From Rudy to Romney
Posted by: Patrick Ruffini at 10:29 PM

I’m a longtime Rudy guy. In 1989, I remember staying up late on Election Night watching his losing battle with David Dinkins, and cheering four years later when he put New York back on the road to recovery. Even before 9/11, he was a fighter who brought his city back from the brink, and he wasn’t embarrassed to publicly shame the corrupt and depraved New York left. I remain convinced that had he brought a little of that pugnacity and grit to this campaign, he would have won Florida and the nomination. He didn’t wind up running a great race, but Rudy Giuliani is a great American, and I continue to believe he would have made a great President.

With Mayor Giuliani now all but out of the race, I have no qualms about supporting his fellow chief executive Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination.

Despite the outcome in Florida, Republicans across the nation should spend the next week thinking long and hard about the demoralizing prospect of a McCain nomination.

There has been a fair amount of discussion of flip-flopping in this race. Well, McCain has changed a few of his positions too. He changed away from conservatism. In the 1980s and early 1990s, he was a solidly credentialed member of the Reagan-Goldwater coalition who was right in line with the people of Arizona. In the late 1990s, when he saw that he could get better press for his dark horse Presidential aspirations as a “maverick,” he changed. McCain could fairly point out that he stood on “principle.” But it is equally fair to point out that those principles aren’t ours.

Over the summer, a few of us — including McCainiacs Soren Dayton and Patrick Hynes — had a lively discussion about the future of the conservative movement. I believed then, and still do, that we desperately need to change. The fractures in the party this primary season — with fiscal cons taking out a hit on the social con standardbearer (who never had a chance to win the nomination), and Huck’s Army refusing to join with the most viable conservative alternative left after all hope was lost — shows just how badly we need to reunify the movement.

While the answers will be different than those of a generation ago, the attitude needs to be the same: that we are reclaiming the Party for long-lost principles with strength and assertiveness, not retreating and simply becoming more like the left. McCain represents the later kind of change.

Mitt Romney gets that you don’t win by retreating. You win by winning. There will be no pale pastels on the Democratic ticket this fall — and I would not want to go up against them with the sense that we somehow had to trim our sails, to elevate our party’s most ardent internal critic, in order to remain in office but not in power. At best, this is a reprise of how Clinton hollowed out the Democratic Party (see how their hearts are with Obama), and what Bush and the Republican Congress did with respect to spending. McCain would reclaim the spending mantle, but would surrender on all other aspects of domestic policy.

Mitt Romney is a better candidate than he lets on. His business acumen has hardly been explored in this campaign, at least not early enough. He is, as they say in Boston, wicked smart. Of all the candidates running, it is hardest to see the colossal managerial failures of Katrina happening under his watch. His plan wasn’t perfect, but I like the fact that he’s a Republican who’s tackled the health care issue. He can communicate about matters of war and peace, and his instincts are sound. He could position himself as a clean break on the economy. Attributes he had to soft sell in the primary campaign would provide attractive contrasts to Hillary Clinton in a general election. And in Presidential elections, Governors beat Senators. Romney is our last chance of getting that historically winning combination.

When it comes to the electability question, don’t focus on horserace numbers. Focus on the fundamentals. After weeks of fawning coverage, and weeks of seeing the press swooning for Obama and beating down Clinton, John McCain is no better than tied against Hillary. When it was last Clinton vs. McCain as the frontrunners, he ran worse than Giuliani and was seen as less dynamic. I expect that with either Romney or McCain, the race would settle into a 3-6 point Clinton lead in the near term, though it would tighten in the fall as voters focused away from Bush and on the choice between the two candidates. Politics is rarely as static as the early polls show, as this nomination fight proves in living color. Remember that Bush 41 wasn’t given much of a shot at this point in the ‘88 cycle and Gore was consistently behind by double digits and came within 537 votes.

None of this is to diminish John McCain as a true patriot. No matter who wins, we must quickly get behind the winner (I’ll have more on this tomorrow). I would gladly support McCain over Hillary because he is right on the transcendent issue of our time. But Romney would do everything that McCain would on the war, and he would be vastly more conservative on everything else.

Huh? Mitt cut and ran from SC, where a sound defeat there set him up to get pommeled in Fl.

There is nothing in Mitt's background that even hints he would be strong on the war. No military service, no foreign affairs experience, nothing.

The voters of SC and FL have spoken for McCain.

I read Patrick's post twice, but now even the room I am sitting in is spinning.

When
will the Romney supporters understand? Americans don't like Romney. It's a gut thing. They dislike him as soon as he opens his mouth. He comes across as a shady used-car salesman in a new suit. He has no authenticity, none whatsoever. That's how he is viewed by the majority of Americans. A large majority, too.

If you Romney supporters can't understand that, then I'm sure you've purchased a few used 'lemons' in your day...from people just like Mitt Romney.

