Is Wicker the Trippi of '08?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 1:52 PM
A couple weeks ago, I noticed that one thing missing from the political reporting this cycle was the emergence (and promotion) of a celebrity consultant.

According to the Wall Street Journal, this year's "celebrity consultant" might just be Huckabee ad man, Bob Wicker:

Every presidential election makes stars out of a few political consultants. In 2004, Joe Trippi won a reputation for harnessing the Internet to help his candidate, Democrat Howard Dean. In 2000, Karl Rove's reputation as a political master was sealed with the election of George W. Bush. Should Mr. Huckabee continue his climb, Mr. Wickers and his team would earn similar reviews.

Mr. Wicker
So now we know who Huckabee's accomplice is in the religion-bating ads. I doubt this will end up being a career enhancement.

oops- meant religion-baiting
Seriously, what ethical person would run on a strategy of dividing social conservatives and maligning an entire group of decent and patriotic Americans? None, but Huck, and it speaks volumes about him and Mr. Wicker.

Shameful and pathetic.

Christmas Ad
The Christmas Ad will be a classic but for the wrong reasons.

It positioned Huckabee in a straight jacket that prevents him from gaining more than hard core evangelical support. It was a brilliant ad in that it got a lot of press but it's positioning was an act of desperation. It was an tactical ad that worked for a week but may have killed the Huck campaign in the long run.

Further, technically Huck blinked his eyes all the way thru it. It was well done except for the candidate. Huck is not ready for prime time. However, his ad will be remembered.

real genius

Matt Lewis loves the religion baiting, but he won't nut up and admit so.
The same way he won't nut up and admit he's been a John McCain supporter.

Yeah, Wicker is a real 'genius.'
"Hey, we could light that bookshelf to take the form of a crucifix all the while our good Pastor Huckabee is talking about Jesus---woo hoo !"

That stuff might work in homogenous states such as Iowa or South Carolina, but it would get Huckabee crushed in a general election...and then people would be labeling Wicker a moron.

Wicker Man
Unfortunately, Wicker's latest ad's "unveiling" (aborted today) is going to be remembered as Huckabee's Howard Dean moment . . .

The ad that almost was . . .

Huckabee was for the ad before he was against it.

Huck Loses in Vegas
Huckabee has broken down thru the crucial 10 % resistance level in the National Vegas odds. This is a very bad omen for Huckabee. Huck is at 8 about a point ahead of Ron Paul.

Todays events
Given today's events with the whole negative ad press conference fiasco, I would say that being part of the Huckabee campaign may hurt Wicker's resume rather than help it.
