McCain's Move: 4 Different Debate Scenarios
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 2:50 PM

It looks like Obama has firmly declared he will be at the debate, while McCain has allowed a little wiggle room by "requesting" the debate be postponed -- and "challenging" Obama to agree.

Regardless, this "staring contest" over whether or not to debate tomorrow night, could have real political ramifications.  McCain's opening salvo was shrewd and bold, but Obama's comeback was good, too ("Part of the president's job is to deal with more than one thing at once.")

Following are some thoughts on how McCain might respond to Obama's insistence on continuing with the debate:

1.  McCain could still show up.  If the compromise deal gets worked out in time, McCain could show up at the debate a victor, having slayed the economic dragon, and having gained the moral high ground, as well.  ... Even if the deal isn't signed, McCain could still show up -- and ask to focus on the economy (though the debate is supposed to be about foreign policy).

2.  McCain could skip it.  McCain says he won't debate unless there is a deal.  Pictures of McCain doing real work on the economy at 9 PM on a Friday night (I don't know, he and Lindsay Graham sitting around a boardroom table with a calculator??)  juxtaposed with pictures of Obama at a debate might make McCain look serious (and, conversely, make Obama look political).  Of course, absent those images, this could also backfire.

Don't discount the fact that skipping the debate opens McCain up to criticism that he cost Ole Miss money and prestige.  But more importantly, skipping the debate might give Obama a large forum all to himself (granted, few real Americans watch debates on Friday nights -- but this would allow pundits to speculate for days that McCain blew it by not showing up ...)

3.  McCain could make a last-minute arrival.  Showing up just as the debate begins -- if it comes on the heels of a major bi-partisan compromise or breakthrough -- would be a dramatic entrance, indeed.  This could work well, or it also might also be perceived as being too cute by half...

4.  McCain could send Palin.  (I mentioned this last night).   Obama would be in a "no-win" situation, in my view.  If he refused to debate her, that would be patronizing.  But if he did debate her, he would essentially be conceding that they are at the same level.  McCain could then argue that in the real world, a vice president steps in to handle political things when a leader is working on real policy ...

What are your predictions???

#1 or #4
I love the idea of JMac getting the negotiations done although B.O. is trying to just sign that sad bill and have it done.

JMac could get it done and say - this is one of the 10% times that I voted against Bush and had to persuade B.O. to vote against Bush again.

If that doesn't happen - I wouldn't mind #4. I think that Sarah Palin will be good in a debate against the messiah.
Acosta writes: Friday, September, 26, 2008 7:54 AM
Debate Options
To paraphrase Bill Clinton, (I'll wash my mouth later) McCain will not be hurt by not going to the debate, since after all McCain has been asking Obama to have weekly debates at town hall meetings, where the American people will be the ones asking the questions and Obama has refused.
If a solution is not in place by Friday, sending Sara would be masterful, and in tune with the OODA that we have been reading about.
For the record: My money is on Sara, she showed at the convention, that she did not need a teleprompter.
J writes: Friday, September, 26, 2008 7:18 AM
debate
McCain is prepared for the debate. They both should communicate and delegate their intentions to the bill, fly to the debate this afternoon and fly back tomorrow morning to continue the debate.

Its not getting resolved tonight.

Of course this throws BHO off his game plan of rehearsing 3 days in preparation of the debate. At least they will be on equal footing.

If they do debate, we will see a repeat of the meeting with the minister in august......"thats above my pay grade...ummmmm....uhhhh....I think, uhhhh......hang on a second people....uhhhhh....."

Brilliant move forthcoming
JMac (I like that moniker!) is going to come out shiny on this one however it goes down. I love the idea of Governor Palin showing up. That seems fitting since it seems all of Obama's supporters want to compare him to Palin instead of McCain anyway. I wonder why they never mention Biden?

