Emblematic of the Upcoming Presidency?

It could be argued that President Obama's speech was, in a sense, emblematic of the situation he now confronts. His very welcome "shout out" of defiance to the terrorists reflects the fact that no longer can he (or any Democrat) critique safely from the sidelines. The nation's security rests squarely on their shoulders.
In yet a larger sense, however, it seems clear that the speech failed to live up to expectations. That's not because it was a bad speech; in fact, it was a very graceful one. But anticipation for it was sky-high it -- one commentator yesterday was speculating that it would be a "speech for the ages." Well, not exactly, as it turned out.
Those outsized expectations and that sense of anticlimax may be one of President Obama's greatest problems. When the oceans don't fall, or the world fails to salute us as its designated leader (and it was interesting to see someone who is supposed to be so tuned into world opinion announcing that it would lead everyone else -- that plays well at home, but not so much overseas), what happens then?
On a final, frivolous note: It will be interesting to see Michelle Obama's ball gown this evening. I wasn't so much a fan of her outfit this morning. Maybe it's personal taste, but what's with the sparkle/bling in the daytime? And if you're going to wear a very specific color, like chartreuse, the gloves need to be dyed to match. Just an opinion from someone who's never laid claim to fashionista status . . .
In any case, we wish them all personal happiness, and even political success -- when it's in the best interests of the country we all love.

Well, we now have a good idea what the Jacksonian inaugural was like. |
Scarlett O'Hara let's see how the new kid on the block does after his first game of "marbles". And I wasn't crazy about MO's outfit either.
Pssst! Clinton could have done something after the Cole incident and the first WTC happening. Guess he was too busy??
Either way I wish BO well and hope he is successful. Otherwise we are in deep poo.. |
And I mean that sincerely.
What planet are you on. The democrats ignored terrorism,it was strictly a law enforcement issue. The one's the 9/11 commission mentioned for putting up "walls" to prevent the sharing of intelligence. Can you say Jamie Glick... I knew you could.
Terrorism wasn't a threat unless of course you get caught in a scandal, then hey bomb the heck out of Saddam and the Sudan. Is means Is, as in a firm present tense, there is no other definition Mr. Clinton.
The democrats warned that Saddam had WMD, but Bush is a liar????? I can give you links to Clinton and Gore and Clinton appointed CIA director Tenant saying EXACTLY that.
Back to the article. Fact is that the Obama expectation meter is so high, there is no where to go but down. They haven't managed public expectations very well and the MSM is partly to blame since annoiting him the Mesiah, John F. Kennedy and as he claims Lincoln.
Tall orders to fill. |
The only things I wish him successful at is following the Constitution, you know the oath he stumbled on today. I do not wish him or the 9% minority any success if they try to install their marxist philosophy upon WE THE PEOPLE, nor do I wish him success with his extreme anti life agenda in giving Planned Murder Incorpated Carte Blanc over the lives of millions of preborn and surviving babies of abortion. NOr will I wish him success in robbing me and mine and millions of other producing Americans our hardearned money to give to millions of Peggy the Moochers. Nor do I want to fund the UN anymore, at all, NEVER for any reason. Otherwise, I wish him well and he'd better not tamper with talk radio either. I will pray for him that he honors his oath with no crossed fingers; and that he will have a Damascus Road experience. |

The problem with people who talk out both sides of their mouths and who talk without saying much is that time in the limelight hurts them. They get boring and lose their credibility. |
You just got busted up again on FACTS. I shut your pie hole yesterday with FACTS regarding the Clinton Recession, now Micheal can back up his position with easily verifiable facts while you spew what your boss Kos and Soros tell you. You never provide any support for your nutball positions. You are a walking lefty bumper sticker. Have you ever had an original thought of your own? Go puke your lefist propaganda somewhere else.
"I shut your pie hole ...your boss Kos and Soros...nutball positions...lefty bumper sticker...Go puke...lefist propaganda"
You forgot to use the words "ilk," "socialism," "nanny state." Aside from, you just about covered all the nutball positions.
Oh yeah, you could also mention that Obama (likely? probably? ah, who cares!) isn't a natural born citizen.
The speech was delivered expertly but the content was lacking. Obama sounded in campaign mode trying to be all things to all people. It just didn't connect and present a clear vision of where Obama wants to go with the country. I heard Reagan, Bush, JKF and Clinton in this speech. But you can't be all things to all people. Obama will have to take some stands soon. |

