The Kerry Flap Keeps Flapping
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 10:13 AM

First I want to point out that the Washington Post front-paged this story today:

Scandals Alone Could Cost Republicans Their House Majority

But, according to Howard Kurtz, they didn't front-page the Kerry flap yesterday. Meanwhile, the NYT is straight-up lying to its readers about what Kerry said, and Hugh notes that only the NY Post ran the picture seen 'round the world.

More on the funny troops who delivered the best jab of the week on the Massachusetts Senator:

The picture was first revealed yesterday on the blog Web site of Milwaukee talk radio host Charlie Sykes, who said he got it from a listener who had a buddy in the unit.

The picture soon raced around the Internet, and it got much of the nation chuckling when it went up on Drudge Report later in the day.

Staff Sgt. Erik Holtan, a member of the Minnesota National Guard, says he saw the picture and recognized the insignia as that of his fellow Minnesota guardsmen - and he immediately put it up on his own blog site.

"It's awesome," he told The Post. "The troops over there have to be livid because of what [Kerry] said. I don't know why he would say that."

Holtan, who works at Guard headquarters, said he believes the troops behind the Kerry sign are in Iraq, since all the members of the unit in the shot - the 1/34 Brigade Troops Battalion - have been deployed.

There's still debate going on about whether Kerry meant to smear the troops. Michelle, for one, thinks he did. LaShawn says he didn't.

I watched the uncut tape last night, and it's really hard to tell what he meant, even with the context. My gut is that he may have mispoken and then just handled the response COMPLETELY wrong. It could go either way, and he fell victim to the fact that he's "mispoken" badly about the troops several times in the past, and that his "joke" or whatever it was about the dumb troops is a talking point for the anti-war Left. He also perpetuated the thing by fighting back, nutroots-style instead of owning up to what he'd done.

I know plenty of people on the Left who do have contempt for the troops. I know people who think serving is not a legitimate career choice, who think Army officers shouldn't be allowed to speak at career week in local schools. They do not make a secret of it, and to pretend as if it's "inconceivable" that Kerry would insult the troops while talking to a group of college-aged Californians seems silly to me. It wasn't inconceivable, which is why it became a story. Kerry has shown in the past that he carries around that kind of contempt regardless of the fact that he served. His statement, mistake or not, served to remind a whole bunch of people why they elected President Bush over him in '04, and by proxy why we should probably stick with Republicans now while troops are in danger overseas.

Now that he's apologized, though? I think the story's over, but the effects remain. The apology came too late, politically, and came probably 30 years too late for the troops, but they can decide whether he's forgiven. It feels like a bit of a stretch to keep this story alive until Election Day. It was undoubtedly a timely reminder, however, of why many regular Americans don't much care for the condescension of the Democratic Party.

The thing is...
Kerry won't see this as a mistake on his part. HE's so far removed from the real world, he'll never see it. His pride will only allow him to believe that his misfortune is a result of the right-wing (media and party) in this country persecuting him. Therefore, he will probably err again in a similar manner.
Brehon writes: Thursday, November, 02, 2006 11:23 AM
Kerry's point was the same
Whether he meant to call our troops a bunch of mental-midgets and societal rejects, or he intended to really say, "don't end up like our President," the effect is the same on our troops. His constant attacks on the war effort and ridiculing the actions of our troops is just as demoralizing.
David writes: Thursday, November, 02, 2006 11:35 AM
For me it's not over...
MKH, you're a bright, intelligent lady who often makes astute observations. But you and many other conservatives (such as Jonah Goldberg and Rick Moran) are too eager to declare this incident is "over."

As a Viet Nam era vet and the uncle of an Air Guard non-com who was deployed in Kosovo and Iraq, I cannot accept Kerry's so-called apology, and I think the same thing applies to most members of the military and veteran communities. He only apologized that we "misinterpreted" his "botched joke." He and many others don't understand that what he did was reveal what is in his heart and the the hearts of many in the Democrat leadership and drive by media.

I think we're going to see a backlash on this that helps keep Republicans in power in both the House and Senate. A lot of Democrats and Independents have friends and family in Iraq, and this could very well motivate them to vote GOP. As for the GOP base, not only are we returning, we're mad as hell!
David writes: Thursday, November, 02, 2006 11:40 AM
Oops, sorry!
Sorry, MKH. I just re-read your last paragraph. You do think the story might be over, but the effects could remain. I can grant you that might be the case, but I wouldn't be surprized if this story has enough legs to walk into next week.

