Responding to Rachel Sklar's Post: “President Obama Is Coming For Your Children”

The talented and fetching Rachel Sklar and I were all set to do Bloggingheads, but technical difficulties have sadly prevented it.
One of the topics we were to discuss was the uproar over President Obama's upcoming speech to school children. Over at MediaIte, Rachel has a post up on this topic and -- since Bloggingheads is cancelled -- I thought I would use this space to respond to her.
First, Rachel calls the uproar a "ridiculous controversy" and postulates that parents may have "secret latent sublimated racism" to blame for their concern.
Injecting race here strikes me as both tired and bogus. If you don't like the coarse political rhetoric of the day, that's fine. But George W. Bush and Bill Clinton both endured equally rough treatment (was racism involved when they called him BusHitler?). Heck, this has been going on forever; Jefferson called Hamilton a "Caesar" -- which was probably close to their version of the modern-day ubiquitous Hitler comparisons.
... But more specific to our discussion today, the racism meme ignores the fact that Democrats also attacked George H.W. Bush for giving a similar speech to school kids (perhaps latent anti-wimp bias was to blame?)...
Otherwise, Rachel's premise seems to be that the president wanting to speak to children is, after all, no big deal. I would actually agree with her on that point, if there were not two additional factors putting this debate in proper context ...
1). A few days ago, about 800 children in Farmington, Utah were subjected to watching a slickly-produced pro-Obama video. The video included shots of various celebrities making pledges. In one case, the pledge was to "be of service to Barack Obama." The video also includes lines about pledging to support stem cell research and pledging to drive a hybrid. Many conservative parents viewed this as propaganda and an attempt to indoctrinate their children. And I have no doubt the video (which is easy to embed into blogs) is partly responsible for the current backlash.
As Carol noted the other day, "can you imagine a video being played in any school featuring Americans pledging to:
-- support George W. Bush
-- do what it takes to protect our national security
-- preserve our time-honored moral values
-- fight to keep taxes low, so people can use their hard-earned money to support their families, not a bloated and wasteful government
-- help to preserve the free enterprise system that has made this country great?"
2). As Rachel notes, Obama's speech was not the only thing planned. Other "educational opportunities" would accompany the speech. For example, Education Secretary Arne Duncan sent letters to principals across the nation, encouraging them to have school children "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president." Unlike Rachel, I do find that a bit unsettling. Why wasn't the prompt what they can do to help America??? ... Oh yeah, it's all about him.
To be sure, Obama defenders will argue that President Obama merely wanted to give a nice inspirational speech to the school children of America, and how dare anyone suggest otherwise.
But I think when you put it in context, it becomes clear that the Obama Administration is responsible for this controversy. As usual, they overreached. What is more, they are so out of touch with mainstream America that they are actually surprised by the predictable outrage ...

Its like conservative spent the last year denying Bush was one of them them screaming about BDS every time a liberal brought him up but now I guess the statute of limitations is over on mentioning Bush and conceeding that he was indeed a conservative.
Now the enxt question is how much of the enxt fiur to eight years do you plan to use the strategy of "if bush did..." and will this be a new catch all for all polical situations.
This is why nobody listens to the conservtaives who cry wolf about racism-you have so little credibilty and more thanenough hypocrisy to go around. Perhaps if you all stopped overreacting to innocuous things and concentrated on some "real issues" you might "stand a chance." |

You nailed it, Matt. My youngest, who is the last one still in publik skrool, will be opting out of Dear Leaders teachable moment and not just to avoid possible brainwashing. It is also an act of 'civil disobedience' (since I'm a 'Boomer', but a volunteer for Viet Nam vet, I didn't get to get in on all the avant garde radical chic protesting back in the day. Thought I'd make up for it now by sticking it to 'The Man'. Questioning authority and all that.) It's also a matter of principle. Pols-all of them- should stay out of the schools...period, IMO. You wanna talk to the kids, fine. Make a speech and put it on CD. After the parents get to review it, we, the parents will decide if we want our kids to listen to you. Otherwise, "up yours". Hey, I'm starting to groove on this protest stuff. |

