Gun Rights Mean Self Defense- Or Nothing
Posted by: Michael Medved at 9:22 AM
The logic of the Supreme Court decision on gun rights is simple and unassailable. Yes, the Second Amendment establishes an individual’s right “to keep and bear arms,” the court decided. And this right means nothing, if it doesn’t guarantee the individual’s ability to possess a firearm in his own home for the purposes of self-defense. The Washington D.C. handgun ban made it impossible for a private citizen to own a hand-gun at home, and regulated the storage of rifles in such a way that they could never help with self-defense. It therefore took away the individual’s right “to keep and bear arms.” Senator Obama’s position—that he supports gun bans like Washington’s, but also believes there’s a constitutional right for private gun ownership – has been praised by the media as “nuanced” but counts as almost laughably contradictory. If there is a Second Amendment right to firearms, but it doesn’t protect a right for law-abiding citizens to keep guns in their own homes for self defense, then what, exactly does it guarantee? Don’t expect Obama to provide a meaningful answer to that question.

As a pro second amendment guy, I have to tell you that what you say is nonsense. You have the right to own anything the military owns? Really? So you would have no problem with someone in the next town owning a 14 inch artillary piece that can toss a five hundred pound high explosive projectile twenty miles?

And would you really be ok with someone owning a small nuke, provided they were able to make one? Because I can deal with the possibility that some wack job might walk into a mall and shoot a bunch of people. That will happen regardless of what the gun laws are and I do not think it justifies taking away our freedom to own or carry a firearm. But a crazy man with a small nuke can wipe a good sized town off the map and kill a good 80 or 90 thousand...at least. If you find that a risk that is worth taking, then you clearly love "freedom" far more than I do.

I love freedom, but it should not be no holds barred. Where it regards nukes and massively powerful weapons that can destroy whole city blocks, I do not think any individual should be trusted to have them. And that includes me. Sure I know I would never use such a weapon, but do you know it?

"The real definition of the Second Amendment gives me the right to own any weapon used by our military, or it has no meaning at all".

Very true!

Also I would like to believe that our own military would side with the people of America rather then take orders from a future president and government that is out of control.

This decision was bogus, don't be fooled
The Second Amendment was far more than self-defense! It was the basis by which the people could stay free by throwing off a tyrannical government.

By stating we can defend ourselves, the elites have once again duped us. How could the people fight off a tyrannical government that has night vision, helicopters, machine guns, and other sophisticated weaponry.

The real definition of the Second Amendment gives me the right to own any weapon used by our military, or it has no meaning at all.

I am RIGHT writes: Monday, June, 30, 2008 8:42 AM
THE RIGHT ABOVE ALL
The second amendment is in the Bill of Rights to defend all the other rights from a tyrannical government.

The second amendment is critical for a free country. A person is not free... if they are not free to defend themselves.

Obama is not smart enough or could care less to understand this very important fact.
Joe writes: Sunday, June, 29, 2008 11:39 AM
The logic is undeniable...
The federal government has no business banning handguns. I agree with Scalia the right is not unlimited (I think most of us would agree that private ownership of a nuclear missile can be regulated and prohibited) and of course keeping guns out of hands of felons, the mentally ill, and certain federal properties are reasonable restrictions.

But where Heller really makes a difference is suggesting very strongly that the 14th Amendment incorporated this right to the states. That means NYC's blanket prohibition against handguns will likely fall. Good. It was an insane law, only allowing criminals to have guns and not law abiding citizens.

Summing it up...
Thomas Sowell wrote (quite some time ago):

Like virtually every other liberal crusade, gun control is based on the assumption that other people lack common sense and must be controlled by the superior wisdom and virtue of the annoited."

Pretty much says it all...
Apollyon67 writes: Sunday, June, 29, 2008 12:38 AM
When
Obama actually repeals all the illegal gun laws in his own state, I will give him the chance to do the same for my Country.

Our Rights and Freedoms
Most people seem to forget that the dem pinko anti second amendment crusade has absolutely NOTHING to do with guns any more than the tax hikes have nothing to do with money and that socialized medicine has nothing to do with health. It has everything to do with power. The less guns we have and the more of our money they have the more we will come to depend on this "Government". The lib pinko commie marxists would like nothing more than us to be defenseless to a type of government that they are striving to attain. This country better wake up and soon. This country is long overdue for a good old fashioned revolution.

Nuanced must mean double-minded
After hearing all of the liberals and leftists (I know, it's redundant) talk about how they are "nuanced", I've reached the conclusion that the word "nuanced" must mean A) Lying about what you said in the past or B) Double-minded - that is holding two totally opposite views at the same time without your head exploding!

Seawolf writes: Saturday, June, 28, 2008 10:13 AM
Obama is a bald faced
liar when it comes to the 2nd amendment. He supported the Chicago handgun ban and sought to extend it to the entire state of Ill.
He sought the complete elimination of all handgun mfg in the country.

He says he supports our 2nd amendment rights, but then advocates "reasonable regulations".
What regulations is he talking about?
I'll believe him when he comes out for CCW permits to be valid in all 50 states like drivers licenses..that's truly backing our rights.
Ya gotta be nuts to even consider a vote for this marxist.

USSC?
The United States Sentencing Commission decided a court case? Talk about judicial activism! That's almost as scary as the thought that the United Nations has ANYTHING to do with our country's gun laws.
60's Boomer writes: Saturday, June, 28, 2008 12:27 AM
Only the beginning
Thursday's decision by the USSC does not end the debate. The far left Brady campaign and the United Nations will continue the assault on American's right of self defense and possesion of firearms. Stay Ready ... There's more to come.
fencerdad writes: Friday, June, 27, 2008 9:47 PM
Obama
can't answer the question. He wants to sit on the fence. After all, it's politically expedient. This gives us some insight into his character.

Cynical writes: Friday, June, 27, 2008 9:38 PM
The Priority Of Self Defense
I just wish these politicians (who are all protected by armed security) wouldn't be such self centered Poop Heads. The average citizen has as just as much right to live securely as any politician. Some Sheriffs are in the same category when it coomes to issuing CCW permits. They are so afraid a citizen won't get murdered so they can investigate under the scrutiny of the public news media.
Florida writes: Friday, June, 27, 2008 8:57 PM

Does Obama ever have a meaningful thing to say about anything? NOT, He is clueless! He even thinks he can provide a FAKE Birth Certificate and no one will notice..........Wake UP!

What type of spin are you going to put on THIS one? And will you defend it? Come on! Stand up for your right to respond to your detractors . . . and then DO IT.
Medhead writes: Friday, June, 27, 2008 8:14 PM
I agree Mr. Medved
The 2A also gurantees the right to legally carry a firearm or self defense, in your car or on your person.
MuscleDaddy writes: Friday, June, 27, 2008 2:26 PM
Don’t expect Obama ...
.... to provide a meaningful answer to that question?

What you mean "THAT" question?

Has he given any on other topics - you know, and stuck with them?

Don't Expect Anyone to Bring it Up
If Obama's campaign (and the willing media) gets it's way, he'll be a center-right moderate by November.
