Harry Reid Blames California Wildfires On Global Warming...Before He Denies He Said It.

After a closed door policy meeting with other Senate Democrats, Majority Leader and utter buffoon Hary Reid of Nevada took to the microphones just outside the floor of the United States Senate, and fielded questions.
In response to a question on the energy bill, Reid said the following:
As you know, one reason that we have the fires burning in Southern California is global warming. One reason the Colorado Basin is going dry is because of global warming.
Six questions later, a reporter followed up on Reid's amazing statement.
Question: Senator, on the California fires, you said that the reason the fires are burning in California is global warming?
Reid: No. Here's what I - I didn't say the reason the fires were burning in Southern California was global warming...
First, Reid is an idiot because tried to use global warming as a prop in a current news story in order to advance his energy bill agenda. When called on it, he denied he said it. It's on tape. You can listen to it here.
Second, he has no idea what he's talking about. Southern California is a desert. The Santa Ana winds are as normal this time of year as any other local weather phenomenon. In fact, some of the weathermen in the area had speculated on television newscasts in recent weeks that we usually get Santa Anas before now. And in the scope of the severity of the winds, this batch isn't even as bad as we've had. This is a very average wind pattern for us.
Reid may have wanted to blame the fires on global warming before he got called on it and ran away, but I'd be hard pressed to be persuaded that global warming caused arsonists to start several of these fires, or that global warming knocked down a power line in Malibu starting that fire, or that global warming caused a couple of construction workers to work with an arc welder in high winds, showering the local brush with sparks.
So now that Reid has publicly raised the global warming specter...that is, before he lowered it again in classic John Kerry fashion, it makes you wonder what's worse for Harry Reid's environment? Letting the fires burn, or polluting the ozone with all the hydrocarbons that come out of the exhaust of the DC-10's and helicopters that are frantically dropping water and fire retardant on the hot spots? Should Reid be calling for the removal of the firefighting from the air in order to minimize the footprint the fires are already putting in the air and remain consistent with his radical environmentalism?
Reid is a witless opportunist. Half a million people are evacuated, at least 1,200 homes have been lost so far, federal, state, county and local resources are performing acts of heroism all over California to save lives and property, and Harry Reid wants to blame it on global warming to score political points for his energy bill? What a creep.

So, now, President Bush is responsible for the fires in California, too??? Give me a break!!! The reason California (and many other thick forested areas) has so many uncontrollable forest fires is because the "environmental NUTS" (Democrats) won't let the forests be "thinned out" of dead wood (because it might uproot a few spotted owls & "God Forbid that THAT happens" -- so, I guess we'd rather have the disastrous forest fires & then blame it on George Bush -- yeah, that makes sense, right?...Come on, people, when are you going to wake up??? Thin the dead wood out of those overgrown forests -- then, the fires wouldn't have much to feed on & wouldn't be burning down your $10 million dollar mansions (& killing the owls as well!!!) Next time you want to save something, think about the repercussions of what you might be setting up to be destroyed. Just a thought.....as if YOU actually THINK!!!..
Stephan C. Drew Darlington, S.C. (where we thin our forests & burn it -- yeah to destroy the ozone) -- that layer which 200 scientist (not just Gore) earned the Nobel Prize tried to protect -- yeah, Gore didn't win it by himself, but he took ALL the press, didn't he??? Typical. |

Geez, take it easy, Dr. Schweitzer. I congratulate you for your good works and note that you are not the first person to admonish humanity that Jesus is coming soon in capital letters.

Your evaluation of Christians and their value is typical of the hatefilled LEFT! I've personally been to W. Africa 8 times and helped put water wells in villages that did not have any clean water, and you? I've helped thousands get free medical care and medicine, and you? I've been to Central and South America 4 times and helped, and you? The Carribean 2 times , and you? I will match my giving to charity percentage to yours anyday. Call me whatever name you want to, I effect more good than you will in 100 lifetimes......because Jesus is COMING BACK SOON! |

Does anyone know here I might find a full transcript or complete audio of the exchange?
Cutting his response mid-line without then later including the full response strikes me as a bit odd.
I want to know if he truly dug a hole or if we are digging one for ourselves. Please post the entire exchange so we can judge for ourselves. Accuracy and honesty are more important to me than scoring some points. |

Duane,
Reid is indeed a moron, there is no need to reach for examples. He corrected the reporter and, in fact, was right in doing so. He said "one of", the question said "the reason". He then said, no, I said one of". What's wrong with that? Did I miss something?
|