Can't do it
As a life long Republican, it pains me to say this but I cannot vote for McCain in the general election. Yes, I know that is handing over the Whitehouse to the dems, but I still think it's better than McCain being in there for two reasons. First, McCain will run the government just like the Dems would. He's been there so long he wouldn't know how to do it any other way. When everything gets even more screwed up, I would prefer a Dem in the Whitehouse, so the Republicans don't get all the blame.

Second, the next president is going to appoint Supreme Court judges. As with the other issue, I would rather have the liberal nut-job judges being appointed by the Dems, rather than by a Republican. Given his actions with the last judicial confirmations, I have no reason to believe that McCain won't appoint judges that the New York Times won't approve of. He seems to base all of his actions on what the liberal media likes.

I know that a lot of people say we need McCain so we can fight the war on terror, but nothing he has said tells me that he will be much different than the Dems on that issue either. Yes he's right on Iraq, but he is wrong in not wanting to vigorously interrogate the people that want to kill us. He is dead wrong in wanting to give OJ trials to terrorists captured on the battlefield.

Since he doesn't have anything that makes him significantly better than the Dems, and since he will govern like a Dem, I refuse to validate his destruction of the Republican Party by voting for him.

Liberals ARE CELEBRATING !
Liberals everywhere on the internet are cheering the McCain victory...

These are message boards, where the emotions can get pretty hot.

So many who were once saying they prefer getting Romney in the RACE, have revealed it was just as suspected, a big fat facade.

Sorry Mr. Ruffini, although I hope the McCain folly can be stopped, I highly doubt it.

Democrat Liberals in SC and NH, knew exactly what they were doing by sabotaging the more conservative alternatives.

In Florida, we hear of more independent influence in the once 'closed' primary.

Seems a vast number of those who favor amnesty, favored McCain.

None of it matters now...

The MSM will build up McCain endlessly...

McCain will be perhaps the weakest candidate I have ever seen.

He is the oldest of all, a Senator of 24 years, jaded, bitter, angry, who voted against TAX CUTS!

McCain actually resorted to Clintonian lies this weekend...

it is stunning.

And I know I really have no inspiration to vote for this tired Senator in the General.

Will the liberal independents stick with him?

I doubt it...

Geraghty the Indispensable
1. A few weeks ago, the CW was that the Republicans were doomed to weakness by means of a protracted battle not likely to end short of a brokered convention, whereas the Democrats were united behind Hillary.

2. I’m a Fred guy. It’s galling to have to support McCain, but I will. Romney made it easier by promising ethanol subsidies in Iowa, promising auto subsidies in Michigan, and now aligning himself with the AARP in Florida. We at least all know the ways in which McCain will grate.

3. Alarming statistic: the number of Democratic voters almost equals that of Republican voters, despite the absence of any real contest in the Democratic primary. Our unity can’t come soon enough.

4. The Republicans need an inspired VP choice.

Iraq is over. We won. Not even Hillary will be able to lose it for us with another year of growing stability in Iraq.

Having McCain as the standard bearer of Conservatism while opening the borders, pushing climate initiatives and higher taxes will devastate Conservatism. How long would it take for a Democrat Congress and a McCain President to re-institute the fairness doctrine?

Keep Hugh away from sharp objects...
Certain conservative opinion makers are not pleased.

Rush Limbaugh, Hugh Hewitt, much of the roster at the National Review and many (but certainly not all) of their more conservative talk radio and blogger colleagues are beside themselves at the prospect that one of the Republican contenders they deemed to be “not conservative” might be nominated. As Mike Huckabee won Iowa, John McCain took South Carolina and Fred Thompson bestirred himself to draft a note withdrawing from the race, the fretting has intensified. How could the voters reject their advice?

http://www.observer.com/2008/what-will-rush-hugh-say-if-mcc ain-wins

That's easy, their advice was wrong.

Ponder this Romneyphiles...
As for Mr. Romney...who has underperformed in the early going—he certainly was a dutiful spokesman for every possible item on the conservative wish list, but perhaps he was a bit too dutiful. His penchant for pandering grew to ludicrous proportions as he not only reversed himself on a long list of policy positions but cooked up a distinctly unconservative proposal for rescuing Michigan’s auto industry just in time for its primary. When he finally reverted to the “real” Mitt Romney—an optimistic businessman with no compunctions about directing an activist government—it was clear that even his newly minted conservative persona was in a Bain-like turnaround.

Sorry to disagree with you. I live in Arkansas. The local party folks are mostly for Romney. However, talking with people I know outside the party I found most leaned very much towards McCain.

I know I do not like McCain Feingold either. I do not agree with much of the Global Warming.

But I do not agree with the crazy spending by the Republican Congress. Do you really think Romney would do anything to control that?

