Why Jesse Helm's is the Country's Favorite Conservative Senator

More than a decade ago, Morton Blackwell wrote a tribute to Sen. Helms. Below is an excerpt. Read the whole thing here.
Why has Sen. Jesse Helms for so long been our country's very favorite conservative senator? Why do we love him? Let me count the reasons: - In every word and deed, Sen. Helms embodies solid conservative principles. No one else in the Senate, no one at all, comes even close to his reputation for selfless, steadfast adherence to every tenet of our conservative philosophy. Name the issue, and I can tell you how he will vote. Name the issue. Free enterprise. Limited government. Strong national defense. Traditional values. Name the issue. Jesse Helms is predictable.
That is why we admire and love him. And that is why he's the conservative liberals love to hate. - Sen. Helms forces votes on issues the liberals don't want to vote on. Time and again, year in and year out, Sen. Helms has been the only conservative prepared to make the Senate vote on conservative issues where most politicians are on the opposite side from the American people. Think about all the liberal senators who have been defeated by more conservative challengers since 1972. It's a fact. Jesse Helms made every one of those liberals vulnerable. He gave them all voting records their challengers could run against. Jesse Helms makes democracy work.
That is why we admire and love him. And that is why he's the conservative liberals love to hate.

Which pretty much sums up the conservative party.
Hate.

Maybe I am uninformed, but the first thought that always comes to mind when I hear his name is that he was a racist. To me, that pretty much tarnishes his good works.
Was he, or was he not racist? And did he change over the years and renounce it? I honestly don't know. |

...to the family of this vile, despicable, racist, bigot, homophobe. Helms represented the very worst that this country can produce. I am delighted that he is dead and can no longer spew forth his hatred and venom.

In praising and admiring this "great" conservative leader, i am puzzled about the sense of balance and justice that you conservatives seem to lack. |

3. Sen. Helms was a virulent, committed racist. He held and nursed hatred for his fellow man in his heart. "White people, wake up before it is too late. Do you want Negroes working beside you, your wife and your daughters, in your mills and factories?"
That is why we conservatives admire and love him.
4. Sen. Helms was a fanatic homophobe. He believed strongly that gays should be treated as lesser human beings, hounded and attacked. He called homosexuals "weak, morally sick wretches." During debate on a 1988 AIDS bill, Helms said, "There is not one single case of AIDS in this country that cannot be traced in origin to sodomy."
That is why we conservatives admire and love him.
5. Sen. Helms cheated, lied, and stole to get himself reelected. He was cited and fined on numerous occasions for various kinds of illegal fundrasing and election fraud. He showed that you can suceed within the system without bothering to obey its laws.
That is why we conservatives admire and love him.
6. Sen. Helms was a scummy slumlord. He showed that it's possible to make good money within our capitalist system by providing people with filthy, rat-infested places to live.
That is why we conservatives admire and love him.
In short, he personified the basic principles of the Republican Party and the Conservative Movement.
And that's why most of the nation celebrated his death with fireworks, parades, and picnics.

Apparently the concept of irony has no place in your mind. Well goatboy, when the day comes and you are no longer alive, I doubt anybody will even notice, much less be glad that you are no longer spewing your pathetic hatred. The only thing that will mark your passing is a better smell in whatever fetid little corner of this country that you currently occupy. Stay classy jerk. |