It's a fact. It's reflective of the response to a mandate touted and NEVER executed. Sure-----the country saw the HUGELY powereful increase in minimum wage legislation brought about by this seachange democrat congress and democrat party. YeeHaw, we're moving this country now. We're at 11% approval and growing----oooops that growing we're experiencing is moss under the feet of democrats. All those ideas, all of those promises, being nurtured like a fine fungus among us. |

"The public isn't stupid. They understand that Republican fillibustering and Republican vetoes have stood in the way of fulfilling the 2006 commitments."
Whereas, the Dems didn't stand in the way of Bush's judicial nominees with constant filibustering, invoking cloture for a non-legislative issue for just about the first time in American history?
" You cannot throw up barriers and obstacles, and then say to the American people: "look, the dimmycrats haven't achieved anything.""
Why, yes you can! It's been done from time immemorial, so much so that the term "Do-Nothing Congress", first used by Harry Truman in 1948, is enshrined in our political vocabulary.
"In fact, it is that kind of cheap manuveuring which further cements the Republican "brand" as low-rent, manipulative, and childish."
Snork! You want cheap maneuvering, I got yer cheap maneuvering right here! Its chief practitioners are named Schumer, Reid, and Leahy.
Fact is, when political leaders make big promises KNOWING the makeup and strength of their opposition, and then fail to keep them, it is they, not the opposition, who are tainted with the charge of fecklessness.
Deal with it.
|
|
Don't forget that Global Warming also causes snow to fall in the SoCal mountains every year, fog to initiate crashes on the SoCal freeways, and (this is the best part, right?)... Global Warming also causes women to start walking around in string bikinis.
Of all the "terrible" consequences of Global Warming, isn't fat old dues in speedoes one of the more significant issues?
This "controversy" is made for laughing at because "phony scientists" have turned it into a joke. All that Harry Reid does for the Senate is introduce more hot air into the room every time he opens his mouth than a Santa Ana wind. |

As noted elsewhere, beliefs in themselves do not confer legitimacy. There are many fine evangelical Christians and I do not enjoy insulting them. But their appocalyptic worldview does drive, I think, a heedless view towards the fate of man and a harsh perspective towards mankind itself. Interpersonally, they are the nicest people you can know. But on the broader level, where politics and policy lives, they are of a piece with certain quarters in every generation--the myopic and ignorant notion that their own era is unique, and that the end of the world is basically imminent. Such people are useless in discussions of global warming or middle-east policy or nuclear proliferation or the other problems facing humanity that require long-term vision. Sorry, but its true. And they are useless because their stupid belief-system makes them useless. |
|
Senator Reid won't care about the carbon dioxide from the exhaust of the aircraft and vehicles and firefighters working to extinguish the California wildfires and rightly so. These amounts will pale against the millions of tons of carbon dioxide released by the burning of millions of trees and thousands of homes, office buildings, vehicles, and other objects made from combustible materials.
I guarantee you that so long as this fire burns, on a per capita basis, California leads the world in the prodcution of carbon dioxide.
Perhpas if so many people didn't crowd together on the edge of and within such a huge desert and didn't divert water from such a huge area, so that so many trees can grow, well you get the idea... |
|
This is out on the news wires:
The cause of most of the fires is still under investigation, but authorities believe some were due to downed power lines, a vehicle fire and in one case, arson. The winds don't care about the cause.
Yes Harry - global warming is the reason people commit arson. |
|
advantage somewhere, anywhere.
It can honestly been said that the 1 year anniversary of the dimocrat takeover is approaching without Reid or Pelosi having accomplished ANYTHING. He has no bit of legislation he can tag his name to...not a bit.
When is the big Iraq BugOut? They promised all the swamp-fever liberals, and haven't delivered ANYTHING at all.
So Harry has to seek advantage wherever he can...has to keep the dullard sycophants (Pancreatic Fiberal) of the dimocrat party happy. |
|
"Global warming is a problem"
No, it really isn't. The climate is ALWAYS either warming or cooling. Cooling would be a much worse problem than warming. Food crops can survive a warmer climate with longer growing seasons. They can't survive cooler climate with earlier frosts. Every degree of cooling takes millions of acres out of food production. Every degree of warming adds millions of acres. |
|
Patriotic Liberal,
The Malibu fire started as a result of the seasonal Santa Ana winds knocking over power lines, and thus far we know that many (if not all) of the other current So Cal fires are a result of arson. As a long-time resident of So Cal, you know very well the long history of arsonists starting fires during the seasonal Santa Ana winds. Therefore, everyone ought to be repulsed by Scary Reid asserting the fires were caused by 'global warming.'
But for you to go on an angry rant against Duane, as well as against Christians, is just a little over the top, even for you. You wrote; ------------------- "Global warming is a problem, although it will always be denied by the nihilists on the Right who pretty much have written off humanity and this old earth anyhow. When you are a self-involved doofus waiting for the imminent return of Jesus (and with it, sweet vindication), what do you care what kind of world your grandchildren or great-grandchildren will live in?" -------------------- Patriotic Liberal, sometimes I think your Cialis tablets divert too much blood flow away from your brain. |

