The Global Warming Divide Between Romney And McCain
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 8:31 PM
The long exchange between McCain and Romney on global warming is a crucial moment in this debate and campaign:  McCain-Lieberman is a massive regulatory program which would greatly burden the American economy.  It would tax energy in a regressive and lasting way, and as Romney points out, would drive huge numbers of jobs off-shore without measurably reducing greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale.

Conservatives:  "Cap and trade" would be the greatest expansion of the federal regulatory authority in the past half-century.  John McCain's certainty about the causes of global warming and the solutions put him far outside the mainstream of the GOP.

UPDATE: Bravo to Janet Hook for pointing out that when John McCain opposed the Bush tax cuts, he used class warfare rhetoric to explain his votes.

UPDATE:  "No amnesty."  "No special pathway."  Second mention of the Z Visa. Mitt Romney draws a big line between himself and McCain.  Are conservatives watching?

McCain: "We are all in agreement on what we want to do."  That's just not true.  The more the debate stays on immigration, the worse it is for McCain, period.

The WSJ against Mitt Romney
Washington's problem isn't a lack of data, or a failure to calibrate the incentives as in the business world. Congress and the multiple layers of government respond exactly as you'd expect given the incentives for self-preservation and turf protection that always exist in political institutions. The only way to overcome them is with leadership on behalf of good ideas backed by public support. The fact that someone as bright as Mr. Romney doesn't recognize this Beltway reality risks a Presidency that would get rolled quicker than you can say Jimmy Carter.

All the more so because we haven't been able to discern from his campaign, or his record in Massachusetts, what his core political principles are. Mr. Romney spent his life as a moderate Republican, and he governed the Bay State that way after his election in 2002. While running this year, however, he has reinvented himself as a conservative from radio talk show-casting, especially on immigration.

The problem is not that Mr. Romney is willing to reconsider his former thinking. Nor is it so much that his apparent convictions always seem in sync with the audience to which he is speaking at the moment. (Think $20 billion in corporate welfare for Michigan auto makers.) Plenty of politicians attune their positions to new constituencies. The larger danger is that Mr. Romney's conversions are not motivated by expediency or mere pandering but may represent his real governing philosophy.

McCain (D) vs Hillary (D)
Please do NOT stay home. You must vote. You do not have to vote for Hillybama or McAmnesty. There are always other parties and people on the ballot. You could write in Joe Oliva. The important votes are for House and Senate seats. Conservatives MUST win seats in the House. The House is where things get done. It was the passage of H.R. 4437, an enforcement bill, in Dec.05 that sparked the illegal alien protest marches and moved this issue to the front burner. It was the Senate that tried to jam amnesty down our throats. The D's that won seats in '06 were conservatives running on enforcement platforms. One of them, Heath Shuler D-NC, introduced the SAVE Act. Call, e-mail, or write your Congressman and urge support of this legislation. Enforcement is what Americans want, not amnesty.

I don't think Hillary is stupid enough to step in front of this bus. McCain is.

McCain is a true Conservative. I don't think his last name is Kennedy, Feingold or Lieberman. Further, I think his behavior is balanced, mature, adult and admirable. He's never nasty, brutish & short.(Thanks to T.Hobbes.) Johnny's overall TEMPERAMENT is to be envied by all who are not Mittbots & Romniacs. Little Man John is for yummy Open Borders, unilateral Global Warming Insanity, American Ambu-Chasers furnished to Islamist Butchers, and Closing Gitmo. John hates--yeas, I said HATES--Mitt Romney nearly as much as he hates bin Laden. He hates Mitt's self-made wealth(BAaaaadD!), huge successes in the Executive/Private Sector, and his nice family and hair. Hey, did I mention that Johnny's a nice little guy?? Romney boring and a liar
Unfortunately for Romney -- and for political conservatives -- politics is about more than policy prescriptions. It's about cultivating a winning image, creating a style that appeals to Americans. And Romney doesn't even have enough appeal for the hard-core conservatives who vote in presidential primaries. Despite McCain's long list of liberal bona fides, he won 27 percent of self-described conservatives in the Florida primary, as compared with Romney's 37 percent.

What's McCain's appeal? His style. If Romney has the policies conservatives want, McCain has the image conservatives want. Though Romney is a Washington outsider, he looks like a Washington insider. And though McCain is a Washington insider, he has played his outsider, "maverick" image to the hilt. Though Romney has been more consistent on policy than McCain, it is McCain's "Straight Talk Express" that draws support, not Romney's private sector experience.

