Another Debate?
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 10:00 PM
I can barely contain my excitement.

So far, McCain has looked strong and benefited greatly from the discussion of the Surge and Iran, and the larger war. I thought he could have smacked Paul a little harder.

Mitt had a good line about Paul reading Ahmadinejad press releases.

Paul's kooky, Thompson's a little rambly at times but strong at his truth-squad act when he can keep my attention, and always gets off a few good lines. Huckabee's decent, as usual, but continues not to project strength, particularly on foreign policy. He just sounds too nicey-nice, and I'm wondering how that plays in South Carolina.

Paul's response to his electability

Paul had a kooky response to the Iranian threat, but he did highlight how far the Republican party has come in terms of spending.

McCain represents the Illegals

McCain is the problem,
HE represented the illegals against the USA
citizens

NOW he wants to represent the USA citizens

GO BE PRESIDENT OF MEXICO

Solid Fred
Tonight, he seems to be engaging more and giving those jabs when needed. He also is backing up his answers with his record. Sometimes the proof is in the pudding not the merginue.

Ron Paul
Seems to be somewhat naive about the threat from Iran in the fact that he doesn't believe there is a threat. That is scary...

HUCK running for Preacher in Chief

Huckabee wants to be Preacher in Chief
Comedian in Chief
Welfare director in Chief
Tax collecter in Chief

NOTE: this country is not 100% evangelicals
or fundamentalists

HUCKABEE is a Liberal bigot in a Preacher's cloak

Fred is showing true leadership
Fred Thompson has really stepped up tonight in showing conservative leadership and resolve, while it appears to others are pandering and appearing weak. Fred is at a different level than the other candidates. He changed my vote from huckabee, who appears weak and afraid, to thompson who shows what a conservative leader looks like.
Wayfinder writes: Thursday, January, 10, 2008 10:33 PM
Poor Paul
Poor Ron Paul. He just doesn't get it. It's not that he has a conservative stance on things, and on some issues he does. It's just he's a loon. His premise on American foreign policy is childish and makes him look like an imbecile.

Kudos to Fox News, Townhall and SC!
This was the best debate yet! Thanks to Fox News, Townhall and SC!

The bell means "stop talking!"
I can't stand these candidates that continue to talk long after the "time's up" bell sounds. The bell means you have to stop talking! I like Rudy, but in his closing, it felt like he kept talking for 15 to 45 seconds after the bell sounded.

Fred's night
When John Podhoretz, who is about as far from a Fredhead as they come on the Right, says Fred is having the most commanding performance of any candidate in this election cycle, you know he's had a good night. Unfortunately what I see playing out is a McCain/Thompson ticket, but that would at least soften the blow of McCain getting the nomination.

Which Candidate has it all???
I wish we as voters could have a candidate with Ron Paul's fiscal policy, Fred Thompson's eithical beliefs, and Rudy Juliani's ability to be articulate, and Mitt Romney's views on change. They all have a bit of what we need, WHO HAS IT ALL????
Aaron writes: Thursday, January, 10, 2008 10:55 PM
Fred's night, but will it help him?
Thompson was honest, informed, and right on, as usual. I joked to a relative that he's the closest candidate this country will ever see to John Wayne. ;)

Unfortunately, intelligence and honesty don't get people elected. Charisma gets people elected. Fred's humorous, but too stoic and low-key to beat the other candidates. I'm praying he'll get picked up as someone VP.

The Constitution is kooky?
Look how far the Republican Party and the conservative movement has come. It is now kooky to support the Constitution. Don't believe me. Check Ron Paul's voting record.

Summary of the Night
It feels like 6 months since Fred and Rudy were last seen. I guess since they skipped out on Iowa, Wyoming or New Hampshire they became non-entities.

Fred still comes off as a sleepy hound dog to me. I'm interested in seeing how he campaigns on 3 hours sleep every night for the rest of the month. Can he do it? TV debates aren't going to win SC. You gotta get out there and work it hard like Bush did after he lost NH in 2000.

I thought McCain and Romney performed the same as always. Nothing special.