Why is it OK for Romney to rasie taxes in Massachusetts, but not ok for Huckabee in Arkansas and for McCain to stress cutting of spending.

On the timetable issue Romney should not have said anything about timetables period. In the context of the time period he made the statement, it had the effect of seeming not to support the President. The words may not have technically done that. However, he just should not have mentioned timetables. If they are secret, they should have not been mentioned in any manner.

This is not 1980. The wind was Republican that year. It was not just a Reagan wind. This year I am afraid that the wind is Democrat. Why do you knock a candidate who has appeal to independents and Democrats? I do not understand it.

I do appreciate your willingness to say you will back the winner. I promise that, too, if the political lanscape changes and McCain is not the nominee.

You don't get it
Voters do not like Romney. It is that simple. He has outspent all of his competitors combined, yet still continues to lag. Exit polls revealed that when it came to character and virtue, Republicans chose McCain in overwhelming numbers. Also, you need to stop looking at the Republican race in a vacumn. The old rules no longer apply. The country, Republicans and Democrats, are tired of the status quo. They are rejecting the institutional candidates like Guliani, Thompson and Romney. They are voting for Obama and McCain because they belief they will put principal over party. That they will cross partisan lines if necessary to forge consensus that helps the country, even if it hurts their party.

Tonight, Romney lost. So did the old guard. As did talk radio. In large part, because you are mired in the past and desperately trying to hold on to whatever power and influence you have enjoyed for the past two decades. Voters are tired of polarization -- the very thing that talk radio feasts upon.

Welcome to a brave new world!

There are real reasons to go against McCain...McCain (FOOT SOLDIER for Reagan...HAHAHA) cannot win on HIS record. He's the most LIBERAL Republican on the ballot...(he has aligned himself with too many liberal issues ie...Gang of 14, remember McCain/Feingold?, defected with Ted Kennedy on education, plus disapproved of Bush's tax cuts, & weak on immigration.)

He's too bombastic to be President. He SUCKER PUNCHED Romney yesterday w/ his DECEITFUL accusations about timelines & robo- calling...he's a lib all the way, even running a Clintonesque campaign.

The FOOT SOLDIER'S jealousy of Romney is crystal clear. Is it because Romney's a Mormon or is it because Romney's been successful, maybe because Romney's exposed his failures & makes him accountable, or a combo of all??

EVERYONE who CORRELATES MITT & $ IS 100% JEALOUS!
True conservative Republicans consider the candidates record & goals for our country's future...not petty issues like good looks & $...One should not take anyone w/ these views seriously, but should realize that those w/ these views are lacking a few brain cells!

I especially like your last line, "...Romney would do everything that McCain would on the war, and he would be vastly more conservative on everything else. "

Romney is emerging as the clear conservative choice here. Florida has a ton of elderly people and military vets, who automatically vote for McCain, plus amnesty is actually popular in this state. As the debate moves on, the choice will be clear: amnesty or no amnesty. No tax cuts or tax cuts. While McCain's military service is respected, his positions on issues are despised.

I truly think this narrowing of the field favors Romney.

Ted, you can't blame anybody for this loss. Remember National Review endorsed Mitt just before IA and he lost. Mitt learned a lot from business school, but I am not sure what he learned in law school because he can not make a winning closing argument to voters. NV,WY and UT has enough mormons to give Mitt a win, and in Michigan he used his dad to win "i am sure michigan will vote for another romney". Mitt can not connect with voters because he is not authentic. The man should have campaigned as a moderate pro-choice candidate and he would have been authentic. Now he just can't make the conservative label stick and it's too late to change his mind, and there aren't enough republicans who believe he will do what he says he wants to do - his record is too inconsistent. Remember he has outspent everyone 5:1......

The media love McCain because a campaign between him and the Dem will shift the national dialogue in a more liberal direction. He can't articulate conservative principles because he fundamentally doesn't believe them.

Piinky, with the republicans in
the minority (Senate and house), we need a strong president who knows how to work across the aisle and to be unwavering when it comes to pro-life issues and defense/foreign policy. Mitt will buckle everytime the democrats say boo! he is unable to stand strong on any position because he lacks clarity or conviction (not sure which one). McCain can and he will lead this nation even with a democratic majority. Mitt will morph into Mitt version 6.0 and blame the democrats for all the liberal legislature. and when Jihadists come after us, Mitt will begin calling lawyers and negotiating timetables "in secret" - what??? It was not the timetables that made Mitt loose tonight, he lost because voters do not believe him or find him to be authentic. He has outspent everyone 5:1 and he can not buy the republican party - it's not for sale.

I was re-reading history about how the GOP came about. It was via the destruction of the old Whig party in the 1850's. Reading these blogs it suddenly occured to me that the GOP may be on the edge of such a precipice. That means, of course, that the dems will win in 2008 but it may be the beginning of a coalescing of a new conservative movement.