Predictions
1 -- Sarah goes in his place! Please, please, please! --
2 -- He picks up the tab for all the expenses if he does not appear --
3 -- He debates and knocks the socks off Obama who at this moment still has no clue as to what JMac is gonna do! --

Hussein Vs. Palin, Governor Wins!
It would be a GREAT move on McCain's part. If the debate committee refuses to change subjects from foreign policy to economics (as McCain may request) then he can argue his foreign policy credentials are known to the american people and Sarah Palin can represent him at the debate. Is that why she met with a world leader this week? That would be AWESOME! The empty suit would finally have to meet and deal with baraccuda and he would be beaten by a gal wearing skirt, steletos and oh yeah - smiles (you know that smile Sarah wears?). Governor Palin took a shot at Obama when being interviewed by Couric so that could be a real opportunity (mayor meet community organizer:)....SWEEEEET!

I am a 75 year old women, I have a full time job, I run 3 miles a day, I have out lived 2 husbands, and I have 3 grand children that live with me. They are ages 3, 5, 6.

So if you are implying that people you call old are unable to contribute to the world, you are mistaken.

I would rather have McCain for a year, than have that slick, popus, elite, clueless Obama for 4 years. History proves more would get done.

I also am a 50 year member to the NRA!

That would be awesome and surely bring in Friday night viewers. Super Sarah could be exposed if it stays on foreign policy but no more or less than Barack Otrauma.

"King" Liberal
I did hear about Joe Biden's interview with Katie Couric. He talked about how President Roosevelt went on national television to address the stock market crash in 1929. However, there were a couple of problems:

1. Roosevelt wasn't president in 1929.
2. National television was non-existent.

I don't see how Sarah Palin's interview could have been any worse than that.
al bear writes: Thursday, September, 25, 2008 4:16 PM
McCain Debates?
Of course if a deal is close to done, McCain will decide to do the debate. But, he won't SAY it right away. He's already proven how easy it is to get in Obama's head. Let the man wonder.
Now the perfect thing is to come a little late, and say with a cheery grin: "Sorry I'm a little rumpled. Got stuck at work." It's funny, disarming and reminds the world that McCain went to work while Obama wanted to sit it out. It's also something every working stiff out there can relate to. Only Democrats and Washington insiders would consider going home to do your job a "stunt."

I actually thought of the sending Sarah idea. Here's a couple other reasons it'd be brilliant. First off the Presidential Commission probably wouldn't allow Obama to formally debate Palin, ergo, no worries about her not holding up to 90 minutes of foreign policy questions. The debate folks would have to either cancel or wing it...and Obama doesn't exactly like being spontaneous.
The other thing is McCain sending Palin would send a message to our enemies. You can never be sure what a President McCain is going to do.

It doesn't pay for me to be bored at work.

Okay 2 things.

1. Has anyone besides KL seen the Palin/Curic interview? If so how did it really go?

2. I'm bored at work, this is for you Rashum.......

Fade in.

Scene is of a basement apartment strewn with old pizza boxes, Red Bull cans and piles of dirty clothes. The only light comes from a computer monitor from an old desk that still has Power Rangers stickers all over it. At the keyboard of the computer is a white male, late teen years, dark hair, thin, nervous, pale, he has obviously been drink too many energy drinks and spending too much time in the basement. He still has his Subway uniform on as he just came back from his noon shift. He clicks around a site, reads several posts feverishly, then starts to pound out a message…

“Screwtape. LIAR! LIAR! Just like a repug to lie like that! LIAR! ‘We’ don’t talk to liars! Good day sir!

He enters the message and is about to start a new one when a voice comes from off scene, it is his mother. “Come along, dear! You have a dental appointment at 4:30!”

“Coming, Mom!” he calls. He pulls off the Subway jacket, grabs his hoodie from a pile of doubtfully clean clothes, take a can of Red Bull from a mini-fridge and runs out of the scene

Fade out.

Stay home and nurse your brain, McCain
Your droopy right eye is obvious evidence that you suffered a mini-stroke in the last couple of days. That's the real reason for suspending the campaign and avoiding the debates. Stay home with a warm cup of chocolate and send Sarah Palin to the debates. Maybe that crazy pastor of hers can help purge the evil witchcraft that is causing your campaign to crash and burn.
Theophilus writes: Thursday, September, 25, 2008 3:55 PM
Palin-Obama Debate Not Likely
1 - The McCain camp hinted that they wanted to possibly postpone next week's VP debate.

2 - Lord Obama would never agree to debate Palin. She is simply another bitter clinger to him, below his paygrade.