Holy Molely, do you realize who Dick Cheney really is? |
for the conspiracy theory nuts to jump out of their trees and claim that Obama is not the legit president because he and the chief justice fumbled the oath.
the clock starts... Now! Ronna? Laura? |

You are the poster add for the DEMS. as you truely are insane.Your dems have taken this country to the brink of ruin with you idiotic lies and leftist fervor.Your PRES. let terrorist attack our troops and our interest around the world and did nothing, THATS WHY the bastards were brave enough to do it here you fool. Your party wants Isreal to placate hamas too, you would have been the ones to say lets not fight lets try to talk to hitler instead of stopping him. So please SHUT UP and GO AWAY, no one here believes your ignorance or your lies. You are what is truely wrong with this country right now, and I for one wish you could somehwo be deported to IRAN, maybe after a few years there you would WAKE UP. But the thing about STUPID is there is no majic pill to take , YOU JUST STAY STUPID. |
How about judging me by the content of my posts and not your sterotype of what you think a "wingnut" is....I thought today we moved passed that type of thinking... |
why did the dems who are supposed to be for the women of this country, attack palin and question how she would take care of her children, yet while watching the festivities today, and showing the move in, we were told that obamas mom-in-law will also be living in the whitehouse, to tend to the KIDS.Michelle isnt part of the government but it ok for mom to do it for a dem just not a republican. You people amaze me. your lies and false crapola are visible too all to see. but you are the party of denial, of the truth,of reality of facts , and of honesty. Thats you political legacy so history will judge Bush alot better then it will jugde you idiots for sure. |
in "The Candidate" at the end when he actually won the election and he looked at his advisors and said "What do we do now?"
I remember as I watched it repeatedly saying to myself, "Okay, it's going to get better...okay, maybe now he'll get going," and then I noticed how even the adoring masses on the Mall weren't applauding or anything after the obvious applause lines, having collective "Huh?" moments, and I realized at that point, "This really IS dull as dishwater." It didn't come close to BHO's highpoint speeches of the campaign. (In fact, the high points of the whole inauguration were the musical quartet (Izhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, et. al.) and Dr. Joseph Lowrey. The poet - utter bilge.)
The key is, Obama wrote it himself. Axelrod didn't write it, his staff didn't, HE did, and what we saw confirmed our worst fears: The man is an empty suit, and in WAY over his head.
God help this country... |
"The Dems were the ones who warned Bush going into office in 2001 of the terrorist threat, so don't give us this bullshite anymore". Totally laughable!!!!!! Yeah they may have "warned" GWB for 7 months prior to the 9/11/2001 attacks....... EXACTLY what did the Dems do for the preceeding 8 YEARS under Slick Willie while Al Qaeda attacked us at least 4 times, once on our soil????? The Dems who "sat on their hands" for 8 years while we were being attacked around the globe by Al Qaeda, have no right to "Monday morning quarterback" someone else who had basically just taken office when 9/11 occurred!!!! Slick Willie "owns" the attacks and deaths on 9/11. Don't try to lay that one at GWB's feet. |
Clinton did bomb the $hit out of that aspirin factory between hummers from the fat girl....Bubba is the man !!! |
Here are the facts:
1. Obama said finding Bin Ladin, the master mind of 9/11, is no longer a priority. What national security?
2. Clinton and both Bush's are gone. Barak, the made of 'sound judgment' and 'change we can believe in' is now in charge. ONLY Barak is responsible for our national security decisions as commander in chief, and ONLY Barak's decisions can keep us safe.
This means, we will give Barak credit when our enemies are stopped and we will blame Barak when we are attacked. If this is simple enough for you to fathom, then go celebrate elsewhere and dance on the USSA's grave as comrade in chief takes office to begin it's construction:)
FYI - no amount to convincing will give you peace. Amazingly, for people who want us to Believe in Barak, you spend too much time in the past. Isn't it your time now? Focus please. Even you might notice that the ocean levels are still the same and Barak's rheteric sounds a lot like Bush on foreign policy. Difference being, I believed Bush as did the terrorists, I don't believe Barak and neither do the terrorists.
Have a good time partying, the titanic just sailed and you think the water won't be reaching the top deck. LOL! |