Since the Demcorats do not understand our enemy, they could very easily loose anything that has been gained by not even trying. Again I want to warn those who say they will not support the winner, risk exclusion from selecting the nominee in 2012, if we loose in 2008.

I am so tired of people using the excuse that Mitt should not be elected because he has outspent everyone 5:1. Could be that he has the funding from his supporters. He hasn't tried to buy the election.

He can not buy the republican party anyway- it's not for sale because it has already been bought.

Did you know that to get elected to his first House seat back in 1982, his campaign was partly financed by $167,000 that his wife lent to his campaign (which helped him outspend his opponents).

I guess he couldn't buy that election either, he had to borrow (or marry into it).

The thing that gets overlooked...
A lot of people have been saying that Romney is a "real conservative" or the "the only real conservative in the race" and things like that. Granted, he's considerably more conservative than McCain (D) Arizona, but he's still not anything like a "true conservative." Unfortunately, there weren't any running. Some of them had a bit of it, but there was not even one who stood comprehensively for the principles laid out by the Founding Fathers. Regardless of who gets elected, we all lose. It will either be the big government party (Republican) or the huge government party (Democrat).

The choice is between a punch in the stomach and a punch in the head.

And either one is followed by a kick in the crotch.

Romney just happens to be the only candidate who actually has a record of successful large-scale leadership, so maybe he'll keep it afloat a little longer. McCain is an unstable old man who wouldn't know conservatism if Frederic Bastiat smacked him in the face, Paul is a crazed spider monkey, and Hillary and Obama are outright Marxists.

I vote to ignore all politicians out of existence.

I think this is one of the evolving stories of the Republican contest. If you like Bush, you are inclined to Romney (or one of the other candidates, all of whom but Ron Paul do better among Bush supporters than Bush opponents). If you dislike Bush, you are inclined to McCain.

-From a certain perspective, this is an ironic feature of this campaign. McCain has been campaigning, in part, on the surge - the hallmark of the Bush presidency for the last year. Romney has been campaigning on fixing Washington.

Shock or Disbelief: How could this be, his campaign was DEAD last summer?

Denial: McCain cannot win, Mitt Romney is the stronger candidate. American want to round up all Mexicans and put them in concentration camps. He is against waterboarding, so he is not qualified to be a Republican.

Anger: I am sitting out this election or voting for Hillary! Just watch me do it!

Guilt: How did we ever let this happen? What did I do to allow the GOP to sink so low?

Depression: Pass me the liquor. I feel sick.

Bargaining: McCain better make things right with the base, he has to get approval from Rush, Hannity and then agree to have Fred Thompson as his running mate to keep him in line (actually even I hope for that!).

Acceptance and Hope: Well, it is better to win the general than to face President Hillary in the White House for possibly two terms. GO MCCAIN!

Straight Talk 1
Romney is now hitting his stride as a politician. He has real issues that he cares about that he is running on. (immigration, the marriage amendment, the economy, and since McCain lied about his record it is now very personal).

1. If McCain were to win the nomination the immigration Republicans will not support him. He is the enemy just as much as Hillary, Obama or Bloomberg. They would have no candidate in the race and will put all of their money and effort into electing anti immigration congressional and senate candidates. That alone will insure McCain's defeat.

2. McCain gives up our best cross over voting issue-immigration. Instead the Rep Party will have to run on Iraq and more of the same. Even worse McCain has promised "more wars". That is a loser in the general election. Further, McCain has said he does not understand the economy. That will become an attack ad in the general election.

3. Huckabee is not really running for VP. Adding him to the ticket does not offset McCain's weaknesses. McCain will not choose him. Huckabee is running as a blocking back to prevent Romney from stopping McCain.

4. Romney needs to go on. No one knows what will happen. He can still beat McCain. However, this is similar to the first time Reagan ran for the Presidency against Ford. It is unlikely that the Rep nominee will win in Nov. especially if Bloomberg gets in. However, the experience and the name recognition and organization that Romney creates in 2008 will serve him well if he runs in 2012.

5. This is the first time I have really feared for the future of this country. It is on the edge of deep and serious trouble.

We need major reform on immigration, the economy and we need a comprehensive plan for resolving the Middle East. McCain is part of the problem in those areas. He is a disaster on immigration, weak on the economy and offers more wars. The voters in the general will not support that.

Bill Kristol writes in from Fox News Channel:

"Three points:

"A well informed Democrat told me tonight that it was very doubtful that Al Gore would endorse Obama in the near future - but 'keep your eye on Jimmy Carter.'

"Most interesting statistic in the Democratic exit poll: Obama ran even with Clinton among voters who decided in the last week. That suggests that he has a more even playing field moving ahead toward Super Tuesday than past poll numbers would suggest.

