Hillary: Looking To Be Selected By Superdelegates, Not Elected By Primary Voters
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 9:30 AM
Appearing on Hannity & Colmes last night opposite former Bill Clinton consultant Doug Schoen, I wasn't surprised to hear him argue that if Hillary gets a good run of wins between now and the end of voting in June, the superdelegates would turn to her as the nominee with the best chance of beating John McCain.

I pointed out that she is very unlikely to surpass Senator Obama in either earned delegates or total votes.  (Here's the RCP chart of votes cast, sliced and diced a number of different ways, all of which show Obama with a lead.)

Schoen is a leading indicator of D opinion though.  It looks and sounds as though the D.C. and party elites he represents are figuring out how to steal the nomination from Barack Obama, and they won't be letting the rhetoric of the Florida fiasco of 2008 ("count every vote,"  "selected not elected") deter them.

It is very difficult to imagine how African Americans or the young Obama vote could be reconciled to this result because they don't care about Jeremiah Wright or Tony Rezko.  The latter are invested emotionally (and many of them via internet contributions) in the "politics of change.  The former would never accept a take-away as other than the latest of a long line of Democratic Party betrayals of the party's most reliable demographic block.

I have to conclude that wiser heads will prevail and that Obama, bruised as he is by the Wright controversy and tainted as he is by the latest goings-on in the Rezko trial, will be the nominee.  The risk of a shattered party base and of a nominee with very high and fixed negative ratings is too great, and the possibility of repairing the damage to Obama's image too high to see other than the nomination of the candidate with the most votes and delegates.

I'll make a bold prediction. Crude price levels are unsustainable at current levels and will fall this year. I see no dramatic run up in demand that justifies current pricing. That opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it :)

Thanks for your insightful comments.

Peak...

"but we will be in a different reality by the time it comes on line."...at what price point?

Peak, I've studied Certified PE reserve estimates dating back to 1979. Guess what? They were all wrong. I did it for banks then...back when three of the top ten independent banks in the US were in Texas. How many are there now, or were there after the energy crunch? NONE.

"Oil field equipment is not built in a snap of the fingers. Mosy of the firms that build it are over seas."

Tell that to CAT. They didn't re engineer and design the D10 and D11 at the snap of the finger. But they were ready for it. And so was Joy Manufacturing. And KBR. And Schlumberger. They'll find an answer if PRICE is the only issue. As for site equipment specs, if Congress opened ANWAR there would be a flood of domestic equipment manufacturers ready to do business immediately. Financing for them would become a drill in riot control.

As to the ANWAR reserves who knows? Whence the ANWAR production estimate?

My original point was that, if the political will to grant the exploration and production rights were in place, the major E&P companies would step forward and accept the risk without government subsidies.

As reference, Kodiak Island was a major engineering challenge as the AP was being constructed but that didn't prevent E&P from going forward.

Certainly it is huge money.

The age of drilling equipment is not the issue; price is the issue. CAT ramped up to meet mining equipment demand very quickly….because of price. Their engineering and production is much more complex than rig specs. The same will occur in drilling …from rigs to engineering to support infrastructure: Frac companies, mud companies, rig haulers, roughnecks, geologists, they all respond to price.

Alaskan pipeline specs? Mandate them and they will come. I can do the math. Importing refined gasoline versus drilling and rebuilding a pipeline? Show me the economics. How about this: open bidding for ANWAR and exclude international producers not domiciled in the US from the auction. EXXON and private equity will crawl all over each other for the rights. No government subsidies will be necessary. Back to the math: Exxon alone presently drops $40,610,000 to the bottom line, AFTER TAX, on 404,000,000,000 in revenue….that’s 10%. They don’t need the subsidies.

Every energy exec I know would give anything to have an exclusive on ANWAR. This is a solution that can happen but for lack of political will.

It would probably take five to seven years to completely engineer and drill ANWAR. If such approval were made, the same period of time (probably less)could be used to construct domestic refinery capacity to absorb the ANWAR production.

Do you support that?

First of all...
...boy were there a lot of typos in the my post!

Now, LGF82 I think you need to re-read your Bible. Re-read it in its entirety.

The Bible teaches a clear distinction between what's acceptable for individuals and what's acceptable for the state. Individuals are never to take vengence on other individuals. God ordained that the responsibility for justice is with the state. By having a reliable state to enforce matters of justice, individuals can remain 'pacifist'.

