Blog, Blog, Blog the Pork, Blog the Pork Away
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 11:26 PM

I wrote over at Michelle Malkin's, where she's been kind enough to let me guest-blog, about the next front in the war on pork:

Wouldn't it be cool if someone took the time to enter each earmark into an electronic database, which would then be made available to the taxpaying and blogging public to comb through if they were so inclined? You know, given that it's their money being spent and all.

And, wouldn't it be double-cool if the taxpaying and blogging public were so inclined, and began identifying which pork project belongs to whom and ever-so-politely inquiring of their duly elected representatives just what the heck they were thinking funding the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service?

Here's how you can play:

Check out the earmarks for your state and then call your congressman and ask if he or she sponsored any of your state's earmarks. If the answer is yes, ask why the congressman's name isn't on the earmark. If you recognize the institution designated to receive the earmarked tax dollars, call them and ask them what they intend to do with your money.

Then email us at info@examiner.com with the subject line "Earmarks" and tell us what you found out. The Examiner will be asking more questions about who got the earmarks and why, so your information could be very important. You will be part of an army of citizen journalists determined to shine some much-needed light on spending decisions made behind closed doors by powerful Members of Congress.

No longer...
do Americans have to sit idly by while their hard-earned money is basically thrown in the crapper by not-so-well-meaning politicians. The internet has put the power into our hands to become aware and to make a stand. Please, folks, let's get involved and let our voices on common sense spending be heard. It has never been easier.

Brilliant
Brilliant is the first word that comes to mind after reading this.
Stomping out earmarks with blogpower, excellent.

Review it again
I looked at the list of projects and many were hospitals or medical related projects. In California we are really hurting in this field because of all the unpaid medical bills left by illegal aliens. I agree with your intent, but I'm not finding anything really looking like pork in the normal sense. Got any ideas?

Earmarks
The solution to the Earmark problem is really simple. COngress will never stop bringing home hte bacon, no matter how many letter that we write. This problem has to be solved systematically.

1. Allocate a funding level for each congressman, probably according to population.
2. Allow each congressman to dispense funds within his/her state/district.

The fight is now between the congressman and the local demands. THe folks in Texas do not have to worry about whether or not someone builds a bridge in Alaska. THat is a local issue.

Shouting at elected officials and telling them not to spend money is senseless. If they lose the next election, the replacement will continue to act "in the best interest of his/her constituents."

I say, let them. Just give them a budget.

Dear god
Did you just open a post about government spending by paraphrasing Peaches?

I'm speechless.

So this is what it feels like to be in love.

The real cost of pork
Katherine,

The Washinton Times has a great story today about all the pork crowding out treatment for our returning wounded.

The real cost of pork
Katherine,

Many times people don't see how Pork harms anyone, except for the "rich" who pay taxes. Well, the Washington Times has a great story of how pork has crowded out an essential treatment center for our returning wounded.