I watched it with my daughter and son who are 6 and 3. I wanted them to know, that we respect inauguration as an american tradition that makes us a safe place to live and a true democracy. I also wanted them to see Obama and his arrival to 'executive position' for the first time in his life.
When he couldn't complete his oath without blunders, I felt let down. As an american, the oath is sacred for any public servant. The man failed miserably and Justice Roberts was blamed (imagine that!). I listened to the speech without the media glitz so that I could HEAR HIM, hoping his teleprompter worked well enough for him to make some substansive points. Again, he fambled.
After the third strike (arriving late, botching the oath and making the most boring historic speech ever) I lost my patience. I think it was then I fully realized, Hussein is a Hoax and our country is completely going to pay for this hoax.
I have to say, he is out of his league by ALL MEASURES. Russia and others are having a ball and knowing it won't be long before the USSA gets outwitted. Can you imagine the community organizer negotiating with commander of KGB Putin. He is sooooo out of his league it's depressing. |
The lefties love to blame GWB because he didn't stop 9/11 BEFORE it happened....... Scary O'Hairy tries to claim Slick Willie did something AFTER the 4 attacks against us on his watch.......... GWB ALSO did something AFTER the 9/11 attacks. He invaded Afghanistan and routed, at least at that time, the Taliban into the mountains and out of power. AND if we're going to debate GWB not doing anything BEFORE 9/11, then I guess we better discuss why Clinton did nothing BEFORE: the WTC attack in 1993 the attack on the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia in 1995 the attacks on our 2 Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya in 1998 and the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000
In summary: according to the lefties, GWB was supposed to have stopped the 9/11 attacks BEFORE they happened, but Slick Willie need only to react, ineffectively I might add, AFTER the 4 attacks that happened on his watch. No need for Clinton to have prevented THOSE attacks...... Let's blame GWB for everything!!!!! Puh-leeze!!!!! |

Other than the collapse of the stock market, in the worst inauguration day drop in history, I am not aware of any looting anywhere in the country.
I agree with this column. I think Obama won't be able to live up to the expectations that some people have of him. A lot of people don't realize the enormous size of the holes that the previous administration dug. We are in deep doo-doo right now in the short term as well as the long term. It will take more than four years to dig us out. It will take more than eight years to dig us out. The biggest question is whether the American people are prepared to do what it takes or will they just prefer to inflate the bubble even more.
In hindsight, it wasn't that Obama's speech was good or bad, I wouldn't know, I refused to listen to it, it was all about the hype and premature expectations that the media made about the speech.
This is what we can expect until Obama finally figures out that he really can't walk on water and the media need to stop insisting he can. This has been a media driven even from the beginning and they have completely oversold the package. But then, it is the only thing in the media world that seems to be selling anymore. |