The state is given authority to protect its citizens from internal threats via systems of laws and justice. It is given authority to protect its citizens from external threats via war. The state is never to be pacifist. The role of the state is to protect.

Does God like war, no. But war is the inevitable outcome of an uncontrolled combination of sin and power. It wasn't what God intended for this world, but it won't stop until all things are made new.

All I can say is...
...McCain had better choose a runningmate who is extremely likeable and good with the media.

Obama wouldn't be politically damaged if he were to run as Hillary's VP. He has a greater teflon factor than she does, and he's not a stiff like Gore. Gore crashed and burned because voters couldn't connect with him...in stark contrast with how they connected with his boss. Attracting votes based of partisan loyalty was the best he could expect.

I'd expect that they'd market a Hillary/Obama ticket as a 16-year Democrat juggernaut.

McCain and Hillary are roughly equal in terms of likeability. Obama will crush anyone who lacks the ability to quickly endear himself to his audience. He has to be able to cut deeply into Obama, and remain likeable at the same time.

Mind you...the two tickets would be worlds apart on substantative issues. However, there are a good many people who vote purely on emotion.

If you see the hand of God in it, perhaps it will help to calm you. If He knew the wars would come, it stands to reason He knows the outcome....and probably is even guiding it.

I don't think anyone in America thinks we should lose to the extremists, what we have are different approaches. We can invade every single country on earth to search for the extremists or we can have a smart sensible approach to fighting terrorism. This is the problem with SOME conservatives. You hold the view their is only one absolute way to fight terrorism and if others dont agree with that way they are naive, dont believe the threat exists, or want to get in touch with the feelings with terrorists. IIRC
Forcing a Roman to strike you on the the left cheek meant that he would have to acknowledge that he was striking you as an equal (b/c he would have to use his right hand to do so. The left hand was reserved for inferiors, and if your cheek were turned he would either have to use his right hand or give up and not strike you at all). Jesus was a very defiant pacifist.

He was an astute student of human nature, too. Note how, for ex, by going the extra mile, he takes the dominance aspect out of the demand. Bullies need to dominate, to "win"; do the same thing willingly and they don't get their fix.

Now put the two together: you can't dominate me and you can't fight me. So let's be equal.

Just my opinion, of course.

You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
—Matthew 5:38-42,

But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.
—Luke 6:27-31.

Focus: In order to defeat the terrorists we must kill them and bring them to room temperature wherever we find them

Terrorists are not some defined number of people, dont you understand that we cant kill all of the terrorists. What we can do is hunt them down and send them into hiding, killing as many as we can. The second step is to identify why Al-Qaeda has such a big following in the Muslim world. Part of that is the PERCEPTION, that the US is anti-Muslim. This is why things such as Abu-Garab, Guantonomo, waterboarding, and yes, the invasion of Iraq serve counterproductive purposes. With the invasion of Afghanistan, the more militant Muslims were angered by the invasion, however the more moderate saw the invasion as understandable. The invasion of Iraq was not. Also, by Bush backing Musharaff, he repeated the mistakes of why the Iranians resented us. WE SHOULD NEVER BACK TYRANNICAL REGIMES. Dont forget we started a coup in Iran to overthrow the democratically elected leader in pursuit of cheaper oil. We backed the tyrant Saddam Hussein in the 80's who oppressed the Sunni people, Al-Qaeda is Sunni. We backed the Afghan rebels against the Soviet Union, these people became the Taliban as well as Bin Laden. So yea you can simplify the world to black and white and simply state kill em all. But we live in a real world where that is not possible, we have to started winning back the hearts and minds of Muslims and enlist them in this war on terror.

Ummm. No, we don't.

Focus: In order to defeat the terrorists we must kill them and bring them to room temperature wherever we find them.

Focus Again: It happens that we have a full grasp of what motivates them.

3 of my 8 children are 'black'. Your right, they did not choose to be black - or did they? But after about 10 minutes in our home, we don't see the color, but the kids.

Wright was wrong, so was Huckabee. there should be NO double standard. No person who claims to be a preacher, should never spew hate and discontent. One of my children's sisters, is in a home with an adoptive parent who thinks like Wright and Huckabee. Guess what? not allowed in my home, and no contact happens between the sisters now. I don't need my child to learn that kind of stuff from anyone.