Conservatives are understandably upset with the prospect of a McCain candidacy. But they should recognize that if Romney's stylistic drawbacks are severe enough to sink him in an election where most of the constituents agree with him on policy, his personal shortcomings will cripple him in a general election.

http://www.townhall.com/columnists/BenShapiro/2008/01/31/mc cain_won_because_romneys_boring

It is more than just boring style. Mitt has had no qualms throwing out complete untruths about his opponents. Maybe it is not Mitt personally, but his staff, but his campaign does it all the time. He puts out false accusations about his opponents. When he is caught on it, he get's a bit pouty and looks hurt. In addition, he has changed positions on things so cavalierly that it is hard to take him seriously. That is why he is so unpopular with the GOP (seriously, he is getting beaten badly by a guy conservatives can't stand) and has close to zero chance to win the general election.

Morbidly Fascinated With The McCaniac
pomposity on the post-debate thread here. Enjoy, Amigos. Joe: Eddie Haskell, my A**! Ward Cleaver's Boss, maybe. You gotta problem with that?

Was it Jorge who suggested J.C.Watts as Veep for Juan? No such horror had occurred to me, but thinking of the comedy which that would soon be brings a grin to my post Florida Primary scowly face. One--most critically in time of WAR--must closely consider who the nominee has picked for VP-running mate. The biggest consideration being: Can he or she be a strong, able, effective President if something awful & unexpected happened to the Prez. Uummm...Watts?? Right, Jorge, mang...FOCUS...No. Nada. Nyet. Nein. Now, how about Howard's suggestions...Thompson...Good. Condi...Great...Nope to the others, including Crist. Oh, and which one of our gloating geniuses suggested Huckster for Juan's Veep? S'cuse, please, while I BWaaaaaaaaaahH...If it were either that pseudo-populist grifter or J.C., folks like me wouldn't punch that chad. How you guys figuring on Juan winning...? Why not Rudy? Seems to me he'd be awesome for it.

IF, Lady MacClinton picks Obama as running mate, and IF Obama can swallow his nausea and the thought of being forced off the stage by Billy-Bubba, they may not be beatable by McJuan & anybody.(*Barring, as I keep saying, unforseen al Qaeda &/or Iranian type crises which might give Americans a wake-up-to-REALITY call and give McCain an advantage. Or, successful Madame sabotage by sick-a** spouse who can't allow her having it.*) I have a very hard time imagining the Clintons risking their narcissistic spotlight with a heat seeking young magnet like Obama--UNLESS, they believed they couldn't win otherwise. I also can't feature Obama taking the spot, if offered, and risking being minimalized and swimming with the Sleaze.(*AND, risking his Future.*)

Who would stand by my side

And now you've given me, given me
Nothing but shattered dreams, shattered dreams
Feel like I could run away, run away
From this empty heart

You said you'd die for me

Woke up to reality
And found the future not so bright
I dreamt the impossible
That maybe things could work out right
I thought it was you
Who would do me no wrong

I feel probably very similar to how you will feel when McCain goes down.... The Irony will be that it will be his own party that takes him down in the General..... whereas Gore was taken down by the opposing party.... I'm predicting a blow out, and i for onw will silently click my heels in my mind with each crushing state total that comes in...

Your guy is not very honorable and not very straight talking for someone who claims to be.... In fact, he's a snake like you and many of your cohorts.....

Weasel Joe?? You called Romney a weasel?
While you are probably an expert on that topic the only weaseling going on here is with McCain.... The so called "honorable candidate" what a joke....

Rmney criticized on issues... he talked about positions that McCain actually took.... he didn't lie, and make up stuff like your candidate....

McCain is acting exactly like the Clintons... He makes an accusation, forces the accused to defend themselves on the absurdity of the charge and by the time that Romney gets done with the accusation, McCain has made up another rediculous charge.... The only reason McCain does this is so that he doesn't have to deal with any other issues besides his only trick... The Surge....

McCain really needs to learn about the Economy and get more in touch with main stream GOP on Domestic Policy Issues.... Then, he won't have to play that game in order to avoid dealing intellectually with topic outside of Defense....

The Ironic Part
Is, even though Huckabee is running interference for McCain because of a mutual dislike for Romney... he will end up without the VP spot on the ticket that he has been hoping for..... In fact, i suspect that the best he will get is a promise of some lowly cabinet position....

In the meantime, the Evangelicals will get a candidate that would not be very friendly to the group that he has refered to in the past as the "agents of intolerance".....

Forgive them, for they know not what they do...