Does anyone else notice the similarities between the end of the Roman Empire and the present condition of the United States? We are being over run by foreigners, while the government wants to grant them citizenship. We are losing our language. The elite classes refuse to serve in the military and military service is detested by the same group. The government is busy giving the rabble bread and circuses. Etc, etc.
Here is the full quote:
"Iam pridem, ex quo suffragia nulli vendimus, effudit curas; nam qui dabat olim imperium, fasces, legiones, omnia, nunc se continet atque duas tantum res anxius optat, panem et circenses ." “Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, we the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions - everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.” -- Roman Satirist, Iunius Decimus Iuvenalis (Juvenal), Satire 10, 77-81.
In addition, in the last century of the empire, the most qualified declined to serve in political office because they were responsible for tax payments to the imperial government, and had to make up the shortfalls themselves (each area was assessed a certain amount). In better times it was considered an honor to serve as decurio; later, it was avoided. There were more who were drawing from the imperial purse than were contributing - in simple terms, more taking from the treasury than were paying into it, and this done by government employees - palace staff and the military. People eventually walked away from their farms and joined the barbarian invaders. People refused to serve in the military to defend a system which became oppressive - draft dodgers cut off their thumbs so as not to be able to hold a sword or spear. The increasing socialization of our economy will break us as the above phenomena broke the Roman Empire - when Larry Flynt is looking for bailouts for the porn industry, you know things have reached the level of the ridiculous.
Unfortunately, it may take a revolution or a dictatorship to straighten out the country - neither prospect is a pretty picture.
“When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.” -- Benjamin Franklin

ALL the time. Whereas Republicans look for POTUS candidates who are strong leaders, Democrats look for someone to fall in love with. It's the classic logic versus emotion paradigm. Dems are ruled my emotions. The lefty rag here in Milwaukee had a special section entitled HOPE OVER FEAR....as though the Dems had defeated the Star Wars Evil Empire. That's preposterous and a direct reflection of how Dems and liberals view the election results: Our good and gentle savior has rescued us from oppression. Seriously, it's like you guys were sprung from a Nazi concentration camp. Are your lives at ALL different from yesterday?? Be honest. Be prepared for EXTREME disappointment and disillusionment liberals and Dems. When BHO fails to come through with a big fat check to you for doing absolutely nothing, be prepared for sadness. When we doesn't END global warming on March 2, 2009, get your crying towel out; you're going to be upset. When this country's severe problems are as intransigent in 9 months as they were on January 19.....well don't come crying to me and say I didn't warn you. Soaring rhetoric, a mushy-headed electorate and a corrupt media may get an empty suit like Obama elected, but it won't magically solve problems overnight. I pray that he can be successful, but remember that Obama is just a man, and Congress is still full of the same a**clowns as it was on January 19 (mostly Dem ones, naturally). |
Once Obama's team realized the speech was rather flat they issued a release saying it was meant to be a working man like speech. If this were the case they should have announced that before the speech. The masters of deception at work. The marketing campaign continues. |
You are not- MO's gloves matched her shoes, not her dress.

Duncan62, did you really just ask Liberals to be honest?!? Maybe you should define honesty for them? Perhaps you should ask them to "explore the truthiness" of the situation instead. Libs have to wait for the media spin and the DnC to define what is the daily version of the "truth" before they can be "honest" about anything. Seriously, I agree with all you've said, but you can't, with a straight face, ask Liberals to be honest! That would ignore their entire worldview about situational ethics and their "shades of grey" morality. |

Get ready for the ride folks, you just bought yourself a snakeoil presidency. I never feel good about a person who is more style than substance, I ain't seen or heard substance from this human in over 2 years, it probably won't start now! |
Michelle looked good. Isn't that the idea behind fashion? |
"I ain't seen or heard substance from this human in over 2 years, it probably won't start now!"
Seems to me he's accomplished a good amount of substance in just four days. The right-wing is certainly howling in outrage. |

The scariest part of Obama's speech was when he said, "Our security emanates from the justness of our cause; the force of our example; the tempering qualities of humility and restraint." Really? Did the justness of the Jews secure them? How was Poland being unjust when they were slaughtered? The world is a dangerous place. I am glad he's continuing Bush's foreign policy because it is the right policy for now. I do not like that his Treasury pick is a tax cheat and his AG pick pardoned the FALN terrorists and the corrupt Marc Rich. There needs to be more public outcry about this. Also, he is using the recession to scare the country into accepting his massive stimulus plan which does not meet the government's own assessment of being "timely, targeted and temporary". He's got the unused other half of the TARP, but he wants more. He is sneaking in his plans to socialize healthcare and he's moving fast to get it done. Wake up!!! |