Rudy kept staying one question behind. He always wanted to comment on the question asked moments earlier, then he'd rush into whatever the current question posed to him was. He didn't say anything new I thought.

Huck did average. He had some good one liners, though not as witty as usual. Will his shakey moments hurt his introduction to the SC voters?

Poor Ron Paul is getting too much hate. But honestly -- he doesn't loose anything and he doesn't gain anything. He's got he supporters he's got. They're in perfect lock step with his positions. In Iowa he got 10% of the vote. In NH he got 8%. Don't be surprised if he continues to get 6-10% in many of these states. But I must commend his honesty, he probably knows that he's saying things the majority of the modern GOP doesn't care about anymore.

The Gates of Hell?
"Huckabee's decent, as usual, but continues not to project strength, particularly on foreign policy."

Huck's line about the Gates of Hell wasn't strong enough for you?
ReagenMan writes: Friday, January, 11, 2008 12:13 AM
My take on the night
So let's see about McCain's resume on leadership and running things. He led a flight squadron and a committee. Whoopedee damn doo. What a joke. Being a POW does not qualify him to be POTUS. And getting yourself shot down doesn't make you a hero either. He is brave. No one can take that away from him and I admire him greatly for that. But 'hero'? I don't see it.

Oh, I forgot, he also led the biggest failure of attempted legislation called McCain -Kennedy. And then blamed the american people again for not wanting it. He said we don't trust the government to enforce the laws? Well, who has been in the damn government not enforcing them? McCain! He continues to show contempt for the American people. If he really believed what he says now about enforcement first, why didn't he say anything about the recent legislation that gutted monies for the border fence? Straight talk? Try Liar.

His leadership is nothing compared to a running a state, a company or a project as big as an Olympics. McCain also came off as petty when he argued with Rudy over who supported the surge.

And Huck is just plain in over his head. He has no depth. One liners are cute but engage him is a serious talk about issues like government spending and he shows how clueless he is.

FoxNews is now justified keeping Ron paul off the stage in NH.

Some combination of Romney and Thompson would be by far the best ticket ever!

McCain wins it
McCain-1, Thompson-2, Huckabee-3

McCain was very strong tonight. I disagree with you Mary Katharine that he should have smacked Paul down more tonight. I felt sorry for Ron Paul, he was like a sad cross between a crazy Ross Perot and a lost General Stockdale (the general just didn't know who he was - Ron just couldn't hear anything but kept talking anyway) I think McCain did right thing by not taking shots at the retard - may have a negative effect of people feeling sorry for him like they did with Hillary when she cried (I am still not convinced those tears were not fake). I was starting to like Huckabee a little more, but did anyone have a problem when he said "Arkansas never had a bridge collapse while he was governor" I hope he didn't count on winning Minnesota in the primary or general election if applicable - what a cheap shot to take at a state where such an unfortunate tradegy happened

Ron Paul
For all the dumb kids here, including the dumb bimbo Mary Katherine Ham, Ron Paul's foreign policy comes from the finest traditions of old school Republicanism. It's refreshing to hear someone bring up Robert Taft, Mr REPULICAN

Anyway, one trillion dollars later why did we invade Iraq again?? No WMDs, no link to Osama, oil was trading at 27 dollars, now it's 100, the dollar is declining, stock market in the tank, housing bubble etc etc all while the boomers start retirning in mass in the next couple of years. Islamo Fascism. Wait a minute, Saddam Hussein was a secularist. He killled Islamic nutballs. Anyone remember the Iran Iraq war?? Iraq had the second largest Christian population in the region behind Lebanon. Now they're either dead of have fled. His long time foreign secretary Tariq Aziz is a Catholic. I'm not saying Saddam Hussein was a good guy, he wasn't, but he acted as a check against the Iranians.

This war has been a disaster for the countdry and for limited government conservatives. The WELFARE WARFARE STATE go hand in hand together.

Fred the only consistent conservative
All the others have reversed position from what they were saying and doing before the campaign. Fred's not a pretty face, but he's the only one who's right on all the important issues.

Now about his VP- say, Hunter, Michael Steele, J.C. Watts. And Ollie North for Sec Def!

Go Fred!