Kerry --- The "elitist".
David- You are right. It's not over until we say it's over. He is an embarrasement to our country and himself. I was out of town and watched MKH on cnn last week. She seemed out of her league in the discussion. She let the guy totally dominate the alloted time. I am sorry MKH but you looked good. Your hair was fixed nice for the segment but next time fight for the air time or be overwhelmed again.

Kerry
One thing though becomes apparent-- If a conservative wants to be on CNN all they have to do is say something disparaging about a conservative.
Paul writes: Thursday, November, 02, 2006 12:13 PM
Some joke.
I think the context of where Kerry was when he said this should be taken into consideration. The purpose of his speech was to get these college kids to vote for his fellow Democrat in CA, a state where there's hostility toward military recruiters on its campuses. So, what better way to win them over than to make a dig at the intelligence of those who choose to server their country? He's telling those kids that they're smarter than those who are their age in the military, thus are smart enough to vote Democrat. He had to have known what he was saying.

I'm surprised that no one in the media hasn't condemned the "botched joke" excuse on the grounds that any joke that has Iraq in its punchline from a politician and would-be commander-in-chief, is just as bad as his calling those in the military "stupid" if not worse. Especially at the end of a month in which we lost a lot of brave people over there.

And, in his "apology" he doesn't apologize for his having said anything wrong, he's just sorry that it was "misinterpreted" which is just placing the blame on those he offended. Is it just me or is he calling the military dumb, again? After all, they're the ones who he offended because they weren't smart enough to know what he meant.

unsurprised
"I watched the uncut tape last night, and it's really hard to tell what he meant, even with the context."

You're saying it was a typical Kerry speech, then?

the banner is even in Egypt
The picture of the troops and their funny banner is even in Egypt ! Check out BigPharaoh.com And keep reading for the sad story about women IN veils getting attacked in Cairo. The veil is NO protection as we are learning in Saudia Arabia and Egypt. And there are already t-shirts mocking the Australian mullah who compares women without veils to meat left out. Saw the link on Tim Blair's blog. And thank you Tim Blair for reporting what OUR Vice-President said about Kerry. Too funny

Kerry Uncut
I saw the uncut version too. I think the discussion of whether he meant to say what he said or whether he meant something other than what he said misses the point that he tried to hide behind. He says he blew the joke? What, he couldn't read his own notes? He lost his train of thought 90 seconds into his remarks? If that's the case, he should be the last person in the world to suggest that W is the one who is stupid. Glass houses Lurch.
Gary writes: Thursday, November, 02, 2006 1:41 PM
some joke
So Paul-- do I understand you correctly that you feel it's just find to say anything based on the crowd you are speaking to? In other words, only preach to the choir. Never let them know what you really are or what you believe. Just pander to the audience. That definitely is what Kerry usually do any way. That may have been how he got caught. Thank goodness one lonely conservative say this video clip and made it known to all of us. The MSM isn't covering it and putting up headlines to support the dems and carrying the dems water for them and trying to kill this Kerry blunder.

WHAT ABOUT BARBARA BOXER????
Since Senator Barbara Boxer physically stood next to John Kerry as he said the derogatory comments about our troops, why hasn't she been taken to task?????

How does she feel about what he said?

Did she gasp or giggle when Monseur Kerry "joked" about our troops?

Did she speak before or after Kerry?

What did she say to the Pasadena City College group?

extra credit:

What about LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who also spoke?

Good question sg. Be interesting to hear her comments about the kerry screw up or fruedian slip.

some joke.
Gary, I'm not saying it's fine, I'm condemning it. I was just pointing out that the crowd he was speaking to and his comments show that it wasn't a botched joke, it was deliberate pandering to an anti-military crowd. But I believe that is really how he feels toward the military, since it's not the first time he's bashed them.

Maybe he should have told them that if they don't do well in shcool, they could get stuck in the Senate for life and live off their rich wives' fortune.
Gipper writes: Thursday, November, 02, 2006 6:49 PM
Cheney responds
"Of course, now Senator Kerry says he was just making a joke, and he botched it up. I guess we didn’t get the nuance. He was for the joke before he was against it."
