Fools Rush In ...
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:46 AM
Does it bother anyone else that Bush is essentially taking cues from Barney Frank and Chris Dodd?

Dan Flynn offers this translation of Bushspeak:

Bush: "I'm a strong believer in free enterprise, so my natural instinct is to oppose government intervention. I believe companies that make bad decisions should be allowed to go out of business." Translation: These words are the exact opposite of my modus operandi. Of course, if by "free enterprise" you mean a mind-its-own-business government, then, hell no, I am against it. By "free enterprise" I mean nationalizing the world's largest insurance company, government giveaways of prescription drugs, enormous farm subsidies, socializing the losses of capitalists, the largest increase in government spending in my lifetime, and stuff like that.

Bush: "Once this crisis is resolved, there will be time to update our financial regulatory structures." Translation: Throw me the idol. I'll give you the whip.

And does it surprise anyone else that liberal Democrats are praising Paulson, and telling conservatives they should support a Republican Secretary of Treasury??

Something about this doesn't pass the sniff test...

Mark Sanford has a must-read in the WaPost today.  Here's an excerpt:

"It seems that each new crisis is met with a new answer from the government. After Hurricane Katrina, the federal government assumed roles traditionally handled by state and local governments. After the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the government federalized 25,000 workers through the Transportation Security Administration. The example of security-focused countries such as Israel, which elects to have that function handled by the private sector, did not matter. Now, our federal government is likely to commit three-quarters of a trillion dollars -- more than last year's Pentagon budget -- to a bailout based on what happened in the credit markets last week.

An ever-expanding scope of federal commitment and power is not what made this country great. Expanded power in one place comes at a cost in other places. American cornerstones such as individual initiative and an entrepreneurial spirit -- born in free and open societies with private property rights and the rule of law -- have never fit particularly well within the context of an ever-growing federal government."

The good news is that House Republicans aren't currently going along with the Paulson plan.  House Republicans have floated their own proposal which offers insurance, as opposed to merely "buying back" the bad debt.  It would suspend capital gains taxes for two years -- and also provide incentives, to encourage firms that buy-up bad debt.

Fundamentally, though small government conservatives are rightly concerned with big-government encroachments included in the Paulson plan.

The belief among House Republicans is that a bad bill is worse than no bill -- a point I tend to agree with.  Based on recent experience, conservatives are rightly skeptical of the "trust us" mentality that argues we should be in a rush to vote on something without reading the fine print (isn't that how we got into this mess to begin with)?

We may well need a bill to get us out of this situation, but a bad bill will set a dangerous precedent, as well as bring America even closer to socialism.  Washington and New York elites got us into this mess, but conservative congressmen are elected to represent we the people.

As many of us have noted in the past, this crisis was not the result of a lack of government intervention, but rather, because of it.  As such, House Republicans ought to insist on a clean bill which will solve the current crisis, without creating a new one.

And if this bill must pass, Democrats can pass this legislation without the support of conservative Republicans.  After losing in 2006, we have finally gotten a group of up-and-coming conservative young turks elected to congress who are not tainted by from being in the majority during the Bush years.

If this bad bill is to pass, let it happen without tainting conservative hands.

Thanks Jim P
but make that sister, I'm a lady.

They have come out this a.m. with news of a verbal agreement, but we had better be aware that
ACORN could be in the mix.

I wonder if they called Obama..he said for them to give him a jingle if they needed him. After
messing up their plan at the meeting I'm sure they are gonna call him. If he gets elected,
anyone got ideas as to who will be the shadow president? Michelle? Soros? REid (nah he's too dumb, ditto Pelosi, and Biden) The Saudi
Prince? who will it be, because this fool can't
think his way out of a one door room.

We know this Bill is wrong,
but no one is listening . As a free people we know Bull when we hear it. But the elites in power will do as they want while telling us they'll fix the method later. That's not going to happen. This is slippery slope and we all are skiing down it headed for a big o tree. I want off. The House
GOP should have more consideration on their plan. Paulson watched this unfold and we want to trust him and the Dem cohorts fix. God Help Us!

It's called check mate. The pres is on one side and McCain is with his base of support represented by the House GOP. President Bush is on the side of BIG business with the DEMS and McCain is looking out for the future of a nation.

