"Use It or Lose It" Loses

In an effort to pass some kind of energy bill before the 4th of July recess and having failed with their price gouging bill, the Democrats brought H.R. 6251 - the Responsible Federal Oil and Gas Lease Act sponsored by Rep. Rahall from West Virginia -- to the floor last week. The bill is also know as the "Use it or Lose it" bill.
Not only does it do nothing to increase oil production, this bill prohibits the Secretary of the Interior from issuing new leases for exploration for, or production of, oil or natural gas, unless the applicant certifies that he is “diligently developing” the leased lands or surrenders the leases. This bill would restrict the development of American energy, while sending a signal to the energy markets that petroleum had better come up quick or not at all, a move that could trigger higher energy prices and discourage investment in energy exploration.
19 Democrats joined 176 Republicans in defeating this "duplicate" piece of legislation. I say duplicate because Federal energy lease holders already must produce oil or natural gas within five to 10 years to live up to the terms of the lease and the law.
Interestingly enough, back in 1992, Speaker Pelosi – as well as Majority Leader Hoyer and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick Rahall (D-WV), author of the bill – voted for the very duplicate provisions of the current lease structure. According to Title 30, Subsection 188(a) and (b) of the United States Code, “any lease … may be forfeited and canceled … whenever the lessee fails to comply with any provisions of this chapter, of the lease, or of the general regulations… Any lease … shall be subject to cancellation by the Secretary of the Interior after 30 days notice upon failure of the lessee to comply with any of the provisions of the lease.”
So here we are in recess having left Washington, D.C. again without acting on any meaningful legislation to increase the supply of American-made energy to help lower gasoline prices. Now we know why Congress' approval rating is at 18%.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE ,SURPRISE. Why would anyone be surprised at any thing the congress does. These people need to go before they ruin this great country off ours. We need to clean house in Washington, either this fall or with a massive recall. |
|
whilr they were out the price of oil went up again to a new record. Drilling now may be our last chance before the middle east explodes into all out war and then there will be NO oil. Drilling is the answer not only for us but for our allies. We can then chose who to sell to and how much gets to where.
Climate change greenies are just going to have to pick up trash, plant a tree, burn candles, ride their bikes, and hold their breath(less co2).While responsible adults take charge and secure the country and make sure they and the rest of us have gas period to get to work.
No drilling is not going to stop the use of biofuels or save a polar bear. Call and email your congressmen.Fill their inboxes and voice mails. Maybe they'll have to admit that 78% of us want to drill. They need to be reminded that they work for us. |

Who in God's name actually thinks this Congress has done anything GOOD...other than Conservatives occasionally finding their b***s and standing up against Harry Nancy.
Seriously, these guys have done NOTHING in the last year...but get paid!
PATHETIC! |

18% approval rating, I don't think so! I laughed when I read that. In fact I am still laughing.
This is no suprise. No shock here! Nice they all left for their vacations. Don't worry about the people. You know the American people that you say that you care about and work for. |
|
I had a Lib friend of mine tell me today that he was all for an increase in the gas tax. He said he was for it because he wanted to punish all those people who drive SUVs. He said he would sit back and laugh as they had to pay $175 to fill their tank.
I was astonished. I didn't even know what to say. For the first time it hit me, this is really what these people think. There is no regard for the person. There is only vindictive rage and masochistic defense of the environment.
They rant about windfall profits, but fail to mention the government collects about 4 times that in taxes.
I highly recommend everyone consider signing Newt's "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less" petition at American Solutions. |

Hmmm. Wonder what Bachmann's performance rates on an approval rating. How can she point to an 18% approval rating for Congress without including herself in that low opinion? She'd be lucky to get 18%--unless it was a poll of the dim bulbs at True North, the new home for her tripe. |

...You have long outlived your uselessness. We are very sick and tired of you getting in the way of righteous human progress because of your holier-than-thou new-age ecotheism. They are not YOUR resources to give and take. They are OUR resources to use for our betterment. When enough people wake up to these facts, your political existence will be nonexistent. |
|
And the resources are for "your" betterment, not mine? Who's holier-than-thou, Cuban Pete? The greed you Republicons exhibit knows no boundaries does it?
And I suppose the resources of the Middle East are OUR resources to use for OUR betterment too? |

Wait a minute. Why wouldn't energy companies develop the leases they already hold, especially in this market environment? There's a piece missing from this story. |
|
The missing part of the story is a lot of those leases are for shale oil and a lot of the development has been challenged in the courts by environmental extremists.
In my opinion, there are conservationists (of which I am one) who take good stewardship of what they own and control, environmentalists that go a little to far in that they want almost no development and then the the extremists who want to take us back to a hunter gatherer society.
As Robert Heinlein said, People will ooh and aah at a beaver dam, built by beavers for a beaver's purposes and say how natural it is. Then they will go to a hydroelectric plant, built as a dam by humans for human purposes and claim how unnatural it is.
I am a human and favor human activity for human purposes. Not raping the planet, but using it in conservationist way, getting the most out of the resources, while keeping it as clean as possible.
Different way of looking at things. |

WAKE UP! people- we need TERM LIMIT TERM LIMITS is the only way to remove mediocre public servants |

Hey Monkeywrench: That 18% is the global approval rating for Congress, not any one particular representatives' rating. To be honest, you'd have to consult the specific reps' district voters to extract an accurate view of their dis/approval rating. As usual, you paint with a broad brush and, in doing so, destroy your credibility. So much for civil discourse! BTW, who is your representative? |
|
You wrote, "The bill is also know as the "Use it or Lose it" bill."
My edit would have read, "The bill is also known as the "Use it or Lose it" bill." |

What I've learned about the left wing of the democrat party is this: they HATE being told what to do (abortion rights, gay rights, etc) but they LOVE to tell others what to do and how to live (drive less, recycle).
There's a reason kids don't teach teachers, or children don't rule over their parents--unfortunately it's what government has become. The spoiled brats and stubborn students have grown up and become the majority party. |