Through the Smoke, Behind the Mirrors
How it goes down:

The superdels just needed an excuse to select Hillary!, and now they have one. Obama was always too much of a risk to put up as the Dem candidate. Now that this uncomfortable issue has been settled, it's just a matter of damage control. And the only way to avoid mass defections is to run Obama in the VP slot.

This is basic political calculus, and there is only the one viable solution for the Hypocrisy Party. Obama will cave "for the good of the Party and my wonderful supporters and the people of this great country blah blah blah etc. etc." - in a 45 minute rendition of "The Narrative." His supporters will grumble but console themselves with dreams of a future where the Obamessiah finally wins the presidency after great personal sacrifice. And, the only real point, they will duly turn out and providide the traditional Dem bloc votes.

Creating delusions and living in them is what the Left does best, and this little comedy in one act will be no different. Done deal. Next?

Hold On...
To all those attacking me that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was justified to end the war I completely agree. If I were President at the time I would have made the exact same decision. My only argument is that from a pure Christian perspective the killing of any innocent human is never justified. Jesus was a pacifist.

I would also disagree with the argument that Wright was gloating about 9/11. I find that very hard to believe. He was simply saying that this county needs to look at what we may have done to provoke the attacks. A good analogy would be when an angry youth goes in and shoots up a school. He doesnt do it without a reason, usually its that kids in school were picking on him. This DOES NOT JUSTIFY his actions and it doesn't make the people who picking on the kids responsible for the shooting. It does however give us some understanding to the situation. The US did get involved in the politics of the middle east, taking the side of Saddam Hussein against Iran, we DID help overthrow the Shah, which directly led to the hostage situation. To simply state that the terrorists hate us for our freedom is naive and dangerous. For us to defeat the terrorists we have to understand what motivates them.

Everytime I hear that tired old argument about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I think of the hundreds of thousands of bomber crews, fighter pilots, Marines and Army infantry soldiers who lived, because the invasion of Japan did not happen. I also think of the probably millions of Japanese civilians who would have died if an actual bloody invasion occurred. I think how ravished Japan would have been after such a conflict. I also remember that more died in the conventional bombing of Tokyo than died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

But why bother with facts when you are having fun bashing the USA.

I think I described Wright's comments as anti-American.

Don't get me wrong, Wright is entitled to his distorted view of this country (just like Ward Churchill is entitled to his). But I am entitled not to vote or support Barak Obama when he chooses to tie himself so closely to a person like Jeremiah Wright. This was not an off the record conversation where Wright misspoke--he has not backed off any of these points and believes them to be true.

And you cannot justify Wright's arguments on the basis of Christianity. Granted, a pacifist would argue that any killing is wrong even in self defense (based on Jesus' "turning the other cheek")--but Wright went well beyond that. Wright seemed almost happy 9/11 happened. Wright thinks the United States is the primary problem in the world. Fair enough. That view is shared by probably 10% of the voting population in this country. But it is rejected by the vast majority of the voting population (conservatives, Republicans, independents, and moderate Democrats) which is why Obama seriously hurt himself over this.

Maybe, you could consider KKKA racist, but thats a bit of a stretch. Now I dont for a minute believe his conspiracy theory of the government spreading the HIV virus among the African-American community, but in light of the Tuskegee experiments cant you see how some MAY think that it is not beyond the government to do so? The most criticized aspect of his words, the chickens come home to roast argument was definelty in poor taste after 9/11 but not far off the mark. He was trying to argue that we are all Gods creatures, that the deaths of Americans are just as evil as the killings of Japanese. While that may be construed as unAmerican to some, it is downright Christian.

Drilling for our own oil will commence, along with building of refinery's to process our own crude. Thursday will bring a plan to deal with the illegal population in a humane and fair manner, which includes finish building the fence and giving everyone adequate time to get back to their countries or face deportation with no hope of return. On friday, they work on winning in Iraq and figuring out the weaking dollar (putting it back on the gold standard?) Saturday, they go separate ways to raise cash. On Sunday, they rest.

Meanwhile, the democrates are battling each other, while McCain/Romney has a plan.

oh, and BTW, if the "Dream Ticket" is
the decision of the Dem Superdelegates, that proves there really are no "wiser heads" in that insane asylum otherwise known as the Democratic Party.