"On the Republican side: About a third of the voters called themselves 'somewhat conservative.' McCain did as well with those 'somewhat conservative' voters as he did with the Republican primary electorate as a whole. Among the quarter or so of the voters who called themselves 'very conservative,' McCain lost to Romney by about 2 to 1, getting only 20 percent of those voters. This suggests to me that McCain's 'conservative problem' is not as dire among conservative voters as you would think listening to conservative elites. And in fact, among the very conservative Republican voters, it's quite possible that they prefer Romney or even Huckabee to McCain, but the fact that they prefer Romney or in some cases Huckabee to McCain doesn't mean that they view McCain as unacceptable.

"What's more, if you look at McCain's favorable/unfavorable rating, it's strong among all Republicans, including conservatives. So McCain has some work to do with more conservative Republicans, but not as much as you would think from listening to some talk radio or reading some conservative blogs. He'll have to figure out which conservative elites can be brought around - and which he'll have to go around."

WHY Romney is great, decent, unique
When this country was so miserable, FLAT ON ITS FACE right after 9/11

The Real man of the hour was Mitt Romney, AND that man of incredible inspiration at this country’s low point did not get the credit

Romney did NOT cancel the Olympics because of 9/11 !
Despite the hand wringing, screaming from the wimps here in the USA
And around the world to cancel it !

ROMNEY gave this country back its SPIRIT, pride, inspiration, GLORY, INCOME, grace, dignity, courage, SUCCESS, FOOT in face of evil: when he
Proceeded with holding the Olympics and had
100% of the nations participated:
NO Nation BACKED OUT
NO SECURITY GLITCH

AND they RAKED IN HUGE new MONEY FOR THIS COUNTRY
And the Olympic organization

WHEN ROMNEY took over the Olympics, it was
Doomed, devastated
falling apart
Had a sea of red ink

HE LEFT IT IN THE BLACK

Did not take a dime for his 3 years of work:

THAT IS INCREDIBLE PROVEN LEADERSHIP

McCain is so hated by Republicans they won't vote for him.... they will simply sit out the election for the first time in their adult lives.

If Romney is our guy how many Republicans sit out? I have yet to hear anyone say they will sit out if Mitt is the GOP candidate.

People.... the lib media has set this up perfect for the Democrats. They get rid of all the conservatives and they get the RINO to be the GOP candidate. Presto.... the conservative movement is destroyed and the Democrats roll to victory in November.

Brilliant.

For those who argue I'm handing the White House to Hillary by not supporting McCain. That's probably true. However, whether we elect Hillary, Obama, or McCain, in the end I don't see a drastic difference in the direction of this country. Fundamentally, all three would bring over reaching government, higher taxes (or status quo), and weak national security. While McCain may be strong on Iraq his weakness on border security totally undermines his National Security creds.

On his program, Hugh was grumping about how he would enthusiastically support Rudy or even Huck, but only reluctantly back Mac. Funny. That's not how I remember it after IA, when Hugh was assaulting Huck's character and Huck's political incorrectness.

Hugh is like Mitt--he'll say whatever to win. Even Mitt's concession speech tonight was lame. Greatest generation, passing the torch, that crowd in Washington, blah blah blah. Talk about uninspired.

This week, Hugh--and other Reep elites--will try to boost Mitt's candidacy with an ABM movement. Unfortunately for them, it looks like voters are already on an ABM jag--Anyone But Mitt. His fellow candidates detest him, he panders, he plays dirty, he flipflops, he is backed by the very Boomer leaders who have failed this nation so miserably over the past generation or two.

Well said my friend. Romney was soooo lame tonight, making sure to touch all the right-wing hot buttons- down with the teachers' unions, up with the God-fearing folk, love me I'm a multi-millionaire busiessman, blah blah blah. He did miss the "law of the sea treaty", that crucial issue to the American people:), but not much else.

It's particularly ironic to see Patrick Ruffini lamenting the loss of the so-called Reagan-Goldwater coalition. You guys lost the Goldwater part of that coalition decades ago when you sold out conservatism to the right-wing religious hucksters, as Goldwater spent his last years warning you. No one who truly believes that government should get its' nose out of peoples' private lives has a home in the modern Republican Party. It is why independents are shunning guys like Romney, aside from his basic untrustworthiness and unlikeability.

I will vote for whoever the Democrats nominate, mostly because of the courts. But I will be comfortable with a President McCain. The strategist in me really wants to run against Romney, but the patriot in me is please to see the common sense of the Republican average voter.

Now if we can just convince the average Democrat to have enough common sense to send the Clintons packing....

The Seven Stages of Voting for McCain

GO MCCAIN!

I see the Romney/McCain race as a Hamiltonian choice. While it would be better for us Dems if Mitt got the nomination, McCain--as much as we disagree with him on fundamental matters--is a man of character and patriotism. Romney is just a weasel. I'd rather hazard the increased likelihood of a Republican Presidency via McCain than run even the smallest risk of four more years of callow, self-satisfied Boomer conservatism. Our country has had enough. It is enough. The time has come for the American right to go back to the drawing board--much as we on the left spent decades in the wilderness after Vietnam and the Great Stagflation.

