Bloggers and the Conservative Movement
Posted by: Patrick Ruffini at 9:57 PM

The top three in the CPAC straw poll: Romney, Giuliani, Gingrich. On the important "combo" question it was Giuliani, Romney, Gingrich.

Here's the Pajamas Media straw poll for the last week: Giuliani, Gingrich, Romney. And the latest GOP Bloggers poll: the same.

Each of these polls has the same top three.

I don't know if this will predict where the broader GOP primary electorate goes, but it's a good commentary on how thoroughly integrated the blogosphere has become in the conservative movement. Conservative blog readers aren't their own standalone constituency; they're a proxy for the movement. The lineup in the blogosphere probably isn't too far off from the organic votes cast at CPAC.

It's no surprise then that CPAC made room on its program this year for a Blogger of the Year award, won by N.Z. Bear who stands at the nexus of commentary and actually getting it done.

McCain Love?
What those polls reflect is how much McCain has pissed off the base.

Why wouldn't the polls have the other three candidates? I would be surprised if one of the dark horses were included.

At four parts
There is no ONE Conservative Movement. I count at least four branches: the Market Evangelists (e.g. Larry Kudlow), the Democracy Evangelists (e.g. GW Bush), the Evangelist Evangelists (e.g. Dr. James Dobson), and the Anti-Evangelist Evangelists (e.g. William F. Buckley Jr.) with a lot of overlap. I count myself principally a Democracy Evangelist. If this was 45 years ago, I might be a JFK fan. That's back when the Democrats actually believed in Democracy. Before they figured out they only needed liberal Supreme Court justices, and nothing else.

Drudge
Forgive me for talking off-topic, but I was just listening to Drudge on the radio. Was anyone as shocked as I was by the way Hillary addressed that crowd today. OMG

That was the tackiest rant I've ever heard, just about.

reynoldssu,

Just wait till she "like totally gets to like Encino, CA" to speak. What will she sound like then?

Frog gets irony...
" If this was 45 years ago, I might be a JFK fan. That's back when the Democrats actually believed in Democracy."

and Joe Kennedy rolls over laughing in hell...

richard mcenroe,

Presidential candidates don't lose the close elections--they give them away. That was Nixon's attitude back then. It's not like Nixon didn't know that would happen.

Frog
Well I don't know...all the Hollywood people live in Encino. I thought all the ones she doesn't have an FBI file on are going for Obama. There may not be anyone there to listen to her. :-)

...but seriously, that was really weeeeeeeeeird.I'm beginning to think we need to add "nut" to all the other things we think she is. I heard the impeachment lawyer jumped ship on her...I guess he made her fork over HIS FBI file before he agreed to get her husband off the hook, because apparently she has nothing to straight-jacket his loyalty to her.

I'm beginning to think Richardson is going to end up their nominee. Too many things don't line up.

Joe's partly right
But I have to correct him somewhat: McCain has pissed off a handful of cranks. He hasn't pissed off "the base" or any meaningful portion of it, as his continued general popularity illustrates.

The CPAC poll had 1700 respondents, mostly paid for by various campaigns (but not McCain's) and highly unrepresentative. The Pajamas poll had 1363 self-selecting respondents. (Worth noting: Pajamas claims its poll has "Over 200 blogs and websites have already registered as precincts." So each site is recording about one vote per day.) Neither is work the proverbial warm bucket of spit.

why
Will someone please tell me why it's perfectly alright for Obama and Hillary to campaign in a church but it is taboo for Republicans? Will this be completely forgotten when Republicans even dare to mention GOD?

The blogs didn't help in 2006
The neocon blogs didn't help much in 2006 did they ?

The way things are going here, ie, promoting censorhsip of conservative Ann Coulter, I'd be surprised if conservatives even read the blogs by 2008.

Atticus,
I think the blogs were a big help. There is a massive amount of information available that has never been this available before. I think the people dumped a lot of GOP candidates to send a message that conservatives were no longer conservatives and they were tired of it.

blogs sure predicted the success of the Lieberman Senate campaign, eh?