Gee, the supers would combine the 50% of America that refuses to ever cast a vote for Her Thighness, along with the 80+% of the 90% of non-black voters who were likely offended by Obambi throwing his kindly white granny under the bus in order to save his own political skin and protect a nutty black racist, then what do you get?

President John McCain, by a landslide ... that's what!

athingortwo writes: Thursday, March, 20, 2008 12:35 PM
It's hard to believe there are actually
any "wiser heads" in the Democrat Party.

They're really in a bad bind ... if Obama continues to tank in the non-black voter segment (90% of the nation) over his association with vitriolic black racism, at some point the party leaders - which is in fact who the superdelegates are - are going to have to decide if they are willing to lose an election this year to preserve the party, or if the opportunity to compete against the evil Pubs now is too tempting.

If the supers choose the latter - counter to Hewitt's prediction - they'll surely try to coax Obama onto the ticket with the Hildebeest ... "for the good of the party, and 'your' people".

Then what happens?

Will he, or won't he?

Essentially, if Obambi succumbs and settles for the role of Her Thighness's "boy", he's essentially writing off his political career ... the Gorebot being Exhibit A for that theory. Would he do that for the Party?

And even if he did, would that really mollify the black and young voters he attracted and who would have even more reason then to despise the Broomstick Pilot for denying Obama's rightful destiny?

I think no matter what the Dems do now, they're basically screwed for 2008. The only question is, do they also screw themselves for the next four or five election cycles, or even forever?

The only way the Dems limit the damage to 2008 is for the supers to nominate BO.

As Karl Malden used to ask on those commercials long ago:

"What WILL you do? What WILL you do?"

ROFLMAO!

Did this get any MSM coverage. No. Why? Because it does not involve republicans---they can't place the blame on republicans------SO------their is no story. Their is no concern. Their is nothing.

Does it seem incredible, in 2008, that they do not have the systems, the ability to have a definitive "count" by now? Yes.

The democrats are a trainwreck. Only in August will they begin to realize it. Why have they not realized it thus far.

Isn't this why they have SuperDelegates?
To represent the long-term view of the Party? Why have SDs at all if they are nothing but rubber stamps for the whims of the moment? They do represent the Democratic Party, since they all are (or were) publicly elected officials. In a way, they are analagous to the U.S. Senate - elected for longer terms and not equally apportioned among the population.

From what I've read, the SDs came into being as a result of the George McGovern debacle, where short-term enthusiasm gave the Democrats a no-win candidate. Obama vs. Clinton is precisely the type of situation the SDs were invented for. It's silly to speak of them "stealing" the nomination from Barak Obama if in fact they select Hillary Clinton.

Now I agree that the obamaniacs will be sadly disillusioned if Hillary gets the nomination. That's a factor the SDs must consider. They also need to consider Wright and Rezko, and how that will play out. Especially among the swing voters in the swing states.
Frank writes: Thursday, March, 20, 2008 11:23 AM
Maybe so but
regardless of who they eventually pick as their nominee the GOP stands to gain - - a lot. If it's Hillary the "most reliable demographic block" will be anything but. Their p***edoffedness will make Florida 2000 look like a lovefest. As Wright demonstrates and Obama justifies, those folks can hold a grudge.

What is the GOP doing to prepare for this contingency, anything? Seems to me it's time to get a great big brand new wlecome mat for the big tent, something with an African trim would be nice.

If it's Obama, moderate fencesitters will be more than comfortable swinging toward a war hero patriot who, as a bonus, has similar reservations about hard core right-wingers as they do, versus a guy while claiming to be a patriot has no qualms about keeping company with America haters for 20 years.

As unlikely as it may have seemed not too long ago, if the war continues to go well, the economy turns around, and the magic strategy of letting Democrats be themselves keeps working so beautifully the future of the GOP looks exceptionally bright.

Happy first day of spring everybody!

Dems are in a hard spot., but...
...they can avoid the kind of fratricide we're all anticipating if either 1) Obama stages a surge - not just in the electoral polls, but in the opinion polls - thus making Super-Delegate fiat impossible, or, conversely, he flames out completely, persuading even a critical mass of his own followers that he's unelectable. The latter scenario could include a knockout scandal, or the gradual reduction of his constituency to its hard core. It could also include Obama himself backing out, thus earning himself applause for his magnanimity and a chance to return again as the frontrunner at some future date.

He never should have risen this far, this time around, and 4, 8, or even 12 years of seasoning would be nothing compared to his potential
