From the stand in his ethics trial: "Throughout the years I have served as a prosecutor I have always tried to do the right thing," a tearful Nifong said. "In this case, Iwas trying to do the right thing. Much of the criticism directed to mein the is case is justified. The allegations that I'm a liar, however,are not justified." Nifong said regardless of the State Bar's decision, it would not be fair to the people in Durham County to be represented by "someone who is not held in high esteem."
Little sympathy: "It was an obvious cynical ploy to save his law license, and hisapology to these people is far too little and comes far too late," said defense lawyer Joseph Cheshire. Update: Sniffly video.

He should serve what those boys he was so savagely trying to prosecute were going to serve! He is a horrid, HORRID person and deserves no sympathy from anyone! He took a very powerful position and abused it for his own lusty political desires. He is the one that needs to be in prison! |

...via Durham in Wonderland and various news sites, I get the impression that Nifong is trying to paint the picture that he wasn't malicious or manipulative, he was merely grossly incompetent. Then he brings in character witnesses who glow about what a bright and concientious prosecutor he is.
These character witnesses are hurting him more than helping, because if he has always been so careful about the rules, what was different in this case?

My personal hope was "I'm going to step out into the hall now and shoot myself. Don't anybody try to stop me!"
But I guess we'll just have to settle for his resignation. |

bigmick, you're right as rain, but you know it ain't gonna happen. I dislike cowardly race-baiters. I started to say hate, but hate is a hateful word. I only hate two people (thus far), Jane Fonda and OJ Simpson. But there are some climbing on the list.
Regarding Nifong, if I was Papa to one of the Duke kids, I'd probably have several assault charges pending against me. Wouldn't it be fun to go clean up on some profs? |

Gabby - Rudy G did not "do the same thing" to Michael Milken. Milken is a professed con, not an innocent pawn in a race-baiting scheme, the way the Duke lax players were....
And while Nifong is a horrible lawyer, a craven poltical wanna-be, and a disgrace of a DA, calls for him to "shoot himself" or threats to beat him up are a little over-the-top crazy. I think he should be disbarred, and the Duke players should file a civil suit against him, as well as against the university for their atrocious handling of the "case." But it is not like Nifong is a terrorist. Get some perspective, people. |

If the Duke players hadn't hired a stripper to appear at a team party -- with underage drinking, and god knows what else going on?
Those poor, poor victims - especially the one I saw interviewed from his Wall Street investment banker office. These innocents have suffered enough! |

If he didn't terrorize those 3 INNOCENT boys and their families then I don't know what you'd call it! He abused them and held them up to jeers and death threats from the public and from their own school and community! ALL THE WHILE HE KNEW THEY WERE INNOCENT! I'm with rogue- throw him in jail!

but here's the worst part -- it happens all the time, but no one ever find out about it. People always bash defense attorneys, but thank goodness those boys had good defenders. Now stop and think -- do you think those boys are the only ones who were ever wrongly accused by an overzelous and unprincipled prosecutor? Are you sure that everyone who is in prison has really comitted a crime? Do you think everyone has access to the quality of defense attorneys that those boys had? What do you think happens to innocent people who don't? |

willing to throw away those boys lives for political advancement because it had worked before!.........There are no telling how many innocent "BROKE" people are serving time, as a result of Nifongs policy?........He needed BLACK VOTERS, and the BLACK PANTHERS had come to town to intimidate and influence! He should have kicked their arses out of town, but played to the emotional vote! I hope he winds up in prison with the hundreds of innocent "BROKE" people that's only crime was being broke, but you will never know their names or their stories!........Welcome to the United States Real Justice System. Crying on the stand is not going to save you, Mikey. It only makes you look much more vulnerable and pathetic to those you have wronged.
Start liquifying your assets. You're going to need LOTs of cash for the lawsuits that are going to tie you up in Court for the next fifty years.

I still wait to see if Al Sharpton and the Rev. Jessie Jackson was behind the scenes promising to deliver the black vote to Nifong?.............Inquiring minds want to know? |

Bringing up that the team had a stripper, underage drinking, etc. makes it sound like you believe they deserved to have their lives completely disrupted. Did you also believe that Clinton should have been impeached since he was behaving in an immoral manner.
I do not know if you have children, but I think you would not be so quick to judge and condemn if one of your children or someone you loved was in the position that those three were in.
I would bet that the young men are resilient and will come back from this. They will be successful in spite of what Nifong tried to do to them. |
