Inside Romney's Ames Campaign
Posted by: Patrick Ruffini at 12:55 PM
Here's a look at Mitt's very innovative and aggressive Ames straw poll outreach efforts, via the mailer his campaign is sending to Iowa Republicans. That's a nice piece of mail.

It's beautiful
What the heck are you talking about?! Yeah, wonderful flyer.

Maybe he should send it to everyone in the country, so that maybe his numbers can creep above 10%-11%!!

You've got to be kidding me. He's done. How can you spend SOOOO much and get back so little? He'll be done on Super Tuesday. Iowa and New Hampshire are not enough to get the ball rolling. Sorry.

Take it easy
Some young graphic artist is proud of this direct mail piece. Remember, he/she has a mother out there in Iowa.

I laughed when I saw the flyer, thinking it was wild and crazy. We need a little fun in this campaign. Besides, State Fairs and straw polls are great Iowa events, even for stuck-up city folks outside of Iowa. Maybe we're just jealous of their "down home" style.

Enjoy.

Ron Paul
I actually think this mailer is better than what Ron Paul is doing. Seeing how most of the signs I see for Ron Paul are marker written on cardboard tacked to a telephone pole: "Google Ron Paul, Find out the Truth." Yeah, Ron Paul is kicking butt and taking names. The Ron Paul rEVOLution. Ha ha.

JTB...
I mentioned Miró for his near-exclusive use of primary colors. I had to recalibrate my eyes after seeing the Mitt Romney/Jefferson Airplane campaign mailer.

Hamas Green?
Do his friends in Hezbollah know he is using Hamas colors?

Deep in fourth place
Romney decides to blow a million dollars trying to see if he can outpoll Ron Paul. Yep, it's that kind of political acumen that has made Romney the force- and the farce- he is today.

OH THIS IS RICH!
This picture was taken DIRECTLY from a website supporting Ron Paul!

http://ronpaulpledge.com/wordpress/?p=21

Why? Because Ron Paul and his peeps want to freeload off Romney. HAHA
Mitt Romney plans to bribe Iowans to vote for him in the key Ames Straw Poll (flier below). He’ll pay all the expenses for an Iowan, feed them and transport them to and from the event in in an effort to buy
their vote.

Some say if Mitt is willing to bus Iowan’s to Ames for the Straw Poll…they should take him up on his offer!

Some say Mitt Romney could pay for your $35 straw poll fee, transport you to and from the event, and buy you ‘Iowa’s Best B-B-Q.’

Some say that then, after carefully weighing their options…..they may decide to vote Ron Paul at the Ames Straw Poll!

If interested, you could call Mitt for the free package at 866.505.2008 (details on flier below).

Art should inspire us to better ourselves. There is certainly a difference between ad-copy and art although there is an art (as they say) to making ads that work. Then again, some people who find cartoons of a certain caravan-raiding pedophile offensive find nothing wrong with desecrating symbols of other peoples' religions...

Go figure...

I am like the rest of you "philistines". I know what I like... ;-)

As detailed
in the book, A Mormon in the White House, this is the best straw poll flyer in history and points to the amazing brains, organizational skills and political savvy of the Romney campaign.
Thaale writes: Thursday, August, 02, 2007 1:58 PM
Reprinting an ad?
As election mailers go, it’s…completely unremarkable.

But since you insist we pick it apart:

• “The largest political event in America”? Okay, I can think of a few others that are a bit larger.

• A 28-year tradition? Even by new world standards, that’s not much of a tradition.

• Two media quotes emphasizing the importance of the straw poll, both from 1999? How about anything from this millennium, from the Internet era?

Does it come...
.. with a motion sickness bag?

colorful
I would word it differently than Inkling but this is a very busy direct mailer. It is attention grabbing and not likely to get lost among the junk mail.

Romney has been pretty effective at direct mail. It has lots of corn colors mixed with patriotic. It also has a state fair flair to it. You get the date but it does hurt your eyes until you focus on the pictures in each letter.

On balance it suspect it will cut thru the clutter and is very effective but a bit unorthodox.

Romney is up another point in the RAS tracking poll. Rudy 24, Thompson 23, Romney 15, McCain 11. I would really like to see Romney get within the margin of error on Thompson and Rudy. That may take a while but up 3 points from 2 days ago is very good, especially with Thompson down 4 from his peak this month and Rudy down 1.
inkling writes: Thursday, August, 02, 2007 1:08 PM
I normally agree with you, however...
With 15 years of print graphic design experience, I have to say that is one of the most painful, retina-piercing, nausea-inducing, gawd-awful mailers I have ever seen. I get motion-sick just glancing at it (there's no way I'll read it).

I will give minor props to Mitt for eschewing the "red & reflex blue ink" and "stars & wavy stripes" motif of 99.86% of campaign collateral. But, dudes... Ames ain't the Haight-Ashbury.

(I think I better look at some Joan Miró to re-align my rods and cones.)

I disagree!
He should have made a YouTube! That's probably the best way to communicate with perspective Ames attendees.