Harry Reid is not merely witless, he is nefarious. If he believes what he says, he is too stupid to hold the office he has been demeaning during his terms; if he doesn't believe what he says, he is venal and nefarious and should be driven from office. The proof of his abject incompetence is the now celebrated letter to Mark Mays. If I were a Democrat of any stripe, I would be outraged at the quality of his mis-representation of me. |
|
PatLib and Frey: you offer the lamest and most specious defenses of Reid's comments by attempting to parse "one of the reasons" as allowing Reid wiggle room --- when the plain FACT is that global warming has NOTHING to do with the seasonal phenomenon of Santa Ana winds and brushfires.
MechEye cites development in SoCal as contributing to the problem. Did he do the same with NOLA? Why should libs say that NOLA-ites have a right to live where they do, and demand hundreds of billions to make them whole, but put the blame on SoCal residents, many Orange County conservatives, to live where *they* do?
Oh and it's got to SUCK for libs that the Cal state and local govt. are on top of the situation --- not much chance to blame Bush, is there... |
|
Politicans tie to the bigger picture. That's what they do. For Duane to be repulsed--repulsed--by Reid's heavy-handed tactics is pretty weak. Linking to the bigger picture is how Republican politicians blame "corrosive liberalism" for some mother killing her children. On a certain level, there's some truth to it.
Reid's argument is fairly ridiculous. I've heard more stupid arguments, but it was pretty bad. Global warming is not ridiculous. Global warming is a problem, although it will always be denied by the nihilists on the Right who pretty much have written off humanity and this old earth anyhow. When you are a self-involved doofus waiting for the imminent return of Jesus (and with it, sweet vindication), what do you care what kind of world your grandchildren or great-grandchildren will live in? |
|
As I read the excerpts provided by Duane, Harry Reid said "one reason," not "the reason." I'll give you that he tried to tie the fires to global warming, but Duane is like a bright teenager, triumphantly pouncing on legalisms or misspeaks. There's no pattern here, beyond Reid's human fallibility and Duane's propensity to castigate his political opponents in raw and nasty terms. I mean, we all get carried away sometimes, but Duane's posts are almost invariabliy niggling and harsh.

For the last two days, the fact is that Harry the Semarer has decided to bring up the Dream Act again on Wed. This is the time for those who care, to blast him via emails, I have sent 4 emails so far via NumbersUSA to stop this illegal immigration fraud. Reid also is trying to stop Judge Southwick. This guy is not only a fraud, a smearer , but a bigot. It is time for the entire Right to go after him big time. |
|
|
Is to transfer heavy industry from cleaner energy producing countries like Western Europe and North America to places like China. If I were China, I would be dumping as much money as I could into whichever political party was hyping the global warming stuff ... oh ... wait! Nevermind. |
|
to keep Scarry Reid right where he does the most good for the GOP, in his leadership role!!! When the thermostat in my house goes up a .06 degree, fires just pop up all over the den and kitchen, "Kids who turned up that durn thermostat agin???" And those KrazyKosKids say Republicans are always fear mongering! Remember alGored, "HE PLAYED ON OUR FEARS!!!" Oh Yeah, right....... |
|
Even if the global warming alarmists are correct and if their models are right, we are talking about a 0.1 degree warming since a decade ago and most of that warming would, according to the models, take place in the polar regions so there would be no change that a person could notice in temperature over their lifetime from global warming. We are talking about around 1.5 degrees per CENTURY of change in the GLOBAL average. A reasonable guess would be that over the course of a century, IF the global warmers are correct, there would be somewhere close to zero noticeable change in temperature in San Diego County.
Oh, yeah. It's a crisis alright. |
|
gotcha'. ;) You're not satisfied with those creatively-challenged remarks, i.e., scary Larry.
yeah, you would prefer to get the focus back where it belongs; on the fabulous. Comments such as, "Bush is Hitler" such as your type have quipped so often. YeeHaw, that's not only creative, it's so, well, let's just say, very high brow---just what you are seeking. Or, how 'bout, "F*CK BUSH"? Yeah, that one thought up by a bunch of college kids in Colorado, printed in their school newspaper. That one is so, Artsy-fartsy. Yeah, Mekanikal, I read ya loud and clear. You'd rather have your, "Hate Bush" rhetoric, as evidenced by the glitzy Hollywood campaign back in '04. Yeah, "Hate Bush". Has a great ring to it---and, it was thunk up by none other than Larry David---that ever popular, "fab" producer of the Seinfeld series. Now that is creative--"Hate Bush"---I'm laughing out loud. It even headlined for the campaign he organized to raise millions from all his fab-friends in Hollywood.
Okay, Mekanikal, no more, scary Larry's. We'll get down and dirty with your style and call these schmucks exactly what they really are. |
|
...the first one to the gentleman from Nevada: It might be getting warmer in Southern California, but trust me...not THAT hot.
The second point: Harry Reid is NOT third in line of succession for the presidency. That's the bad news. Here's the worse news: Robert Byrd IS. Harry is merely not very bright. Byrd, on the other hand...God bless him, but it really is time for Grandpapa to retire. |
|
Reid is o f the ilk of quintessential morons who way-back in the day of SPQR,Senator-Generals like Sulla;Caesar-Pompey-Crassus;Antony;and finally Augustus, overthrew these feckless, preening pseudo-oligarchs and saved their nation for a further 500 year run.A Second American Civil War is not impossible when the best the Blue offer is a power mad Lady Macbeth;a shameless trader on racial victimization;and a narcissistic pretty boy lawyer pretending he's Huey Long. God help the USA! Arthur McVarish, Houston |
|
I admit to having called Harry Reid a couple of things not exactly Harry Reid:
Hary (just because it makes me sick to type his name)
Whiny Reid (that one's obvious)
Surely that's no lower than he got. If he were doing that dance where the stick gets lower and lower and you have to wiggle under it without dislodging the stick(can't think of the name of it to save me), he would win hands down.
|
|
|
Yes, we conservatives are generally quite polite, but we enjoy some mild, clean name-calling, especially when it's done with humor and backed by facts. Keep up the good work, Duane. |
|
I'm not into silly name calling. However, I will state that Senator Reid has no credibility left. He should resign immediately, but he won't. Just when you think he has sunk to the lowest point possible, he finds a new way to get even lower.
He's the Senate Majority Leader! It's not possible to make me embarrassed to be an American, but Senator Reid comes close. |
|

