"The Hurt Locker"
Posted by: John Hanlon at 6:28 PM

Several weeks ago, there was a major milestone in the war in Iraq that did not receive the news coverage it merited. As NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reported on June 29th about that milestone, "Pentagon and military officials report that the withdrawal of most U.S. military forces from Iraq's major cities has been completed a day ahead of tomorrow's deadline."  However, even with this dramatic change, American soldiers based in that country will continue to face real threats there as they work in partnership with the Iraqi military. One of the threats that Americans will continue to face in that nation is the threat of explosive devices, a threat that is explored in the new Iraq war film “The Hurt Locker”.

“Three members of the Army’s elite Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad battle insurgents and one another as they search for and disarm a wave of roadside bombs on the streets of Baghdad- in order to try and make the city a safer place for Iraqis and Americans alike.” So states the website of the film in describing the film's plot. The movie, like many other films about the war in Iraq, has been criticized by some in terms of its overall message about the war. (i.e. Does the movie support the war? Is it anti-war?) I can completely understand the rationalization behind such questions that speak to the intent of the film.

However one feels about the motives of the creators of this film, though, I think the film does an excellent job in capturing the intensity of being in a war zone and especially the immense intensity of a team of soldiers whose goal it is to disable explosive devices. While watching the film, there were numerous times that I wanted to look away from the screen so as to avoid being surprised by a bomb that suddenly explodes as it is being disarmed. The men and women who are in Iraq today disarming bombs have no such luxury and if a bomb explodes while they are trying to disarm it, they will likely be killed or seriously injured by it. With that in mind, I think the movie does a good job in conveying what this work entails and the inevitable risks that these soldiers, like so many others, face in doing their jobs.

On the other hand, I did have some concerns about the portrayal of the soldiers in the film. At times, some of the characters take unnecessary risks and the lead character himself puts himself and his team at a greater risk than is necessary in the war zone. I understand that soldiers on such a team are in danger because of the job itself but was it necessary for the filmmakers to say that some soldiers are so willing to put themselves in danger that they invite greater danger into their lives? Was it necessary for the film to make it seem like war and danger are druglike experiences that soldiers can become addicted to? Such ideas seem out of place in a film like this that has a much greater story to tell about a group of soldiers that we do not hear enough about.

Again, overall, I did enjoy the film for its portrayal of how soldiers often put themselves in harm’s way to protect the citizens of foreign countries. The men in this movie work to disable explosive devices knowing that a simple mistake or an overeager terrorist could kill them at any moment and those risks and acts of bravery should be explored more in films.

Even after the recent milestone in Iraq, such bravery is still on display from our soldiers in that nation and in other nations and movies like "The Hurt Locker" remind us of the incredible risks that our soldiers continue to take for the benefit of others.

Thanks for the post. Funny I responded to kaboom yesterday but never recieved an reply. Yes it is our soldiers that are responsible for our freedom. Too bad so many do not see that. Respect for the military amongst the libs is almost non existent. We are in real trouble with a believe system that does not realize what it takes to remain free.

Hey Dianne & Arch

The Soldier

It is the soldier, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer,
who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the soldier,
who salutes the flag,

who serves under the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,

who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Thank you for your kind words last evening. An apology from Kaboom would be nothing more than disingenuous drivel. He/She/It has shown that it is nothing more than a self centered user. Using the freedoms that we enjoy in this country but in no way willing to do anything to protect them. With an attitude like that I would say it is doing a very poor job at parenting. Parents are to teach their children right from wrong and respect. Apparently Kaboom could not possibly teach this as obviously it does not know of any of these values.

Arch says

"The blood is on your hands"

Perhaps you could explain these two statements. I assume that you believe that I have blood on my hands because my son is in the Military. And your other statement I must assume you mean that my child is less valuable than yours. If this country was attacked it would be my son who would be expected to shed his blood to protect yours. Please correct me if I am wrong. You and your BS elitist attitude here is reprehensible. First of all my children all educated in top tier colleges. One graduate of an Ivy League law school. Unlike your hero Obama mine did not do it through affirmative action but with brains and hard work. Oh and the government did not pay for their education their parents did. So now if you think your children as much better or more accomplished than mine or anyone else's here you are sadly mistaken. You expect others to sacrifice their children for your freedom and the freedom of your children. You are typical of what is wrong with country today. Yes my son would protect you and your family because he believes that is his job and he loves this country He will protect even the stupid ones like you who show no respect or love for this country and what it stands for. Oh and by the way sounds like my parenting skills are far superior to yours that is for sure.

Kaboom. You are a danger to our nation with that attitude. You prefer weakness and cowardice to might and virility. It was Reagan who said to always negotiate from a position of strength. The stronger we prove to be by our actions, the less likely our enemies will harm our citizens or troops. Your prescription of appeasement to our enemies is like stripping naked in front of serial rapists. It is unfortunate that lives are to be lost in maintaining that position of strength necessary to remain the greatest free nation on the face of the earth, but it is a reality that all free citizens must understand.
The blood shed by our troops is a direct result of our enemies evil and not our leaders sending them to protect our national interests.

