Can Romney's Organization Win NH?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 12:10 AM
I attended events for Rudy, Romney, McCain, and Huckabee today.  The Romney event was held at his headquarters, which gave me some interesting insight.  There were literally about a thousand pizza boxes piled up.  Mitt might be a millionaire, but his headquarters is a bit spartan, to say the least.

Nevertheless, volunteers from all over the country were there, dutifully calling Granite Staters and urging them to vote tomorrow.  It was clear that his supporters truly love and admire him.

I also got to overhear some campaign volunteers talk about their day going door-to-door for Romney.  Apparently, they both accidentally ventured into Massachusetts.  Not good.

But they also both agreed that they had spent the entire day campaigning without so much as seeing a single McCain flier or pamphlet.  Romney has hundreds of volunteers making calls and going door-to-door, McCain probably has a skeleton operation.

Organization wasn't enough to win Iowa for Romney, but then again, he was competing against an organized Evangelical movement.  Will organization be the difference-maker in New Hampshire?

Update:  I've spoken to some folks, and it was inaccurate to describe McCain's operation up here as a "skeleton" operation.  In fact, there are hundreds of volunteers working for him.  Still, there is no doubt that Romeny's strength is his organization, while McCain's strength is his maverick image -- as well as the many Independent voters who may cast their ballots for him today.  The Independents are his version of Huckabee's Evangelicals...

Pastor Lewis, it's good to get you on record admitting that there was a big theological appeal
for evangelicals in Huckabee.
Of course, part of that appeal is that 'the other guy' doesn't share their theology, right ?

When will evangelicals realize we're electing a Commander in Chief, rather than a Pastor in Chief ?

Hector-- $, media, Romney, Huckabee
[Hector Berlioz on January 8, 2008 12:46 AM]"Romney has struggled and fought hard for his position in the race."

And along the way has expended a lot of his treasure.

This Romney PAC and its affiliates doled out $1.3, 1.4 million:

Huckabee lacks much money for advertising, and has opted to make himself readily available to the media for interviews.
Does Romney do that?

No doubt old data, but what kind of poll numbers has Romney gotten in exchange for having spent $54 million?

Huckabee spent $1.7 million-- that's right, 1 point 7 million.

McCain spent $29 million.

Mitt Romney’s saturation attack ads (played every few minutes in Iowa and now in New Hampshire) have not only poisoned the campaign with mischaracterizations of the records of his opponents, but also set the agenda for horribly unenlightening and awkward debates that harmed all the candidates, very much including Romney himself.

characterized by our habits.

We see the world and the world reflects who we are. Furthermore, how we judge or condemn others, is just a reflection of our own nature.

Mitt Romney's success now becomes his downfall, because most assume that, you cannot be rich if you do not cheat, because they think the majority do cheat.

A drinker expects all his or her friends to drink, or they cannot trust them, while in fact in that state you will agree, they are even less trustworthy. Some paradox.

Therefore, "The ugliness we see in others is only a reflection of our own nature."

So the writers that bash a persons character and integrity, really are exposing their own weakness and folly. Such attacks are generally not anything objective that could be proven one way or other, and that is why this can cheat us out of our best choice, but, most people fall for it anyway, because of fear. Fear means you lost, because you did not know enough, not to doubt.

Pointing out the failure of candidates on the issues, or their successful, achievements, and objective accomplishments, in public and private life is self-evident and can be verified.
Personal attacks cannot, and should send out a strong warning, of the weakness in that accuser.

When we realize this, we will criticize less, as well as to realize that the ugliness we see in an other is the very ugliness we need to recognize and overcome.

Take a better look at Mitt Romney. You will not, if anytime at all, find him lowering himself to name calling, or bashing any opponents character. He points out the weakness and erroneous position on the issues. You will see him in a new light, and that truth with steer you to your best choice. Good Luck!

...to see what happens tomorrow. Whatever the case several things will be revealed. For example, how much sway does the Barack have on the independent vote? Will McCain be able to go on even if he does win? How bad will a loss hurt Romney since in second he will still be leading in delegates?

I am looking for a Romney upset to tell me that all hope for the future of the GOP isn't totally lost.

Evangelical Organization
Lewis' last point bears repeating--mostly because the MSM has ignored it. Huckabee built-in organization of Evangelical congregations was far more established and organic than Romney's. Huck's had been in place for decades--Romney's, about a year.

I know of one person who made a 100 calls to Independents today. He reported that about 50% of the calls were pro Romney. Only about 15 % were pro McCain. The rest did not want to be bothered.

Why Mitt will probably not recover
And that's what cost Romney his brand. He spent more time trying to prove he was a status-quo Republican instead of proving he was a competent innovator.

Now, he's trying to go back and prove that he's the closest thing to a change agent the GOP has right now. The sad thing for Romney is that, arguably, that was true 11 months ago. But now, after all the re-branding campaigns to prove that he was a conservative, a Reagan-Bush Republican, Romney's lost the credibility to argue that he can be a change agent.

Firsthand
Ernst_p, perhaps Lewis doesn't have the time to walk NH neighborhoods looking for McCain literature that isn't there. I've been in these neighborhoods and seen plenty of literature and volunteers for Obama, Clinton, Edwards, Paul, and Romney. McCain's street presence is limited to signs and sporadic picketers. Lewis' post is credible when you also consider campaigns' funds. On the GOP side, Romney and Paul probably have the most to spend. It follows that they'd have more organization, especially Romney.

All these campaign's volunteers have been very nice to one another. I've heard that Obama has over 700 volunteers in Manchester alone. That's scarrily large. Again, this is partly a factor of funding. I'm sure Clinton's $100M+ also affords an impressive organization; I've seen plenty of her people canvasing. But it's also a result of his popularity. Whoever the GOP nominates, they've got their work cut out for them.
Hector Berlioz writes: Tuesday, January, 08, 2008 12:46 AM
How about...
How about we chunk the "Romney is all organization" cliche out the window. Obviously Romney has struggled and fought hard for his position in the race. Unlike Huckabee, he didn't have the MSM swooning and positively promoting him.

it took money, it took organization, but no candidate would be where Romney is if that's all it was.
Ernst_p writes: Tuesday, January, 08, 2008 12:24 AM
Maybe that was because the McCain people
were smart enough to stay in the state having the primary tomorrow?

Seriously, "reports" like this make me angry. Why report on what people in the Romney camp are saying about the McCain ground team instead of investigating for yourself? It's much more reliable, I think.