|
What's this? Something about a "witless" comment about the California fires and not a word about fellow broadcaster/blowhard Glenn Beck?
Reid's comment wasn't terribly well thought out, but talking about a weather-related disaster and climate change isn't beyond the pale anymore -- further, we in California do need to understand we're building communities in dangerous, environmentally unstable places. Shockingly, climate issues come up when climate-related disasters happen.
What's worse is that Hugh Hewitt generally puts on interesting, if deeply hackish, partisan radio, so you'd think his commenters would do better than mutter weak insults like "scary Larry."
This is stuff a 12 year old would be ashamed of. Can't you guys thinks of more creative put-downs?

You know, it'd be nice if somebody would explain what global warming has to do with wildfires. And what the hell does global warming mean?
The earths surface temperature over the last century has risen 0.6°C. That calculates out to 0.06°C of temperature rise every decade.
I want you to do a little experiment. Go to the thermostat in your home. Whatever it reads, for example 70°, I want you to either bump it up to 71° or down to 69°. Go about your business for the rest the of the day. Momentarily remind yourself of the temperature adjustments you made. Try and recognize if you can feel any tangible difference in the temperature.
For those of you who have no intentions of trying this, the answer No, you won't.
Which leads me to my main question. What does global warming mean?
|
|
Demowit's highly visible Front Man.Please, Demowits, keep the Doofus Maximus as your mouth-piece with mics & cameras purring. Lovin' It!
Is this S**tbird in the senate until '2010? Nevadans will give him--please God--a well deserved toss of the Tommy Daschle variety. |
|
You guys claim to be the only true Americans, and yet you don't know the difference between saying "the (only) reason," and saying "one reason (among many)"?
Sheesh. And you guys accuse the Dems of irrational bashing. |
|
|
He sounds Starks-raving mad! Same party - same idiocy. |
|
"And I didn’t get my way, so I thought I would throw just a little tantrum"
- Senate majority leader Harry Reid |
|
|
This liar is THIRD in line for the presidency! Or is that 'turd in line'? |
|
Thanks for calling Reid on this one, Duane. It reminds me of the "witless opportunists" who were playing politics with the Minneapolis bridge before the bodies were even recovered. Save the point-scoring until the good people of SoCal are back in their homes -- those that didn't lose theirs.
Prayers for all you folks in the area! Keep safe!

Reid is indeed a creep.
He is also a pinhead
and a fathead
How, you may ask, can he be a fathead and a pinhead at the same time?
I haven't the foggiest, but he does pull it off.
It must be some sort of demo-mojo-thingie unique to him |
|

The perfect description of Reid...well played |
|
|
...anything better from this creep, Scary Harry? |