By any objective measure, Romney killed McCain in this debate.... AGAIN.... But that doesn't seem to matter..... The Conservatives are divided and because Huckabee voters either got their feelings hurt in Iowa or because they are making decisions based on what they believe is a religious conflict McCain looks to probably get the Nomination.... But with it comes contempt on the part of Conservatives....

You and your brude were mud wrestlers ... you, like your candidate, are cheap shot artists, and I am guessing that for many of us. you and your candidate, will never get our support.... The General will prove to be one of the most embarrassing Republican losses in History.... similar to what another Arizona Republican suffered some 44 years ago...

Romney's Swan Song
Romney wasn't happy about the criticism McCain leveled at him about timetables in Iraq. He said it was a dirty trick because it came days before Florida. Well, maybe so, but it should also serve as a comfort to nervous Republicans about McCain's ability to play hardball in the general. McCain may seem like a guy who likes to reach across the aisle but he's not afraid to get dirty. McCain will be a very clever general election candidate; it won't all be kumbaya with Clinton or Obama.

Romney's pushback, btw, that if this was an issue, then why didn't he raise it earlier, wasn't a great debate comeback moment. As I've noted before, Romney just doesn't come across well when he's angry.

Overall, Romney seemed simply ticked off. It was as if he realized the end was near and he didn't know how to stop it. He tried to go after McCain, politely mind you, but didn't trip the newly crowned frontrunner up.

Victor Davis Hanson speaks
Despite McCain's 82 percent ranking by the American Conservative Union, and his support for balanced budgets, an end to pork-barrel spending and earmarks, strong support for the war, and expressed regret over once supporting the Bush illegal immigration reform package, McCain was branded by the conservative media as a sellout and a near liberal. Not to mention, he was supposedly too old and hot-tempered to be the Republican nominee. The more McCain was discovered not to be a perfect conservative, the more he was accused of not even being a good one.

Even stranger, the various Republican candidates began invoking Ronald Reagan's three-decade-old tenure as the new litmus test of the times — apparently to show how moderates like the wayward McCain fell far short of the Gipper's true-blue conservatism.

Were conservatives supposed to forget that a maverick Reagan raised some taxes, signed an illegal alien amnesty bill, expanded government, appointed centrist Supreme Court justices, advocated nuclear disarmament, sold arms to Iran and pulled out of Lebanon — but to remember only that John McCain was not for the original Bush tax cuts or once supported the administration’s offer of a quasi-amnesty?

Mitt's Response.. (at least imo)
"What I saw and heard last night was alarming. Sen McCain, (obligatory 'an honorable war hero') cannot admit when he has lied and made a mistake. He knew, as does everyone else, that he has intentionally mistated my position in the final moments before a primary caucus for political gain. But even when confronted with the actual quote itself and while sitting right next to me he was incapable of hearing or seeing the truth of it. Voters in these upcoming primary states should be very concerned about this. If Sen. McCain cannot hear argument and recognize and admit when he has made a mistake like this, do the American public believe he will hear them on the problems facing our nation? Will he hear them when they don't want illegal immigration, or higher taxes, (etc)? Who will he be listening to when he tries to address the huge economic issues facing our nation, will he give them same deaf ear to the truth and desires of the american people that he gave me last night? Will he make the same false allegations against a democratic candidate and what will that mean for our party?..."

If you follow CNN's Bill Schneider Mitt won the debate as did CNN's own tracking. Follow the blogs from analysts and Mitt won the debate. You come here and McCain supporters continue to act as if the rest of the country do not this old wind bag with a temper and completely clueless on the economy. Plus Mitt did a good job slapping McCain on Illegal Immigration another point the Liberal McCain tries to hide. All he ever does is try to say "I supported the surge" It is pathetic. His CAFE standards are a disaster, he against tax cuts, he is against free speech and just look at the rage in him whenever someone questions HIS RECORD. It is amazing...he just thinks he can SMILE HIS RECORD AWAY. He is against ANWR which is a joke and his ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION STANCE IS A COUNTRY DESTROYER. And we do not need to bus the illegals home. YOU CUT OFF THEIR BENEFITS AND END CHAIN MIGRATION AND THEY WILL LEAVE ON THEIR OWN!!! THEY ARE ENTITLED TO NOTHING ANYWAY.

Mitt's too little, too late
Romney didn't do enough to change the fundamental dynamic of this race. He scrapped with McCain over the timetables question, but any time Romney spends talking about Iraq is bound to end up a draw at best. No one is under the impression that he now wants out of Iraq, but his statements from late 2006 and early 2007 do not evince strong leadership. And on the merits, I'm not convinced he won the argument. McCain responded that "timetables" was liberal code for retreat, and that Romney should have just said no. It was effective enough.