What is amazing is that brainwashing pupils has been a liberal effort for decades and since I am older than most of the lefty writers here who only remember Clinton as their hero, the facts are that major universities for decades have had a huge majority of liberal socialist even radical profs in the history, English and other liberal arts programs. Since I teach in college and have been for almost 50 years, it is amazing that liberal dopes will not admit this. Most of the lefties here have never been on a book committee or curriculum committee either in public schools or universities. I have. The facts that some of these books have in them are not facts but opinions and slanted at that. They are written by lefty profs , mostly from the E. Coast but some from Ca. too. They are mish moshes of burned over leftist hate toward American culture, our military and love to bring in multiculturalism vs say, one page on the 8 yrs. of the Reagan Admin. !! So pulleze none of this smart a.. commentary from sophomores from Berkeley on how the Obamabots with lefty Arne Duncan are not trying to fill the heads of pupils with left of center philosophy on every issue. It has been a ploy from the Left for years and it includes primary through college. That the public, parents are willing to send their kids to liberal universities at 40.000 bucks a year is not only a mystery but a travesty. |

So true. I honestly find it great fun to finally get to protest the hippies (and their progeny) since they are now the 'establishment', blah, blah. I'm glad I waited so long to have kids. I may get a size XXXL T-Shirt and tie-die it and make a sign and stand outside the school or something. LOL. It's fun seeing their angst when the shoe is on the other foot.

A few years ago I war my Peace through Superior Firepower tee shirt to one of my kids track meets ,caused quite a stir among a few teachers.

If You Trust Anything they Write or Say
I watched their reporting of this story last evening...and true to form, their parrot trolls are out in force with the same tired liberal strategy of irrelevant relevancy, projection, and purposeful obfuscation of the facts.
Yes...other presidents have spoken to the nation's schoolchildren.
But NO other president and his administration has submitted a politically-charged and self-serving "Lesson Plan" encouraging the teachers of those children to cultivate their youthful minds with cultish questions about "What can we do to help our president?" and "What do you think the president is asking you to do?" and "What do you think he will say next time?"
These children are being carefully programmed to think about, and ponder nothing but Barack Hussein Obama; both BEFORE and AFTER his speech. The White House and DOE, in putting this "Lesson Plan" together, even goes so far as to suggest follow up projects dealing with Obama's speech; kids testifying before their classmates about the speech (whether singularly or in groups of two); and writing letters about how they can "help" President Barack Obama.
Help him do WHAT?
This is unprecedented in a free country, especially the United States of America.
But the mainstream media last night, true to form, ignored this little tidbit...even though it ALONE is the source of ALL the protestations against the Obama regime. Naturally, they feign surprise at the outrage....insinuating that this is a visceral hate movement led by well-organized conservative protestors and Republicans.

As one fellow TH poster stated yesterday on one of these threads: What we are witnessing, with the administration of Barack Hussein Obama, is the insurrection and willful destruction of our Republic by misguided, self-proclaimed revolutionaries left over from the '60s hippie drug culture movement, being unleashed upon this country. This is just the continuance of SDS, the old Black Panther movement, and Vietnam protest movements. Barack Obama and his czars represent all the elements who, for silly reasons of their own, are against "the establishment" demonized by the hippies and yippies of the '60s. Communism and collectivism is the golden calf they have nurtured and deluded themselves in thinking is superior to free-market capitalism.

