That Classic Fox Bias (Updated With Poll Reax, Both Sad and Happy)
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 1:11 PM

The Fox/Opinion Dynamics Poll finds Dems up 13 on the generic ballot.

RNC tools!

Update: Allah gets gloomy. Join him if you wish.

Oh well. All that newfound optimism was making me uneasy anyway. It’s always better to be pessimistic — that way you can never be disappointed.

My optimism, on the other hand, is the Rocky of political outlooks. Keep punching it, and it'll keep standing up, maybe even after you start feeling sorry for it. But just remember, it's that kind of dumb, brutish, determined hope that brought Rocky win over Apollo Creed, and one over Ivan Drago, okay? And, no, I don't want to talk about the Clubber Lang fight.

Update: John Hawkins predicts a House loss of 22-29 seats.

Update: Obi Wan weighs in with guarded optimism. I like it. I like it a lot.

He sees two possible concerns: 1) whether the wave that we've seen in the generics continues, or whether it was like a pendulum, and will fade or swing back by Election Day and 2) some sort of scenario where with all the close races, too many Republicans fall just short. Clearly, while the outlook is much better for Republicans than just a week ago, the party isn't out of the woods yet.

He describes himself as "happily befuddled"; he says the possibility is there for a Hollywood ending - angry at the negative campaign, and want to support the president in a good old 1950s way. Right now, nobody should rule anything out.

MK - I never saw anything beyond Rocky III. At that time, I was in the middle of putting myself through a private high school, working 35 hours a week (That would be illegal now...) and taking AP courses. As cheesy as III was, it gave me some hope and motivation. God, where would I be without Balboa and Reagan? (HA)If I'm an attorney now, how much worse could it be?

Having grown up since then, I can now recognize that, in spite of it's motivational value, Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" wasn't a particularly good song.

The only political analyst I would consult is Jay Cost, who ran the Horse Race blog during the 2004 election. Ignore Hawkins--he's a moron.

From my perspective, these races have too many moving pieces to give an honest assessment as to who's going to take control--each voter has a different calculus, from who he's going to put in charge of the Senate (I'm sure that's playing in Montana & New Jersey), to who's going to "get us out of Iraq" (though Congress doesn't really have the power).

Yeah, I know he lost the first time. I just goofed and was thinking they fought twice after that. You know, thinking back on it, Rocky actually wins very few fights during the five movies. It's a loss to Apollo, draw with Hulk Hogan (Thunderlips??), one win against Apollo, loss to Mr. T, win over Drago, and the last one is just lame Tommy Gunn and depressing. Are there wins I'm missing?

Rocky didn't win the first one over Appollo. He went the distance, but lost.

Like Santorum, but also like Cardin.

That's a Fox bias of 7 percentage points!