McCain improved as the evening wore on, and as the conversation shifted to national security...

McCain also got in a great dig in at Romney when he said that he'd led the largest squadron in the Navy and had "done it for patriotism and not for profit." Just seconds later he mentioned his time as a POW--a debate first, I think. John Podhoretz captures the result:

I know it is supposedly a great calling card that Romney ran the Salt Lake City Olympics, but saying it directly after John McCain talked about his time in the Hanoi Hilton might not be the best timing in the world.

In the end, Romney couldn't land the knock out punch. And he didn't say anything that will make it on to the local news tomorrow night. (One wonders just how many Republicans were really watching this affair? Anderson Cooper was insufferable, and Republicans don't like CNN to begin with. Many may have tuned out early.)

So the news tomorrow will be dominated not by debate coverage but by McCain's endorsements, from Rudy and Arnold, by the end of the Edwards campaign, and by the looming battle between Obama and Hillary. Romney missed his chance, and it's not clear that he'll get another

Mitt "Eddie Haskell" Romney
Mitt's worst moment was not called out in the debate but it is coming. Mitt said that entitlements are the biggest issue facing us (fiscally) right now and we need to reduce them. Correctomundo!

But Mitt attacked John McCain in Florida two days ago for voting against expanding Medicare entitlements. Why? Mitt wanted to hurt McCain with retires (which Florida has a lot of).

It is a classic Romney move. Mitt is so upset that someone would misquote (as he claims McCain is doing to him on Iraq)--then he does it flat out in the debate right back.

It is too bad Mitt has these character flaws about stuff like this, because the sad part is he is talented guy. The truth is while Mitt did not flat out call for withdrawal, Mitt Romney was a weasel on Iraq. Mitt has been a weasel on a lot of issues. We can go on and on.

McCain Means Liberalism and Amnesty
Wow, McCain is not presidential. He's racking up actors and NY Times endorsements, but his only credentials are talking about 30 years ago when he was first elected. Then came his affair, Keating 5, voting against tax cuts, supporting research on embryonic stem cells and writing the AMNESTY bill. He has fought for liberal Democrats on most of the important issues.

He is not even close to presidential. He's not a smart man, and as a conservative Republican myself, I am ashamed McCain is being considered. This man is beloved by liberals for good reason.

Does McCain have his own opinion?
Several time during tonight's debate, Johnny Mac said that his immigration bill was off the table!

My question is why did it take a strong public stand against his proposed bill for him to realize that border security is the major issue for many Americans? Can't he think for himself? Does he need polls and public opinion to guide his decisions? If his proposed bill is now deemed to be "bad" why did he submit it?

Sometimes we stumble and sometimes we're just flat wrong. Johnny Mac can't seem to bring himself to say that his bill was just flat wrong. He doesn't have the fortitude to admit being wrong, he's now afraid of losing rather than being concerned about needing to win honorably!

Romney now needs to address that aspect of McCain and also be more positive himself about his positions. Romney will make a great president.

McCain does need a good rest.
Earlier this year he referred to Putin as the President of Germany.

Tonight, he said back in the year of April.

Any person, let alone a 70-year old, would be exhausted by this point in a campaign. He should take 3-days off and rest up somewhere.

He has to be sick at the fact that he still has to do this for another 9-months!

Huckabee did seem energetic and on his game--again. He puts you at ease...kind of like Reagan did. Does anyone else notice that? Quite a contrast with the others on the stage tonight.

We all know that it's over but now we know, Mitt knows it's over.

Oh hey WOW! There is a big suprise. Arnold does not care a lick about California. I know because I live here.
Arnold is no differant then Gray Davis was.

What Arnold cares about is Mexico and how to merg Mexico and California into one happy utopia.

Like McCain, Boarder Agents will tell you Arnold could care less about the boarders.

Arnold only objective is to help Ted Kennedy (Unkle Teddy) get Obama in the Whitehouse and McCain is the best avenue to do so.

Obama will mop the floor with this tired old man.

Of course, Mitt schooled him on the Highway Project to fix America...

So sad. Mitt could have won this thing. If only he hadn't pretended to be the social issues uber-conservative; if he had stayed positive, instead of freaking out in Iowa, I really think he could have ridden over any loss there and on to the nomination. Instead, he gave McCain a narrative: the underdog outspent by the rich phoney. Underdog wins that one, every time.

McCain-Lieberman = Smoot-Hawley
Many well trained & well respected mainstream scientist such as Richard Lindzen, Reid Bryson, Hendrik Tennekes, Antonino Zichichi, William Kininmonth, Marcel Leroux, Tim Patterson, Roy Spencer, Frederick Seitz & many thousands of others of their equals, all comprehend that today's so called "Global Warming" (hysteria), actually falls well within known, natural, repetitive & cyclic, warming & cooling climate variables.

