Republican questions vs Democrat questions

Republicans vs Democrats

The folks at CNN and YouTube certainly matured in their presentation of their groundbreaking debate format since July but I can't help but think it's a Republican vs. Democrat thing.   The questions, videos, and the candidates' responses were less goofy, less gimicky, more intelligent and relevant this time around -- And the debate was both enjoyable and informative in a way the Democrat debate wasn't.

Good
This was a pretty good debate. The professional politicians were in their element. Rudy, McCain, Huckabee, Hunter, Tancredo were pretty smooth.

Fred had a good night. I for the most part like Fred.

Romney had some great moments and some answers that obviously were not sound bites. He seemed unscripted on religion, torture and guns. I definitely would not call him plastic. On balance it was a good night for Romney because he got a great headline of him and Rudy on immigration. He also got a great exchange with Huck on immigration. A lot of time focused on immigration. That is the topic Romney wants to own right now.

Whenever Romney gets a question that he is not sure how to answer he says, "I will listen" "I will gather expert opinion", etc. That approach is not great in a live debate. It appears too cautious. Others take very decisive and to some extent divisive positions. However, in this year of change politics it would make a great commercial. The voters are very frustrated and feel that they are not being listened to.

"I will listen" should become a national campaign theme for Romney. However, in the give and take of a debate Romney needs to be more decisive on some of these issues.

Romney's answer on the Bible was good the delivery was awkward. It helps him anytime he says he reads the Bible and believes it. He also mentioned that he may interpret it differently and that cut the Evangelicals some slack. Huckabee actually bailed everyone out by indicating that the every word should not be taken literally.