Conservatism will always have a role to play in our country. This is a conservative nation. But under the Boomers, conservatism has become an emotional personal, morally relativistic, tabloidized charade. The American right can do better--much better--than Jesse Helms meets Arthur Laffer meets Foxnews. Enough, already..

HERE ARE THE FACTS:

1. Florida is a CLOSED PRIMARY.
2. Only tose REGISTERED REPUBLICAN a month agoi were supposed to be allowed to vote.
3. Rush announced yesterday that 'someone' had instructed poll workers to allow INDEPENDENTS to vote REPUBLICAN. This is ILLEGAL.
4. The final turnout was 20% INDEPENDENTS/DEMOCRATS.
5. The final turnout was 28% MODERATES / 11% LIBERALS. This is 8% higher than in SC's "OPEN" PRIMARY.
6. McCain carried the INDEPENDENT/DEMOCRAT votes by 2:1.

People, what we have here is MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD. These results are STATISTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE for a CLOSED PRIMARY. Someone, I suspect the Governors Office, wa instructing polling places to allow INDEPENDENTS to vote.

This is wrong and we need to call the FLORIDA BOARD OF ELECTIONS to complain.

Being Patriotic isn't all
it's cracked up to be. Especially if you're John McCain.

Take for example, John McCain's portrayal as a patriotic American -- based on how he was held as a POW for 5 yrs or so and how he didn't completely crack under VC oppression.

Reality is: he survived. So did many other Americans.

As for patriotism -- it involves consistent, principled beliefs that are voluntary, even involuntary. Not to be confused with survival instincts. But that's another story .....

As for McCain, he may be principled, but he's hardly consistent. He's hardly a principled conservative. Take his voting record, for example.

And take for example, how McCain's staff met with John Kerry's staff to inquire if McCain could run as Kerry's VP against Bush.

Yep. Being patriotic isn't all it's cracked up to be. Especially if you're John McCain.

I Have Seen A Vision – In My Vision
I see a mean little troll who will lead a once proud institution named Reaganism into oblivion. I bid the new moderate left leaning Republican Party, adieu.

As I say my goodbye’s to you the new moderate Republican Party, I suggest that you say hello to your future. Say hello to the new language of your future, Spanish. Say hello to open borders and amnesty for law breakers. Say hello to tax payer funded health care. Say hello to US taxpayer’s funding of the cost’s related to fighting a war against an imaginary foe by the name of “Global Warming”. Say hello to a flood of mentally ill Jihadist’s crossing our open borders and filling our land with death and destruction. Say hello to massive tax increases. Say hello to the end of the global fight for freedom and liberty. Say hello to the free and open murder of tiny helpless babies.

You asked for it you got it! Say hello to President Barrack Hussein Obama the republican’s choice in 2008.

STOP MCCAIN Campaign Just Starting...
There are rumblings out there that the Conservative Leadership are planning to pull out all the stops to JUST STOP MCCAIN.

As it turns out, losing FL may be the best thing that ever happened to Romney.

If this causes Conservatives to WAKE UP and realize that if we don't do something, this RINO is gonna win, it may cause us to stop splitting our votes between Huck, Giuliani, Paul and Romney and just go with Romney.

We'll see.

Huckabee
All strong conservatives can now move toward Huckabee. He should win in Missouri and Georgia...plus a handful of others.

Amnesty Helps McCain?

McCain sweeps the Hispanic vote in Florida

HC-In the first Republican test of strength among Latino voters, Arizona Sen. John McCain won by a landslide.

Early exit polls cited by Fox News found that McCain was taking 50 percent of the Hispanic vote. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who campaigned long and hard in Miami’s Little Havana, was running second with 26 percent. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was a distant third at 16 percent, and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee rated little more than an asterisk at 5 percent.

About half of the Latino voters were Cuban-Americans, a traditional Republican voting bloc in the Sunshine state. Overall, Hispanics comprised one in ten of the GOP primary voters.

You got the usual Liberal suspects, the ones who come here to chatter, blather on about the faults of conservatism-----WHY?
Because their own party will not listen to their confusions, anxieties, dismay within their own feckless, pathetic party.
One thing I am certain of.
These libs who come here have surely tried their voice in dem circles, in some form or fashion, in their own cirlces, only to fall on deaf ears.
Wax on you pedantic Libs.
"Older and Fresher"
Yep, we get it all here.
But the democrass party floats on a rudderless boat, in a sea of conflated confusion. You got this LaboriousLawyer, who casually laments his own party's vaulting of Hillary Clinton----but states that he will vote for whomever gets the nod from the Maxine Waters' of the party.
His is a blissful reticence:
"Now if we can just convince the average Democrat to have enough common sense to send the Clintons packing....".
Not that he ever recognized the true nature of the Clinton's in the 1990's. Only now he has some vague notion that there is something wrong with the Clinton picture; he's not sure exactly what it is, but, something.
His is a singular focus--protect the courts:

"I will vote for whoever the Democrats nominate, mostly because of the courts."