2nd Amendment time!!
Constitutional convention anyone!? These poloticians have and continue to stray so far from the Constitution that I am begining to think about the need for "we the people" to take our country back by force. Having served as a Marine for 9 years I have seen what happens to citizens of a country who allow there governments to go to far. Their stripped of the ability to make "real change" by force when that was all that all they had left. I for one will not let that happen. I believe in the rule of law but when "they" use the law to oppress me I then believe in the way of the gun! The Constitution allows for us to literaly remove these socailists by force and return to a government for and by the people. The question is when is it time for such an action. Here is my anwser and it may be different for others. When they take food out of the mouths of my children its time, when they try to take my right to self determination away its time, when by their actions they force me into a life style that I did not choose to live its time. I can list others but I'm sure many of you are just like me in this line of thought. I've killed forgien enemies of the state in the name of the security of this nation and I certainly recall in my oath to protect and defend the constitution of the United States against ALL enemies both foriegn and Domestic. You poloticians are for warned, there is nothing more dangerous than a U.S. Marine determined to literaly fight for the security of his family and his counrty. Continue in your ways and you'll witness first hand how this nation was born, by the gun and sword!!

Shelly, Jeff
Shelly,

SPLAT!!! It only happens when honor is involved. The people responsible are Democrats. Don't hold your breath.

Jeff,

You should really expand your reading list.

Democrats are guilty of looting FM/FM and putting us into this position. Democrats are the ones who forced lenders to make loans to people who couldn't afford to pay them back. Democrats Raines and Johnson are you man-child messiah's financial advisors. They looted Fannie Mae to the tune of tens of millions. They live in taxpayer-subsidized mansions.

And Bush? There's a reason that Dems control the House and Senate, and it has nothing to do with Democrats. They ran on NOTHING in '06. The Dems didn't win, the GOP lost. The GOP lost because of all of the reasons Matt listed. Conservatives stayed home.

You're either ignorant, stupid, or a liar.

It's obvious
It's obvious whose fault this is: politically correct people's. The majority of them are socialists. They are also anarchists, Stalinists, Maoists, etc. etc.
Politically correct people always care about things anti-American: terrorist detainees, radical blacks, welfare queens, criminal's rights, Communist Cuba and Nicaragua, fascist Venezuela... They invite the repugnant Iranian President for a diner. To sum it all: they love Barak Obama.
Each time someone tells me he (she) likes Barak Obama I immediately know whom I'm dealing with. There are only two versions:
1. the person is an idiot;
2. the person is anti-American.

These are the people who support the bailout: Pellozi, Reid, Dodd, Shumer, Frank, Obama. Add a socialist leaning President and his incompetent cabinet members and you will have a complete picture.

The more government is guilty of complacency, the more it attempts to scare us. Why should we pay for the bureaucrats failures?

Imagine a private company manager who mismanaged thousands of dollars of company revenue. How long will he survive? No more than 30 minutes. But American government, including Democratic Congress and Republican President are still there. Moreover, they are "designing" a rescue plan with our tax dollars! No one resigns, no one is to blame. These people are truly INVINCIBLE!

Arrest First
There are Congressmen who used their weight and influence to force bad loans. There were bad laws passed and someone bought the votes, and lobbied for those laws. There needs to be an investigation first, followed by jail sentences, and serious considerations of sedition. Not one taxpayer dollar should be used for any bailout until the plotters against our country and our financial system are identified and incarcerated. Barney Franks and Chuck Schumer should be investigated soonest.
thumper writes: Friday, September, 26, 2008 5:52 PM
Now its time to act?
In recent years, there have been constant calls for tougher regulation to prevent Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae from cooking the books. The Dem's always blocked these efforts. Now when it comes to saving their political hides, its time to act and have the House Republicans bail Dem's out by givng them political cover for the fix? Give me a break! If the Dem's want a bad bill, let them pass it themselves and own up to who is at fault for this mess. The time to act was years ago, but the Democrats were too busy using their GSE creations as a political piggy bank. If the Democrats were not so culpable, Washington would be flooded with Congressional investigations spearheaded by Democrats.

another delusional dem, do you not know whos responsible for this mess, you idiot.Try doing some studing on your own, you will find mr clinton opened the door to bad loans to people with no money, and obama and frank and hillery and dodd took payoffs to keep REPUBS AND DEMS who werent on the take from stoping it,and right now the DEMS have total control, so pass the crap and die at the voting booth for doing it, the REPUBLICANS are not bailing you people out , they are protecting the tax payer, and will no matter what. And you sfow your ignorance for the PEOPLE make this country great, and the MILITARY protects our freedoms . not government you idiot. You have us confused with russia, which is where you need to go.Government hasnt won a war or defended crap, they MANAGE the different needs of this society, and ask US to FIGHT,to PAY , and TO sacrifice you moron, and then take all we do for granted and think we are idiots, but clearly thats your job.

