"Opinion Leaders" Don't Always Reflect Voters' Opinions ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:26 AM

Yesterday, I commented on Patrick Hynes assertion that it is more important to communicate with voters than with the conservative media.

Of course, he's right: The conservative "insiders" often don't reflect or represent the wishes of conservative voters.  As they say in sports: "That's why we play the games."

Let's not forget that Reagan wasn't the first choice of conservative leaders like Richard Viguerie and Paul Weyrich (who wanted Rep. Phil Crane) for president. But in the 1980 nomination contest, the  voters spoke -- and, as is the case with the "wisdom of crowds" -- the voters knew best.  (By the way, this is proof that no "vast right wing conspiracy" exists).

But part of me still believes that this is a PR move: If the conservative media loves you, you argue they matter; if they don't like you, you argue they are irrelevant, etc.

But I do think that a case could be made that we have created a conservative Intelligentsia that is out of touch with average voters. I mean, does George Will (just using him as an example) have more in common with the average guy living in Iowa, or a liberal in Washington, DC? Philosophically, he may have more in common with the guy in Iowa. But he also reads the same Washington Post -- and shops at the same Whole Foods store -- as everyone else inside the Beltway.  As Rush Limbaugh has argued for decades; it's hard to live in DC (or New York, for that matter), and not lose your moorings.

The bottom line is that conservative leaders do matter -- but Pat also makes a good piont: Neither George Will, nor Hugh Hewitt, nor Rich Lowry will cast a single vote in Iowa or New Hampshire ...

Using modern technology to reach real voters is something that should be applauded.  Let's see how it works.

What Real Americans Want
We want a candidate willing to represent AMERICAN CITIZENS, not pander to citizens of other countries illegally in our country.

These next 2 years are vital to the future of this country. For 2007 we must make certain that McCain/Kennedy or whatever it's called this year does not pass the House. It will pass the Senate. The President will sign it, followed by the Totalization Treaty with Mexico, which qualifies former illegals with just 6 qtrs(18 mo) even if worked illegally, the benefits that we had to work 40 qtrs(10 yrs) to qualify for.

In 2008 we must make the candidates address border security and immigration enforcement.
20-30 million citizens of other countries are in our country illegally, 55% from Mexico, most of the rest from other Central and South American countries. Let's not ignore the leftward voting trends of these countries. It is notable that they picked May Day, an old communist day of celebration for their marches.

Most polls show at least half of the American citizens of Hispanic descent want the borders and laws enforced. Republicans will not win by alienating their current voters to get 40% of a new small block that will grow very large, very fast if amnesty is granted. That will grow the Democrats vote larger and faster as the influx increases exponentially as the result of another amnesty. It will spell the end of the Republican Party. The people who used to vote Republican will stop voting or form a new party. Conservatives will lose political influence and we will slide inexorably towards socialism (it has already started).

Most of what you hear about this issue is political propaganda that tries to convince you to give up your country without a fight, including on Fox News. The big money players are all on board the cheap labor express, they care not that American citizens do not want another amnesty. We know the last one resulted in 10 times the number of illegal aliens and a general disregard of our laws. The next one will be equally successful.

We need Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement, not reform. We need to restore respect for the law and the faith of the American people that their government is not selling them out. Amnesty for the illegal aliens is also amnesty for the corrupt companies who have been employing them. Money trumps everything, including love of country. Multi-nationals have no loyalty to country by definition, they see us as a market, not a nation. They see people as workers, documented or undocumented, no difference. If they can't send the work to where the labor is cheaper, then they want to bring the cheap labor here. Citizenship is meaningless.

If we love our Constitution and our representative Republic and we intend to keep it we must not surrender our sovereignty or abandon the rule of law. Profits must not supercede security. We should not create a new path to citizenship. We have a path to citizenship, illegal aliens have ignored it and bad choices do have consequences.

Senator Straight Talk fears talk radio.

Matt,

Since you can hardly find any support for your candidate John McCain among conservative talking heads, you are asking if the lack of support for McCain is a result of the shortcomings of those conservative talking heads (!) rather than the fault of John McCain's own record in the Senate.

I find it painfully ironic that the guy who travels around in a bus called, "The Straight Talk Express" is hiding under the table everytime Hewitt, Prager, Medved, and Limbaugh call to ask McCain to appear on their talk show.
That doesn't sound like particularly "straight talk" to me.

If McCain truly wants to get down 'with the people,' he'd buck up and take some questions from callers on talk radio, live and un-edited.

Maybe John McCain can explain to farmers in Iowa & New Hampshire why he adamantly supports the inheritance tax.
In order to pay the hundreds of thousands of dollars they all of a sudden owe as a result of having the farm passed down to them by their father's will, many people are forced to immediately put the family farm up for sale.

Matt, do you think that's a fair tax policy ?
How do you feel about double-taxation ?