Because in his little world, its not about the legislative process in bring about law---it's the courts who legislate.

Feckless little Libs, have no voice in their own party. So what's left, than to go on over to the other side of the aisle and chatter mindlessly about the failings of that group.

He said it perfectly this week while commenting about Obama (paraphrased):
"He's the newest candidate with the oldest of messages".

And, of course, that's where Pathetic Liberal gets his revelatory notion about,
"Older and Fresher".

Nothing substantive of the message Obama is dishing up. Only it is said eloquently, artfully, "freshly", in a very "old" message.

Obama and Clinton
Had Mr. Obama been anathema to "throwing dirt" in his exchange with Shrillary, he would not have even brought up the fact that she was on the boar of dir. of WalMart. But he is a participant in this-----simply a weak one.
The role Shrillary played is an old one-----way back in the archives----very old news.
What would have been far more resonant, in it's intent to "dig", would have been the following:

She rales on endlessly about BIG OIL. She loves to stir the pot on that subject, but wait, Hey, Billary, riddle me this one?

Who is your largest single contributor to your campaign? I'll just pause for a moment in wait of this answer..........waiting.........witing........waiting. Bzzzzzzzzzzzz, time's up.

The Saudis are indeed her largest contributor. At least $$$$10,000,000 ($10 million). So, she is vocal in her spew against the oil companies and oil interests----yet-----yeah, it don't square-----but that's okay, it's only fair when dems play this game.

By the way, Billary has made more money in speaking engagements, and the like, from the Saudis than any other source of revenue he's generated since leaving the white house in 2000. On top os hard cold cash, the Saudis have given him (2) two residences in their country. Yep, makes it easy for him to crash in his own pad while he's over their doing........well, bidness, you know what i mean. There are all kinds of opportunities brewing for him over there.

SO----the Billary's are deriving HUGE revenues from the Saudi's----but, Barack does not know enough to bring this up---he wants the folks to kow about her involvement with WalMart.

Hahahahahahahahahaha.

It's Not Over Until the Fat Lady Sings--
If you look at the polls, Romney came from 12% to over 30% in just 9 days! While he lost the total vote, had this not been a winner take all state, he would have still been ahead in delegates. The loss in Florida may be a blessing is disguise because it should unite the conservatives to unite around Romney. If they do, McCain will be out the door.

If McCain wins, many will not vote for him but stay home or vote for Obama. The reason is that they don't want to put a man into office who has disguised himself as a Democrat.....this would have long lasting, devastating implications for the Republicans in the future.

We need to get off our butts and have the conservatives come together to defeat McCain on Tuesday the 5th. Vote Romney.

Romney Makes Enemies, McCain Alliances
Saddling up to the caustic-cons, namely Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, Mark "Wannabe" Levin, etc, has gotten Romney nowhere. It has made him lots of enemies however as he imitated their sarcastic and agrressive styles in his campaign.

In the meantime Mac befriends the folks Romney turns off, such as Huck, Rudy, Fred Thompson, Crist, Martinez, etc, etc.

So now watch Romney, as super Tuesday approaches, go further into the negative world of implying only folks in the "business world" have had real jobs, that all politicians in Washington need to leave, etc, etc. He has now alienated even the White House.

Romney may have a future making weather vanes fashioned after his likeness. Huckabee will become the number one radio talk show host in America and will often feature his friend, President John McCain on his show.

Not to rain on the bread and circuses,
but the country is bankrupt. When the net present value of future entitlement obligations is presented according to generally accepted accounting principles, the annual deficit runs in the trillions. McCain's platform of perpetual warfare and welfare (implicit in granting amnesty to tens of millions of Third Worlders who manifest a cultural antipathy toward education and forbearance) simply ain't gonna happen. Were Russia and the Arabs to leverage their collective resource wealth and military might into a regional, asset-backed currency, the dollar could easily collapse on the American middle class. Or were China and Japan to tire of losing 10% purchasing power per annum on their trillions of dollars of reserves . . . the scenarios are real, many and immediate.

Personal pecuniary prowess notwithstanding, Mitt would not transform government into a producer of goods and circuses; his private sector experience is thus of little relevance. And he has shown disheartening Keynesian predilections in responding to the Bush stimulus and in promising to put MI auto on the dole. He seems committed to the same debase-and-accrue policies that are plundering the working class and gutting our manufacturing base.

