As I mentioned, South Carolina has no New Hampshirite and Iowan predilections about negative advertising.
Of course, as a result of the bare-knuckle environment, things can get ugly, as they did for John McCain today.
Even before the Michigan primary voting ends, surrogates for Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) organized a conference call with reporters to push back against an incendiary flier that was passed out to members of the South Carolina media today. The flier, which came from a group called "Vietnam Veterans Against John McCain" and attacked the Arizona Senator's time spent as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, was roundly condemned by a group of McCain supporters that including former P.O.W. Orson Swindle as well as South Carolina House Speaker Bobby Harrell and state Attorney General Henry McMaster.
The flier was distributed to about 100 local journalists, and apparently claims that McCain "turned on his fellow POWs to save his own skin," according to a statement from fellow POW Orson Swindle: "Nothing could be further from the truth. I know because I was there. "The truth is, the North Vietnamese offered John McCain early release, and he refused. He stuck to the time honored military code of first-in, first-out, and stood by his fellow POWs until the end -- even at the risk of his own life as he was severely injured."

McCain "buried" his fellow POWs left behind in Vietnam. Fully documented here: http://www.nationinstitute.org/p/schanberg09182008pt1

I know nothing about Senator McCain's military years, but I do know where he stands with respect to illegal immigrants:
Senator McCain was part of the bipartisan coalition that tried to pass amnesty legislation in 2006 and 2007. In 2006 he voted in favor of S. 2611, legislation that would reward between 10 and 11 million illegals with amnesty if they apply for legal status and pay a $2,000 fine.
Supported in-state tuition for illegal aliens. Mr. McCain was a cosponsor of S. 774, the Dream Act, providing in-state tuition for illegal aliens. The legislation would have enabled illegal aliens who entered the United States before age 16 to obtain a green card and then use their newly acquired status to obtain green cards for the millions of parents who illegally brought their children with them into the United States. Mr. McCain missed a Senate vote on the issue in October. He said that he would have opposed it on the Senate floor had he been there to vote.
Voted to kill border fence. In 2006, Mr. McCain voted for an amendment to S. 2611 offered by Sen. Arlen Specter to require consultation with the Mexican government concerning the construction of fencing along the U.S.-Mexican border. According to Numbers USA, an organization that lobbies against illegal immigration, this amendment would have effectively guaranteed that the border fence was never built.
Voted against permanently barring gang members and terrorists from the United States. Last year, Mr. McCain voted against an amendment (Senate Amendment 1184) introduced by Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, that would have permanently barred gang members, terrorists, sex offenders, alien absconders, aliens convicted of domestic violence and aliens convicted of at least three DUIs from the United States. The Cornyn Amendment was rejected on a 51-46 vote.

Having lived, gone to college, run for office, and getting married in the South, this is typical. I don't have a dog in this hunt yet, but this tactic is lower than the NVA swine who put our troops through such misery. Jail with Bubba in the same cell is what the writers and their helpers deserve. |

... but don't ferget about McCain's black baby!
heheheh.

I have many disagreements with John McCain. However, there is nothing to suggest that he served less than honorably, and much to prove that his service was very honorable. |

I cannot stand McCain. anyone who has read my posts know that. I think he is a bitter old useless, vindictive and arrogant man and I would probably vote for Obama over McCain. But this is just a dumb thing to do. It's creates sympathy for the most unsympathetic jerk in american politics. |

When John McCain was a POW, his father was the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Forces (a 4 Star Admiral). The Vietnamese offered to release him as part of a propaganda move aimed at influencing his father. McCain refused unless they released all his men from captivity. |
