Matt Lewis says that socialism is un-American because the Constitution extols freedom and democracy. He's confusing political and economic systems. The Constitution nowhere mandates an economic system. Democratic socialism and its cousin, social democracy, are entirely constitutional.
They are both the logical extensions of the democratic process. Indeed, so are the reins on government from the right when voters want to curb the excesses and mistakes and scandals of leftist officeholders.
Lewis has no business being a political commentator with such an ignorant point of view. The reason that a charge of socialism is so loaded is because people like Matt successfully misinform so many Americans. |
