safest place for him in the world.

5th and 14th Amendments
Abortion denies the life of the child, precluding — even if we accept the notion that life begins at birth — the child’s potential life. That’s denial. Precluding life.

Leviticus 17
The life of the flesh is in the blood. Even in the chromosome that produces blood. So, where there’s blood, there’s life.
Exodus 21
The unborn child, alive. You take the life of the unborn child, your life is forfeit.
Genesis 4
Innocent blood cries out to God to avenge the taking of innocent blood.

Isaiah 49

Jeremiah 1
God knew each of us in the womb.
Genesis 25
God oversees development. He knows the unborn child, his future, his character and his temperament.

Luke 1

Why are Christians silent as dumb dogs [Isaiah 56]? They are afraid to offend the world. The Obamarama Version of the Word of God, a version that waters down Jesus to suit Libs, that a tolerant, Lib Jesus actually says something like this:

“Goeth into all the world and teacheth men to liveth as they wish, urging each to pursue and findeth his own path to God.

“Letteth not any one of you maketh another to feel inferior, nor victiminized, because of their beliefs. Above all, I saith unto you, be tolerant, even of those who choose not to follow Me.

“Verily, verily, I saith unto you that what you believe and how you live do not matter, as long as you are pure of heart in your own judgment and might and in your pursuits.

“I am a way to God, a truth and just one possible life, and, if you are a good person, you walk that way, that truth, that life, for that is all it takes, and, if you choose not to come to the Father through Me, rather through some other, simply being a good person will enter you into the Kingdom of Heaven regardless of the way you choose.

“Now, goeth forth into all the world to liveth according to the strength and ways of your own conscience, dreams, wishes and vision.”

And, so…

Why does Obamarama say he's Christian at once saying that a father's responsibility does not stop at conception, and also that the question of when human Rights attaches to us is above his pay grade?

Why would a person who professes to be Christian not try to find the Will of God?

After all,

(Isa 41:26) Who hath declared from the beginning, that we may know? and beforetime, that we may say, He is righteous? yea, there is none that sheweth, yea, there is none that declareth, yea, there is none that heareth your words.

(Amo 4:13) For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.