Where've you been?
You people kill me. You sit back and let this buffoon eviscerate our civil liberties for 7 years and now - with our financial system on the verge of collapse - you notice that Bush thinks he's King? Where have Boehner and the boys been all this time? You're a little late to the party.

Having said that, anyone who states as fact that something other than a strong central government made this country great (and saved its bacon a few times - like at the beginning, at the Civil War, during the Depression...hello, read a history book lately) is either very misinformed or something worse.

This is not to endorse the massive bureaucracies of Nixon, Reagan, or Bush, but it is to support a necessarily coordinated approach to once again saving us from the greedy crooks who line Republican pockets and paternally watch out fr the rest of us until they go to jail or just bankrupt us.

Good plan, guys.

Mind Boggling "Audacity"
A real insult to our collective intelligence. (No matter how low it may be!)
Paulson, Dictator wannabe, would indeed be Wall Streets' "Hero" and, 4 months from now, would inevitably land a cushy CEO job there with one of the "saved" banks.
I applaud Mr.Boehner and the Republican base in the House for showing some backbone, finally! Hope they keep it up. Let the Dems pass this monstrousity and then let them be accountable for it.

I am
Extremely dissappointed with Bush's reaction.

Handing $700B, +the added Democratics add ons, out without reforming the root cause is a bad idea. Why would we want to feed the Banking industry more money to give out as bad loans, what kind of plan is that?

I am grateful that the House Republicans stood up to this.

horrah for BONHER
they,THE DEMS and OBAMA, tried to walk over bonher and as he said ,"that aint happening",and now maybe a decent bill will come out, and as he said, the dems have both houses and can pass what ever they want so go ahead, and bush will sign it seems, so do it, but when you do remember whos on the hook if it fails,no back door from it, and also realize the next ad you wil see, mccain may have voted with bush 90% of the time, but 100% of the dmes were on board for the biggest vote EVER in congress to date, and were with BUSH.So please just shut up and go away.We are really not the idiots you believe we are,and mccain and bonher and others will watch our backs, and if you want to yell that we stopped this, just PASS IT IDIOTS, its what you want to do then "JUST DO IT",your the smart ons who will show us the way to the promised land and your savior obama is the LEADER, so lead and ignore the repubs, we are just fools as you always are saying, "JUST DO IT" or SHUT UP .

Americans
should see the red warning flag in the power that could be ceded to Paulson "Decisions by the Secretary pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-renewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency." The last especially "may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency." To me that means including the Supreme Court on the constitutionality of this act. That's scary.
That's the reason for the rust to get it done,
so we won't be able to stop it before the dictatiorial powers are granted Paulson. Paulson
is a Wall Streeter..ya think?

I am with you home girl! I've had it with the crony capitalists and the beltway bolsheviks who look for the easy way out via their influence in DC. Like you, until I see their blood and guts splattered on the pavement of Wall Street, my instincts tell me their isn't really a crisis. They are just looking to pass on the costs of their bad decisions.

'W's apparently reflexive agreement with the leftist solution to this problem is very disturbing and disappointing. Why he didn't seek a market based solution reflexively, a la the conservative Reps, is revealing. He's like his dad, a Rockefeller Republican. Very disappointing.

RE: TBTF
The federal government has gotten too big for it's britches! It is time ot give control back over to the individual states - as the original concept of the constitution and the writers of such, wrote it to be. Capitolism has always had the premise of 'risk' involved; and the failing banks are reaping what they sowed by biting off more than they could chew. All the while, the executives of the banks remain untouched, financially. This is what happens when you borrow more than you can pay back - whether you are an individual or a conglomerate bank. People who have lost their homes, I pity them. But you cannot tell me they didn't see the writing on the wall when they knew they couldn't afford the homes they bought. This is what happened when you live beyond your means. I, among millions of americans, am not willingto pay the consequences for someone elses erroneous decisions.

Too big to fail.

You really need to keep your eye on the prize.

Citigroup has 3 trillion dollars in assets and now JP Morgan has 2 trillion dollars in assets.

This two banks are bigger than most countries and they are getting bigger.

The government should not be allowing these banks to consolidate. These banks are becoming too big to fail. They know it. Which means they can make all manner of future bad decisions and the government will have to bail them out.

It is time to put an end to "too big too fail".

It is time to put the genie back in the bottle and re-regulate banks back to being state only banks. Banks should never have been deregulated and allowed to cross state lines.

We need to go back to the days when backs could only operate in one state. Citibank, B of A and JP Morgan need to be trust busted. Americans cannot be held hostage again to banks which are too big to fail.