"Silly season" began during the last election cycle when too many Americans got caught up in the "feel good" idea of voting for a "celebrity" packaged candidate...
...all the while refusing to pay any attention whatsoever to the fact that THIS candidate, not only did not share American values...but abhorred the very Constitution in which they were enshrined.
Since being elected, Barack Obama has been unrelenting in his weird criticisms, denigrations, and visceral dislike of America and his arrogant talking down to voters is beginning to grate on the nerves of ALL Americans, not just conservatives who recognized him for what he was before he was elected.
Americans have found good reasons they don't want his speech to their children....THEY DON'T TRUST HIM!
And, although the writer and reporters in the MSM, obvious sycophantic and devout supporters of Barack Hussein Obama and his leftist anti-God, anti-Christianity, and anti-American agenda, continue to try to skirt the issue of why THIS speech is meeting with so much resistance, the people have more sense than you would give them credit for having.
While you try to place blinders on the people, there are other sources for the truth that you have no willingness to either report on, nor explore. We don't trust YOU either.

Pre Obama, the left used the race card with great effectiveness. They trotted it out whenever the arguments against their attempts to impose another social program on an unwilling people gained in volume.
Post Obama, the left seems to believe that they can use the race card with even greater impact, claiming that any opposition to their programs must be racist because Obama is black. To use the vernacular, "that dog won't hunt."

The attempt to re-institute the "Fairness Doctrine" under another name.

Obama is attempting to inculcate collectivism into the children's minds via the notion of "service."
Children should not be told to "serve" anybody or anything, whether the President or the nation. They cannot really understand such concepts, and it is not noble or good to attempt to brainwash them like that; it is inexcusable. They should be encouraged to take responsibility for their own lives and pursue their own dreams instead of wasting precious years of their young lives changing bed pans or ladling soup out of some crazy notion that they are doing good for some ineffable collective, such as "the nation."

Public approval ratings of Barack Obama may be falling quickly right now—but his rating of the American public is probably falling even faster.
The president won a decisive victory in November promising to rescue the ailing American economy through public spending, and to reform the health system with government at the core. He has certainly succeeded in spending money. The Congressional Budget Office now estimates that the national debt will balloon to $17.1 trillion by 2019. And he is trying valiantly to deliver on his second promise. Between keeping his promises and the signs of an improving economy, Mr. Obama has every reason to think his approval ratings should be flying high.
Instead, Gallup reports that disapproval of the president's economic policies has grown to 49% in July from 30% in February. Even among the president's core supporters, young people in the 18-29 age group, his overall approval has dropped 11 points since January.
Dissatisfaction is spreading into open protest as members of Congress try to explain the president's policies to the public. Angry voters have engaged in high-profile confrontations in town-hall meetings around the country over a proposed health-care overhaul that protesters complain is unaffordable, socialistic, incomprehensible, and which their representatives have not even read.
Many on the left attribute the public's growing disapproval to right-wing scheming. An op-ed in USA Today on Aug. 10 by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said the town-hall protests are part of an "ugly campaign" and are "un-American." A few days earlier, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid charged "sabotage."

In second place was the worry that the president is "leading the nation toward socialism" through government takeovers and bailouts.
What exactly is our problem with government spending? It is not just that we think it is wasteful and ineffective (although most recognize this to be true). Americans actually think the government makes it harder for people to get ahead in life.
In January 2009, the Pew Research Center asked about 2,000 Americans, "Do you think the government does more to help or more to hurt people trying to move up the economic ladder?" Amid the most frightening economic crisis in decades, more Americans still said the government would hurt than the number who thought it would help (50% versus 39%). Independent surveys from roughly the same period found that only one in five Americans believed he or she could trust the government.

Most Americans see their best future in the free enterprise system when (as a March 2009 Pew Research Center poll found) 70% of respondents agree that, "people are better off in a free market economy, even though there may be severe ups and downs from time to time." There is no evidence that more than a minority of Americans accept the idea that a $17 trillion national debt, greater reliance on government for jobs and health, and hyper-progressive taxation offer the hope they deserve for themselves and their children.
The administration and Congress can deny these truths with charges of un-Americanism and implausible conspiracy theories about the current citizen demonstrations. I attended a very civil Town Hall meeting held by Representative William Posey in Melbourne, Florida this week and oddly there has been no press coverage because it was civil, packed, it started with a prayer and the Pledge of allegiance and remained civil throughout.
