As Predicted, National Review Endoses Romney

You heard it here first, almost a week ago.
Once again, my sources come through...
This also makes me wonder about K-Lo's email to me, six days ago. As you'll recall, she wrote:
yes, we're talking about possibly making an endorsement of someone in primary season, but nothing is decided.
So how long does it take to make an endorsement, and then print a magazine? (I guess I can't blame her for wanting to keep it quiet ...). Of course, National Review's endorsment isn't really a surprise. They've been very friendly to him throughout this campaign.

Does 'having the biggest personal wallet' = "the best candidate"?
How much $$ has Romney spent in Iowa?

How come Romney wasn't elected in 1994?
Taranto, James. 31 December 2005. "Latter-day President? A Mitt Romney candidacy would test the religious right." http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.html?id=110 007755 In 1994 he made his first political run, challenging Sen. Ted Kennedy. Even that year's Republican tide was not enough to drown Mr. Kennedy, who won 58% to 41%. Yet Mr. Romney's showing remains the best of any challenger Mr. Kennedy has faced.

They have put out the issues. The just happen to agree with the growing number of intelligent people that Romney is shaping up to be our best bet in 2008. |
|
I am sick of people telling us how we should vote. The NRO should be putting out the issues and letting voters make their choice. Mitt Romney has the connections and the big bucks and the establishment says such a candidate will get the nomination...but that is exactly what America needs to change; and change desperately. Judge a candidate by what he stands for and if you have confidence that he will be honest and keep his word and seek to do the right thing in the next 4 years.
I am sick of money bags and wall street running the life of the nation and ultimately my life in particular....
NRO can join the clan of biased media jockeys - both left and right; where they sink into that hole of oblivion! |
|
Well, you can but what would be the point? You would be wrong.
Well deserved Governor! The race is on! May the most capable conservative leader win, ROMNEY! |
|
Your prediction is stunning. Since reading NRO everyday for about a year I would say that Romney has had favorable coverage, but then again has been ripped many times. All the candidates have on that site. I wouldn't say the site is favorable to him, Geraghty is no fan...he rips and will say occasional pleasantries. Deroy Murdock thinks Romney is the devil himself and has published a few rip articles. Byron York, another Rudy guy has interviewed Romney recently trying to trip him up on his religion. Freddoso another Rudy guy hardly ever praises Romney. Other than K-Lo who does like Romney? Frum..uh..no..Podhertz? No way. Ramesh? He's a McCainite. I would still venture to say they're pro Rudy if anything, and like Geraghty already has...most of the bloggers will deny having agreed to that editorial.
But I will agree..Mitt would be a great candidate and it's at least refreshing to see NRO come out and say it and admit that the Rudy and Huck love fest truly pulls the party at both ends.
But..hey..as long as Matt predicted it. Is the sun coming up tomorrow Matt? |

They had some nice things to say about your "homie" McCain.
Unfortunately, McCain's record sort of got in the way of their endorsing him. That and running a horrible campaign.
Keep a stiff upper lip Matt. If you keep slamming Romney, maybe McCain will be within 10 points of him in NH. |
|
|
I would also add that Mitt has to win the nomination within a significantly smaller Republican party (25% of all registered voters?). He needs to shore up his conservative credentials among those of us conservatives who chose to re-register as unaffiliated independents. Duncan Hunter would do the trick and make Mitt stronger in CA as well as set up the presidency of Hunter in 2016. Sixteen years of Hunter would go a long way to undoing much of the damage inflicted on the GOP by the Bush clan. |

think endorsements were important if Huck were getting any. Oh, and he's not. |
|
Mitt is the best candidate in the field!! This is why the DNC attacks him the most!!
[DNC Press Release Attack Summary:
Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) – 37% (99 press releases) Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY) – 28% (74) Senator John McCain (R-AZ) – 24% (64) Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN) – 8% (20) Governor Mike Huckabee – 2% (4)]
The G.O.P. can't afford to nominate the aww shucks I'm just a goober candidate in a change election.
Go Mitt!! |
|
this has been the choice since he entered the race... they all go to the same parties.
(not a shock and no big deal) |
|
|
I think Romney's flaw is [if-when] he begins to assume the nomination, and begins to pick fellow "team" members. Could he? I think I know what it would look like if so. (and it could burn many on the right.) |
|
|
No endorsement will get him to the whitehouse. |
|
...Deroy Murdock is having one massive conniption fit right now.

Well, Matt, it sure sounds like you ARE blaming her for wanting to keep it quiet. Otherwise, you wouldn't be publicly 'wondering' about it at the Townhall blog. |

It's not a surprise. He IS the most electable Conservative.
I expect this will help his national numbers more than his IA numbers.
The interesting thing is that having given "the speech" and getting some of these key endorsements, coupled with Giuliani's collapse in the national polls, Romney doesn't have to springboard anymore. With Giuliani so vulnerable nationally, Mitt no longer has to win IA. He's starting to get within striking distance of Rudy nationally. |
