There's been a lot of talk about Huckabee's Christmas ad featuring the "flying cross" -- or bookshelf -- depending on whom you ask.
As you may have heard, liberal ad gury Donny Deutch described the ad as "frightening."
I wanted to ask a professional Republican ad man his thoughts on this, so I talked to Paul Wilson of Wilson Grand Communications.
Wilson believes the flying cross was most likely a happy accident. According to Wilson:
Technically they "could" have done the shot two ways:
Green screen and passing (floating) a full motion picture of the sceene behind him.
The second way is to have the Governor sit there and have a dolly on a track move to let the background "spin" as we say in the biz.
Here's my guess what happen. They wanted to reveal the Christmas tree. So whichever way they did the shot the tree had to "appear." Either live with the dolly as they started to see the shot for the 3rd or 4th take they "discovered" what they had created--the floating cross. They then said "cool" -- that works.

Only one candidate has a good ad. It's not Rudy, Mitt, John, or Mike. It's someone that has the C-L-A-S-S not to use the ad to promote himself, he simply wants us to thank those that serve.
You can see his ad here... http://www.fred08.com/

doesn't get it. Whether it's Huckabee or a dark horse from a brokered Republican convention, social conservatives of all political affiliations refused to capitulate to the LGBT line and staff of the RNC and RSCC knowingly foisting four social liberals (Romney, McCain, Giuliani, and Thompson) on the base of the Republican Party. Fight's on for the federal appellate and the SCOTUS. We're prepared......are you? |

Beyond the few shills for Huck, the commentary has been excellent. I would like to thank Federal Court Watcher for the information on the key issue of Abortion and ris46 for pointing out that he is a liberal and appeals to their kind. Though I realize that ris46 is a loon, but this is vital information that should scare away any real conservative from voting for him. I find Mike Huckabee appalling. He is clearly a liar and wolf in sheep's clothing. he would set the Republican party back 50 years if elected. Though I still have issues about Mitt Romney, he seems the only candidate with desire to act like Regan that has a possibility of winning the election. With choices like dishonest Huckster and liberal Giuliani, Romney is the only viable choice. We cannot allow the party to follow the path of the past by electing moderates on the border and security. As for the cross, It was obviously an intentional placement. There was enough light on that "Bookcase" to nearly start it on fire. That would have been really great if the cross lit on fire, Then we could say it was the burning cross of God on fire telling us to vote for Huckabee. It was a Christmas miracle. Please have common sense, he is a player, he has a team that includes some of the best names in politics. He is a slimy politician, not a saint. |

There is no cross in the ad.
It is a bookshelf.
Yes, it would be great if there was a cross in the ad, but the thing is a bookshelf.
I watched it several times and just saw a bookshelf. Even after hearing the leftist loons talk about a floating cross, I still just saw a book shelf.
It was not until seeing it pointed out by the leftists on their shows did I notice that what they were talking about was the bookshelf.
I was amazed at the hatred and hostility they would go through and the bogus charges that they would make against someone just because this person is a conservative Christian and supported by many conservative Christians.
Who in the world spends their time studying blurred backgrounds on ads anyways?
If this is going to hurt anyone it will be the people who are saying all of this and their Romney since Romney people are the main ones along with the leftists who are going into panic mode over this. |

that the cross was an accident. In the words of so many on TH, "Plllllleeeeeeeeze"! The issue is not the cross! It was a very well done ad and I don't care if it had a thousand crosses. The real issue is - does anyone really believe that the Huckatrickster and/or a hundred "aides" didn't look at this ad a thousand times before it's release and say, "cool, did you see the way that cross magically slides in behind the Huckabilly". And when the first commentary hit the air Huckasneaky said, "Whaaaaaaaat, what cross, huh, I didn't put no cross in that ad, it was "just a shelf". Again, "Pleeeeeeeze"! All supporters of this ruse are either outright liers or you have your head waaaaay down in the sand because you want to believe that the Huckapreacher would never lie. Come on people!!! |
|
The two-faced, double standard, back stabbing media conservatives are more and more showing their true colors for their sell-out to Romney or Thompson.
The facts are that this is muddslinging among republicans, and normally they would be trying to speak against such non-sense. But their conservativism is not real, it is fake.
Huckabee made a peaceful and good Christmas ad folks, and that was all it was.
All the people throughing a fit over this sound like nutcases and liberals. Just look at what the liberals say about the bookcase, then compare it to what the fake conservatives are saying. The simularities are amazing. |

Today I read a deadly article about Huckabee supporting Embryonic Stem Cell Researchers by taking $35,000 U.S. Dollors from a Company named "Novo Nordisk" that proves Mr. Mike Huckabee the Former Gov. of Arkansas, is only interested in getting more bribe money, rather than taking the Conservative Pro-Life Poistion even when tempted by Money. "Novo Nordisk" is one of the Worlds Largest Research Companies, that does work on "Human Embryonic Stem Cells".
I finally have proof of What I always have suspected. Which is, that Huckabee is our current day Richard Nixon. Corrupt to the core of his inner being. I am Pro Life, and I am glad more fellow Moral People can see the Huckabee for the man he "Chose" to be, as Governor of the State of Arkansas.
Below is the link to the article which proves Huckabee, is the New "Slick Willie" of Arkansas.

