Government Spends More to Show How it's Spending
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 6:50 PM
Smartronix, Inc. has been tapped by the General Services Administration (GSA) to spruce up the government's stimulus money-tracking website Recovery.gov.  The agency awarded the $9.5 million government contract to Smartronix late Wednesday on behalf of the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board responsible for tracking spending under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act.  Think $9.5 million is a little excessive for redesigning a website?  Smartronix is also slated to receive an additional $8.5 million for website "maintenance" through January 2014.

Spokesman Ed Pound says the website, dubbed "Recovery 2.0," will be a "highly functional" website and rejects any suggestion that the government may be overpaying.  Meanwhile, the Washington Examiner reports that similar government websites have been developed in the past for significantly less money, costing as little as $10,000.

In summary, American taxpayers are being tapped to pay $18 million dollars for a website that already exists; a website created to report on how the government is  spending our money.  Oh, the irony!

Depends on what you want
A worldwide massive search engine type like Google, nah. Overkill. I'll spend the day on the Hill reading all the reports and then give you guys an end-of-day summary on a blog. Tell you what, I'll even drop my price- $250,000. Hire me.

"I'll do it ...for $500,000."

How many similar projects have you done?

I might tackle it for $5 million, but that would depend on the uptime, change rate, content management facilities, and traffic levels that they specify. Above a certain level of capacity and reliability, you have to go to some pretty tricky redundant and parallel architectures. Take a look sometime at what Google has to do to support their massive load and uptime requirements.

I am really interested in finding out what all of these Czars are being paid. What I saw thus far is that some are making $172,000 and others #158,000. We now have I believe at least 32. That adds up to a lot of money to pay people to do a job that we are already paying elected officials to do. Is it just me or do others wonder why we are spending this kind of money, money we have to borrow, to hire these additional people. It would have been nicer if we put around 100 people who would be really happy making 50 grand a year to work. It certainly would be more beneficial to the economy in the long run.

Obama's Spending
Why is any hard working voting American surprised? (Please google in Saul Alinsky and you will see exactly where Obama is taking us) Obama lied to all Americans with his "shovel ready jobs" bull! Hurry up! Pass the stimulus bill or our economy will collapse" Do any of you remember Obama's fear tacticts? We must impeach Obama and his czars if we want to keep our Republic. The people in DC DO NOT CARE ABOUT AMERICA OR AMERICANS! The only way we are going to save America is with each other no longer voting in people who voted for Obama's revenue killing bills and communicate at grassroots level to go to capitol buildings on 7/17 and march and do not go to work on 7/30!

"Highly functional for that kind of money it better moonwalk"

Ever build and run a high-functionality web site with very high traffic and content volatility? I have, and I don't consider that cost out-of-line.

the size of the government
The federal government is a giant hairball with too many departments, agencies, committees and regulations.

Obama isn't paying for anything. Net-taxpayers are.

And their children, and grandchildren, and great-grandchildren,....

Are you just a fool. So far there has been less transparency than we have seen by administrations in the past. Please tell me how this administration has been transparent when they sign bills that none have even read, Stimulus, Cap and Trade and I am sure the list will go on. Hand picked quests and questions on supposed Townhall meetings. Real transparency Ha.

Neo...I second your response..Bwahahahahahahahaha!

There is no transparency..only lies! Nobody reads any bills and nobody tells the truth about the agenda. Keep drinking that Kool-aid!

Obama's simply willing to pay
for transparency. Of course a web site dedicated to governmental transparency developed during a Republican Administration would only cost $10K, because Republicans could care less about transparency.

"Recovery 2.0," will be a "highly functional" website and rejects any suggestion that the government may be overpaying. Highly functional for that kind of money it better moonwalk and score touchdowns hit home runs and be the worlds best date. I thought hammers and toilet seats were expensive but wow.
