Replacing Bolton: The Short List Short on Spine?
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 12:50 PM

Drudge is putting George Mitchell's name out there as topping the short list.

So, I guess we're bypassing squishy Republicans and going straight to Democrats?

George Mitchell: Democratic Senate Majority Leader from 1989-1995, started his career in public service when he was appointed by Carter to U.S. Attorney of Maine in 1977, and his Wikipedia entry sports this chilling sentence:

In 1994, President Bill Clinton offered him a seat on the Supreme Court. He declined, citing his desire to focus on the health care plan that was then before the Senate.

Illustrating, of course, his sound judgment.

Ollie North noted the same name recently:

Among those deemed "acceptable" as U.N. emissaries were former Rep. Jim Leach of Iowa and former Democrat Sen. George Mitchell — both ardent supporters of the international body's globalist agenda.

Yes! Nuthin' says good things for America like "ardent support" for the "globalist agenda!"

Update: Khalilzad?

Update: Bush bids farewell to Bolton.

Khalizad
This could just be a game of musical chairs. Khalizad would be a great representative to the UN. He's served America well over the last few years.

I have an idea....
I think that the Bush Administration should be more pragmatic than just nominating George Mitchell. I agree, nominating a Democrat would send a strong signal. But it is not nearly strong enough. We need a strong voice for the US in the UN, we need Saddam Hussein. I think with a little luck and some pressure, we could get al Maliki to release Saddam to us (with our assurances that he doesn't come back to Iraq).

Think how beloved we could be by the world community. Saddam back in a place a leadership, in the UN! He could be there, wearing an Italian designer suit, and he could be the hit of the NY social scene. Plus, he could use some of his contacts in France and Russia to work to rehabilitate our image in Europe! :-P
