Well, What's the Difference?

It's being reported that Justice David Souter is going to retire. Accordingly, the President will get his first Supreme Court pick, and given his views and the heavy Dem tilt in the Senate, it's likely to be a very lefty one.
Well, same difference. Souter -- appointed by President George H.W. Bush -- has been one of the most predictably left-wing (and intellectually undistinguished) votes on the Court (thank you, John Sununu).
Sure, a new member may change the "chemistry" of the Court, but it's not likely to change the outcome of many votes. It doesn't strike me as likely that Chief Justice Roberts, or Justices Thomas, Scalia and Alito are likely to be "seduced" by a charismatic new liberal in the way that Justices Souter and O'Connor were, early in their careers, by Justice Brennan. (Anthony Kennedy, of course, is anyone's guess.)
It's been relatively well-known that Souter was ready to retire for some time. In a final graceless move, he apparently wanted to make sure that the son of the man who appointed him wouldn't have the chance to appoint his successor.

and the reason that you don't like Thomas is because he is black?!? Shame on you. Sorry, but the so called activist nimrods are the Liberal wing when they decide bad law like Roe vs Wade in the 70's. Or when they become activist judges and make law from the bench... there are no real constitutional judges there maybe except for Roberts and Thomas who are in a minority. The current 'president' is not thoughtful nor reasoned... look at all of the tax cheats he has and is appointing. They ALL have bad pasts as does his other picks! Change in His case means: more of the same. But, he can get rid of one of his nemisis: Hitlery... just appoint her to the "bench". And you may go ahead and write off the US Constitution as well as the Declaration of Independence. With Obama's New World Order and his tax and spend mentality as well as Cap & Trade even his kool aid drinking supporters will ALL suffer... how many days until we get rid of him?? |

Boy is this chick stoooopid! The difference, LieBowwow is that the court will balance liberal for the next 40 years if O puts up a relatively younger justice - and gets the chance to replace Ruth Ginsberg (old and sick), Stevens (89) and perhaps Scalia - at 73, he'll be heading over 80 if Obama wins a second term...
I understand - like Specter LEAVING the republicans this is really a boon to the right - everything is...except, apparently, winning... |

I didn't read the link, I just assumed it was referring to Bush41's chief of staff, John Sununu. The Bushes have a history of putting up a mild, pleasant exterior while employing thugs like John Sununu, Lee Atwater, or Karl Rove. |

"In a final graceless move, he apparently wanted to make sure that the son of the man who appointed him wouldn't have the chance to appoint his successor."
So you think it's "graceless" when Supreme Court justices time their retirements according to which party is in power? |

I ask you a question I do not often ask: Did your parents have ANY kids that lived? |