Huckabee wanted the Cross in the background and got it, but when asked if it was intentional he lied. "It's (not) only a bookshelf." I am not offended by the Cross and would like to see more overt testimonies of one's Christian faith. But geez, Governor, don't lie about it. Are you so ashamed of Jesus that you had to deny him...so far, once? Go Mitt GOP. |
|
The ad had an overt Christ-mas message no need for subliminal bookshelf crosses.
Here's Huckabee's honest behind the scenes frame by frame explanation. Check it out for yourself:

that Mike Huckabee's response. No need to be so defensive, all he needed to say was I approved of this message and was pleasantly surprised by all the viewers noticing the bookcase that was interpreted as a cross after all the cross does remind me of the reason for the season. |
|
The worst thing Huckabee's opponents are doing is reading intent into a commercial, and not taking it at face-value.
The moment you start stringing together a narrative to suit your own purposes and desired explanation of things is the moment you engage in self-delusion. Such has happened to those who claim that Huckabee is an anti-Mormon bigot, and that he's using subliminal messages.
There is one happy accident that arises from all of this though. It exposes such unhinged people for the lunatics that they are. And yes, I say this as an atheist. |
|
|
I'm not a Huckabee supporter, but not only found his message acceptable, but have NEVER found myself offended by a Christian Cross. |
|
"In Sunday's Cincinnati Enquirer, Democratic Governor of Ohio, Ted Strickland, said Huckabee is his personal favorite among the Republican presidential candidates. Strickland explains: "But he's the kind of combination of conservative views in some ways, but very, almost liberal views in other ways."
With the liberal Ohio Governor Ted Strickland's endorsement of Huck there can be no question that Huck is the most electable candidate. Huck will be a serious contender for a substantial number of democrat votes. This makes him very electable. I on the other hand will probably (this makes my skin crawl) vote for a democrat on election day if Huck is our candidate. At least then we won't have a bigoted wolf in sheep's clothing running our country from Jimmy Carter La La land. |
|
I don't think we usually agree but we agree on this. It was just a "happy accident" that the lighting magically cut if off in the form of a perfect cross. People who know stuff about advertising cringe at this kind of stuff. If he wants to put up a cross, throw a crucifix in there, it was a Christmas commercial anyway, but to do it in such a deceitful way and lie about it...well...what does it say in the bible about lying?
You know, look at the shadow, how did the middle of the bookshelf look like a noon sun is beating down on it and a couple inches to the right is dark as midnight. Huck wants us to believe that it is a miracle like Jesus toast. If he just put up a crucifix most of us wouldn't be complaining and he would only have to put up with the radical atheists and socialists at the MSM who worship the State.
Yeah wise woman I would like to see him debate issues, but he only speaks in folksy parables. Huck what do you think about Iraq? "Well my momma said at pottery barn...we are one nation under God." And whatever he thought he would accomplish with his "Brer Rabbit" parable in Foreign Affairs, why didn't he just fax the CFR a picture of his middle finger, or at least provide them with a second translation in English? The Neocon Standard was having a good old time with that one. |
|
|
But Huckabee is lying about it. The same way he told us that the unprovoked question to the NYT reporter was unplanned and an honest question. He seems to have a habit of claiming innocence, when his lying is obvious. |
|
It is still a nice Christmas message.
Let's debate issues. Huck is a former minister. If he wanted a religious symbol in the background, he got it.
He's putting his best foot forward - which is fair.
If he had other reasons, it is still his business.
My business is inside the ballot box and Mitt has my vote. |
|
If Huck had not made his entire campaign about religion-baiting!
If you believe this was nothing more than a "happy accident", maybe you should get out more and read what most pundits are saying, like Michael Reagan:
http://newsmax.com/reagan/Huckabee_Strategy/2007/12/20/5872 7.html
Huck saying this was a happy accident is just more BS.
|
|
FWIW, I make TV commercials for a living, and my best guess is this was a happy accident.
Mike says they filmed it in 2 takes in a living room in Arkansas. |
|
Why should it matter that there is a cross and a Christmas Tree behind the candidate! I thought Huck presented a nice message to remind voters of his Christian stance.
I'm a gung-ho Romney support (my disclaimer) and I enjoyed watching Huck's political ad in the form of a Christmas message. Huck is a Christian giving a Christian message - all legal and appropriate for the season of the year.
Is this a tempest in a teapot? |