Ron Paul, Ron Paul, Ron Paul. He so perfectly fits the cri de coeur of many posters on this thread. He has dedicated his honorable, consistent political career to choking off the leviathan’s blood supply—The Federal Reserve, the income tax and legal tender laws—and thereby returning control of America’s destiny to the peaceful, productive citizen. Shame on us for blinding ourselves to the opportunity this man presents.

McCain supporters dream
McCain into something he is not. So dream on. He is a fluke of multiple candidates splitting up the early voting. The incompetence of the Republican establishment is remarkable to put up worse than a Bob Dole. But they have managed to do that to appeal to the truly liberal people of the party.

If he is the candidate you want, how fun to watch this feeble, ill tempered man, which he has been able to hide with his "I used to steal drugs for my drug habit" wife and his cronies constantly around him, get destroyed by the Clintons or Mr. "young" and positive Obama.

The even match up mantra that is spouted about a race between the Clintons and McCain is too funny for words.

All this because you lefties want open borders and to keep sending troops to the Middle East for a hundred years (a McCain typical statement)?

I hope Republicans come to their senses, but if not, there is will be no difference in the two parties' candidates, what is the point of voting in the general.

Don't worry, the talk show radio guys would still vote for McCain, but regular people will probably develop a good case of apathy, and you might miss the votes of the conservative base you McCain supporters despise so much.

NO, NO, NO - A THOUSAND TIMES NO!!
Sorry! But I will NOT pull the lever for John McCain. It is one thing for the Dems to poke us in the eye but "one of our own" who over and over does it does not deserve our vote. If Hilary wins, she will be a one term president. We survived Jimmy Carter - although there are still things reverberating from his administration. If Obama gets the nod, the country will see a young, vigorous man against an angry old man who is not our future but our past. I refuse to encourage that!!

You Gotta Vote

Please do NOT stay home. You must vote. You do not have to vote for Hillybama or McAmnesty. There are always other parties and people on the ballot. You could write in Joe Oliva. The important votes are for House and Senate seats. Conservatives MUST win seats in the House. The House is where things get done. It was the passage of H.R. 4437 in Dec.05 that sparked the illegal alien protest marches and moved this issue to the front burner. It was the Senate that tried to jam amnesty down our throats. The D's that won seats in '06 were conservatives running on enforcement platforms. One of them, Heath Shuler D-NC, introduced the SAVE Act. Call, e-mail, or write your Congressman and urge support of this legislation. Enforcement is what Americans want, not amnesty.

I don't think Hillary is stupid enough to step in front of this bus. McCain is.

If in fact Rudy drops out, as a Rudy supporter, I can only hope that he will suppory Mitt Romney not only for the good of the country, but for the good of the party. As one of Rudy's Rockingham County Co-Chairman, I encourage him to not support John McCain. McCain has played a game with the voters, he never gives a straight answer on the most important issues, and I have no trust what so ever that he "got the message!". What he got, was I better not tell them the truth about what I really intend to do about imagration message, because he does and will support amnesty. I will never vote for McCain, even in
the general election. If you beleive in conservatism and think that liberal policies will always fail, then voting for a liberal Republican is voting for failure and tying the failure to the Republican Party. I won't do that just to feel good that there is a Republican in the White House. If I'm going to get stuck with a liberal president, I am better off trying to influence future Congressional races as voters look for something to counter-balance liberal democrat control of all three branches of the federal government.

McCain-Liberman
It's not just a wacked bill-It's a political ticket.

McCain is clearly a weak conservative who has shown his "Maverick" bone fides enough in the last 7 years that this should be a no brainer. McCain will pick Liberman to steal the independent votes from the Democrats. The calculus is not bad. He may actually pull it off and win the Presidency; but, it is at the cost of the conservative movement.

Traditional conservatism is slowly dying. People are bathed in a constant stream of liberalism in popular media, Television, Movies, Newsprint, Elementary Schools, etc. and it appears to be shifting the zeitgiest of the nation leftward.

Conservative ideas are more and more seen as old fashioned, behind-the-times, silly. Now the trendy beliefs that are catching on are all liberal. Whats cool?

Global Warming: Hey we've all recieved the indoctrination and now its time to implement the "save the whales" lessons that we were taught as youngsters;

Gay Marriage: The line here is- if two people love each other, then where is the harm? right? The harm is that it sends the subliminal message that traditional marriages have no special value to society. Its a slippery slope that logically leads to the idea that any type of marriage is OK. Polygamy then Polygynies of all kinds. What was is that cause Rome to fall?

I could go on and on, but I don't read the long posts, do you?

"Conservatism" is unique among worldly phenomena, in that it is one of the few things where older actually is "fresher." That you persist in mocking the notion that men of wisdom must draw from their store both old and new, and that, indeed, the old can be new, really speaks to your silliness. Your breach is not with me--it is with conservatism itself. And you are not the only on