With all that said & true, it's important to recognize that McCain-Lieberman is the equivalent of the very foolish Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, & may turn what amounts to today's common (but somewhat painful) Recession, into another full blown & crippling "Great Depression".

This foolhardy environmental pseudo-science nonsense must not be embraced, just stopped.

Just who is going to do the processing of even half of them - 6,000,000 people in 90 days? That would be over 66,500 people a day.

A Greyhound bus seats 49 people. That would be 1,360 Greyhound buses a day going to Mexico from all over the country for 90 straight days.

Maybe I'm missing something and Mitt didn't say he was going to deport them. If he's not going to deport them, doesn't that make him a pro-amnesty RINO?

Mitt flat out lied about entitlements
Mitt (rightly) pointed out in the debate tonight that entitlements make up 60% of our federal budget and are expected to grow to 70% with baby boomers aging.

Fair enough.

So why did Mitt attack John McCain two days ago in Florida over John McCain's no vote on expanding Medicare entitlements? McCain took the conservative position (less government) and Mitt attacked him for it. Could it be becuase Mitt was trying to hurt McCain's standing with seniors in Florida? This is no different than Mitt promissing lots of goodies for Michigan to woo votes, it is blatant pandering by Romney.

Mitt was completely disingenuous on this matter. This is not just flip flopping, this is a flat out lie.

When the 06 election loss was brought up.

Romney could have put that lose right on the back of John Mexicali McCain.

Also, To think Ron Reagan would endorse McCain? What a knee slapper.

Ron Reagan said the worst mistake he ever made as President was Amnesty. Reagan would never endorse McCains energy policy or his anti Anwar vote to keep America dependent on other Nations any more then we had to be.

Huckabee Won Debate Hands Down
Hugh can make his post-debate orgasmic statements about Romney all he wants, but the fact is... anyone who watched the Reagan Library Debate tonight saw Mike Huckabee win BIG! While McCain and Romney bickered like school children on the playground, Huckabee gave honest, thoughtful, practical and most-importantly presidential-answers. I am so sick of the he said, she said behavior of McCain-Romney that I hope America will do something novel and give their vote to Huckabee on Super Tuesday. He has the experience, common sense and--sense of who he is... and that would make an excellent President. Huckabee's final response to the question of whether Reagan would endorse him made the others look like the boobs they were. (Ron Paul wasn't a boob he was just Ron Paul...and he barely got to speak).

I will give my vote to Huckabee. I hope America will wake up before it's too late. Vote for the candidate who isn't running for his own glory and vanity. Huckabee proves again he is closer to what Reagan was than anyone else in the room.

McCain is a Disaster
I have watched Senator McCain giggle, chuckle, snear, etc, this evening.

His answers are truly below average compared to Romney, as always. McCain offers nothing but Senatorial generics, running out of the clock.

He ducked the question on why he voted against the tax cuts again, quickly circled around to suggest McCain was part of the Reagan Revolution, ignoring his populist liberal divisive rhetoric.

Senator McCain bashes spending, but he was IN CONGRESS doing nothing to stop it. No reforms provided to address pork, spending, etc.

"Everybody knows, I know how to do that, We know about building walls"

He doesn't even look as if he is taking these things seriously.

Now he is smiling when Mr. Romney is forced to address McCain's LIE.

Ronald Reagan would have found it "REPREHENSIBLE".

Seeing this BELTWAY Elite's snide demeaning, juvenile belittling, of an ethical American Success from the Free Market has been regretful.

I see visions of Ford - Carter, Dole - Clinton.

Soon 2 aged Senators, with little accomplishment, employing vivid deceit, having an overt liberal embrace, pushing global warming populism, who vote against tax cuts, and are endorsed by the NY Times, will be seeking the most important office we have in Our Nation.

Two Celebrity Senators of John McCain's self described Washington Failure.

Embarrassing symbols of the Beltway Washington Elite for decades. 2 life long Politicians who have never had any serious, personal, CEO Experience.

Both with serious unethical skeletons in the closet: Keating 5 - WhiteWater, TravelGate, etc.

Two Egotists favored by the MSM !

Neither are optimistic - John McCain has stated repeatedly we need to embrace failure, to be straight!

Neither of these two are positive, pleasant, charming, or even funny. The polls suggest Americans are not happy with those in the Capital, yet they - led by Our own efforts - are encouraging the same dysfunctional incompetence.
