The Decline and Fall of the Obama
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 3:29 PM

Two superb essays on the ongoing collapse of the Annointed One's campaign.

From last week, Camille Paglia's meditation on the savaging of Sarah Palin and what it revealed about the democrats and their MSM allies.

From today's WeeklyStandard.com,  Michael Weiss' "Losing It: Democrats Despair As Obama's Campaign Falters."

Desperate Dems are now clinging to market woes as a sort of life preserver, as though a major financial crisis recommends the community organizer who has never spent a day running anything other than his flailing campaign. The defection of one high profile Hillary backer is just another straw in the very strong wind blowing in Obama's face, but it is significant because of her parting shot --branding Obama as "an elitist," which isn't exactly a bulletin so much as a confirmation of what millions had already concluded.

Obama's woeful running mate hasn't helped a bit while McCain's inspired selection of Sarah Palin has simultaneously unbalanced an already Bush-crazed Democratic base while stirring up long dormant sectors of the Reagan coalition as well as newly engaged interest groups.  Obama's hapless rushing from issue to issue with a Streisand fund-raiser thrown in to the mix only reinforces the understanding of Obama as an easily-panicked representative of the self-selected, supremely entitled cultural ruling class anchored in L.A., Manhattan and D.C.

It isn't much of a base to  work with, even when allied with the African American electorate and 95% of every faculty club in America.  The prospect of a complete meltdown into McGovern territory now looms.  An angry central command is lashing out --see below-- and even the MSM blocking tackles are looking dazed.

Obama could still steady the ship, I suppose, though he's never done it before.  He's never come from behind to win anything.  In fact, the only tough contest he has ever won was the primary against Hillary, and he won on points accumulated in the early rounds and because of bizarre rules.  There's plenty of good reasons to panic if you are a democrat.

Unless you are a Hillary Democrat, in which case the prospect of three years of "I told you so" beckons as a sweetener and a prelude to the postponed main event.