Afghanistan; U.S. deaths at record pace
Posted on Mon, Jul. 13, 2009

KABUL, Afghanistan - A bomb blast killed two U.S. Marines in Afghanistan's dangerous south, where thousands of American troops have deployed in a massive operation to oust Taliban fighters from the country's opium-poppy region, officials said yesterday.

About 4,000 Marines moved into Helmand province this month, the largest Marine operation in Afghanistan since the 2001 U.S. invasion......

Another American service member died Friday in the United States of wounds suffered in Afghanistan in June, said Lt. Cmdr. Christine Sidenstricker, who confirmed the deaths of the two Marines on Saturday.

The three deaths bring to 104 the number of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan this year, a record pace. Last year, 151 U.S. troops died in the country. Overall, 193 international troops have died in Afghanistan this year, according to an Associated Press count based on official announcements.

Obama ordered 21,000 additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan earlier this year to help put down the increasingly violent Taliban insurgency.

The troops will help provide security for the Aug. 20 election, and help train army and police units that the United States hopes one day can provide security for the country."

Obama highlights troops' importance in Afghanistan
------
"As more and more US-led troops die in Afghanistan everyday, the US president says the ongoing offensives against the Taliban were essential for "stability" of the country.

"The most important thing we can do is to combine our military efforts with effective diplomacy and development so that Afghans feel a greater stake and have a greater capacity to secure their country," the US President Barack Obama said in an interview with Britain's Sky News television.

Calling the increasingly deadly conflict in Afghanistan as a "serious fight", Obama claimed that allied forces had "pushed back" the militants in ongoing offensives ahead of a crucial vote.

Afghanistan is due to hold presidential elections in August amid a state of uncertainty and insecurity.

However, Obama conceded that the troops in Afghanistan would face "tough fighting" in the upcoming months and would "still have a long way to go."

that Fox news and Talk Radio can round up hundreds of serving soldiers who WANT to go back and even wounded who pray that they will recover enough to rejoin their brethren? Think they're all actors or something?

What about Capt. Roselle? He lost an entire LEG to an IED. He came home, recovered, got a prosthetic and the underwent Airborne Ranger training. He PASSED with no special allowances and rejoined the men he'd led before. Soldiers will follow an Officer like that to the gates of Hell!!!

Sure, you can always find the 1-3% of malcontents but most military STILL support the war AND Dubya. More than I do and I'm a registered Republican. I'd register Conservative but want to vote in GOP primaries.

In some ways it may be too hard for you to watch but I sure hope those soooooo ignorant as to try and interrupt a discussion about the bravery of our troops will watch and learn.

God Bless you and your son.

"This was posted by Rep. Steve Davis (R) and it surely demonstrates that there are people who love this land and appreciate our soldiers.

Killed in action the week before, the body of Sergeant First Class John C. Beale was returned to Falcon Field in Peach tree City, Georgia, just south of Atlanta, on June 11, 2009 .

The Henry County Police Department escorted the procession to the funeral home in McDonough, Georgia. A simple notice in local papers indicated the road route to be taken and the approximate time.

Nowadays one can be led to believe that America no longer respects honor and no longer honors sacrifice outside the military. Be it known that there are many places in this land where people still recognize the courage and impact of total self-sacrifice.

The link below is a short travelogue of that day's remarkable and painful journey. But only watch this if you wish to have some of your faith in people restored.

Please share widely."

Article in Stars and Stripes
"Jeremy Renner trained with explosive ordinance disposal specialists at Fort Irwin in California to get ready for his starring role in the movie The Hurt Locker.

So he’s well aware of “what’s true, and what’s just Hollywood.”

“It’s not an EOD documentary,” he said in an interview with Stripes yesterday. “It had to be as accurate as we could within a feature film. But I know some scenes my guys were saying ‘Dude, we taught you better than that.’”

The movie – which follows a fictional bomb disposal team in Iraq – is getting strong reviews from mainstream press and a close eye from military watchers, something Renner admits makes him nervous.

“I hope that they just roll their eyes at the Hollywood stuff, let that be what it is. But if it helps bridge the gap between these guys and civilians, helps show some of what they’re going through … "

We viewed this movie yesterday in Los Angeles. I'm going to post some thoughts about it on my blog page so I'll keep this cursory.

"The Hurt Locker" is the first film that avoids denigrating the American mission(s) in Iraq.

There are indulgences of script and arc that cannot be reconciled with what our military trains, expects and receives from our troops. These 'indulgences' are artistic liberties that are present to promote character development. They do jar one with knowledge of military environments but they are do not ruin the essence or the action of the tale.

This movie is pro-troops and reflects well on America and our citizen soldiers.

Sargent First Class John C. Beale
This was posted by Rep.

Please share widely.