3 - Foreign Policy is neither her strong suit nor Lord Obama's. McCain wants to public demonstrate the contrast between himself and Barry on this one.

4 - Not enough time to prep. Although Palin probably would do a decent job against Barack "Empty Suit" Obama on foreign policy (Anyone who doubts should simply review the Obama-O'Reilly interview on Foxnews to see this was the worst subject of the interview of Obama).

McCains' Possible Retort
Whatever choice Senator McCain makes, one retort to Obama's snide remark that a "President's job is to deal with more than one thing at once," could be that "Presidents also need to know how to prioritize responsibilities requiring their attention, often needing to choose which responsibility demands immediate attention and which ones can wait a few hours."
Kathleen writes: Thursday, September, 25, 2008 3:48 PM
Get the Agreement Right & Send Palin
McCain should focus on the priority and his #1 duty and make sure this agreement works to protect the economy, does not encourage further irresponsible loans, and protects the tax payers. We cannot trust the Dems on this as they have repeatedly refused to address this problem for years, despite repeated warnings of a looming crisis. We need McCain to make sure the taxpayers are protected.

Palin can handle the debate and fill-in. She will do a great job! On top of that, McCain can also offer an ADDITIONAL townhall debate with Obama.

Because her garbled, incoherent and embarrassing interview with a lite weight like Couric shows exactly why McCain wants to delay the debates.

Video Conference In
I would video conference in, so that after McCain is done for the day, doing the job that both are still drawing a check from. Then McCain can destroy Obama, and still be doing his elected duties.
Theophilus writes: Thursday, September, 25, 2008 3:28 PM
Win-Win For McCain
#1 - Attend Debate (Win) or #2 - Skip debate and Solve Crisis (Super-Win)

If McCain shows up it will be a win, since he is already showing leadership and courage and foreign policy is his perceived (and actual) strength.

If McCain does not show up and Congress is able to reach a decent solution, then it will be a Super-Win.

Even former Predient Clinton believes that McCain made this move in good faith.

Added to this is that President Bush requested a meeting with McCain and Obama in D.C. today, which shows that McCain made a very reasonable move to turn his full attention to this.
Joe writes: Thursday, September, 25, 2008 3:28 PM
Now that a deal seems likely
...it makes sense for McCain to show. There should be some questions about the economy and the deal since arguably it is an issue that impacts national security. McCain should not crow about his stance, he should explain it. Why was his presence required? It actually was, because Republicans needed cover because Bush is going to be out in January regardless on how things go. Dems needed cover from McCain too (Harry Reid flipped on that issue, but he said as much the day before. Hence the reason Bill Clinton admitted as much today).

Mac also needs to explain why Obama and the Dems have responsibility for the Fannie and Freddie mess. That is something Mac has not done.
LLR writes: Thursday, September, 25, 2008 3:26 PM

#4 is the actually smartest option if there is still a logjam on Friday. Though I worry that it's too crazy even for even "the maverick" to try.

Of course, if the current reports of a deal having been made are true, the debate could just go on as scheduled with a bailout already in place.
righty64 writes: Thursday, September, 25, 2008 3:25 PM
Send In Sarah
I like #4-Send In Sarah! Look, since it is billed as a foreign policy debate, she will be fresh on that as she has spent this past week meeting international leaders at the United Nations. And really, I think that it would be a message that Gov. Palin is up for the job of second in command. I think Sen. McCain ends up showing up and mopping up the floor with Sen. Messiah Barack.
Norman F writes: Thursday, September, 25, 2008 3:20 PM
Screw The Debate!
Matt, if there's no rescue deal in place by Friday, let Obama have an empty podium to debate. If Obama wants to talk about foreign policy, he could not make himself more irrelevant and distant from the concerns of Americans. It would underline the fact Obama puts his personal political well-being ahead of the well-being of the country. I can only see a plus for McCain in working to help get the economy back on its feet while Obama plays politics as usual. So if Obama wants to destroy himself, its best not to interfere.
RASHUM writes: Thursday, September, 25, 2008 3:13 PM

The press always say the Democrat one regardless. What really matter are the polls the next day. The focus groups claim to be 10 Reps, 10 Dems and 10 Indys, but we all know that the Indys are always Dem leaning and I often question if those who claim to be Reps really are.
