A Reminder of Why We Hate the Tax Code
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 3:54 PM
From my buddy Dan Mitchell, who does these free-market videos for the Center for Freedom and Prosperity. Today, he takes on the debate between fair-taxers and flat-taxers, and why we should all just get along:

Flat Tax all the way......
And the Congress does not have the ability to raise the tax amount without submitting the request to the citizens by way of a vote.

Also, our government should be starved.....they have overspent, ignored problems facing Social Security and Medicare and propose more social programs.

If a family did this - over spent, ignored their dependents, failed to provide care, the parents would face losing their children and potentially jail. Maybe the same is true of our elected officials.........send the long term career politicians home so they can look for a real job. I am tired of working hard to pay them over $150,000 a year to show up for a few months of so called work!

What about the no taxers?
It's time to end the theft that is taxation once and for all. And it's time to start dismantling governments. All of them. Everywhere.

No government. Know peace.

Can't we all just get along? Nope.
If only the goals of the flat-taxers and the fair-taxers truly were the same, we could get along. It's my unscientific, outside-the-Beltway sense that the flat-taxers are more of the "starve government" type than the fair-taxers, while the latter are the "just get government out of my sight until I need it" type.

The real problem is the fact that most of us don't write a separate check to the government for taxes; instead, we have it nibbled away from the paycheck and at the cash register in mostly-unnoticed bites (personal note; I get to write between 8 and 10 checks a year depending on how well I guesstimate my liability). That's something not exactly addressed in either proposal. Indeed, it can't be addressed in a sales-tax scheme because the tax is built into the cost of the items taxed, and unless one is buying a truly big-ticket item, it's not exactly painful. Similarily, income-tax withholding, and especially the default behavior of taking too much out so that April 15 is not seen as a day of paying but a day of getting paid, brought that lack of pain to the income tax, just as it was designed to do.

It's far easier to increase taxation when the populace is not truly aware of just how bad it is.
