Rudy's Red Sox Faux Pas

According to his detractors, Rudy Giuliani may be a pro-choice, pro-sanctuary city, gun-grabbing liberal Republican.
... But now he's really crossed the line!
By saying he's rooting for the Boston Red Sox in the World Series, Rudy has angered the New York press -- and probably many Yankee fans, across the nation.
Of course, logically, his support of the BoSox isn't that strange. His beloved Yankees are out of contention anyway -- and if he's a fan of the American League East -- why not root for the guys he's been watching on TV all year? Right?
Wrong.
He forgot that emotion is more important in politics than logic. And to die hard fans, rooting for the Red Sox is tantamount to treason. He also forgot the political maxim which says: "You can't make friends of your enemies by making enemies of your friends."
... Of course, it strikes me as revealing that people are seemingly more outraged by his support of the Red Sox than at his policy positions. I mean, with all the serious stuff happening in the world, should a political canddiate's support of one baseball team over another be worthy of a front-page story (granted, these are tabloids)?
The truth is that this is almost a perfect news story; It's timely and also serves as a lighter diversion from the disturbingly serious news coming out of California.
It's also true that baseball is very important to a lot of people. This sort of reminds me of a story about Brooklyn and the Great Depression.
... According to the tale, during the Depression, a fellow went on the street and yelled, "down with America!," and nobody said anything. He screamed, "Impeach Hoover!," and nobody raised an eyebrow. He then said, "The Brooklyn Dodgers stink!" -- and was promptly punched in the nose.
Baseball matters, is my point ...
From a political standpoint, this also looks bad. Rudy has criticized Hillary for being both a Cubs fan and a Yankees fan. While this is hardly as opportunistic as Hillary's changing allegiances, it does open the door to charges of baseball hypocrisy ...
I wonder what George Will thinks ...

Actually Rudy's defection to the Red Sox is just temporary--it's just part of his master plan to undercut Mitt Romney on his own turf. He feels he has to suck up New England voters first though he risks alienating voters in Colorado and New York. The things politicians do to get elected--they're all such whores. |
|
|
It didn't look very warm in Fenway last night--except for those RED SOX BATS!!! |
|
Don't worry; by then they'll be playing the Super Bowl on April Fools' Day
...and I think I speak for all Rockies fans on this Thursday morning when I say: "OUCH!"
|
|
Even more disturbing than Rudy's temporary defection to the Red Sox for the duration of the World Series is the World Series itself. Why is the "Fall Classic" now played so close to Thanksgiving? Why do greedy TV stations now schedule the Series at night when lots of bleary eyed fans have to go to work and school the next day and must miss crucial plays in later innings?
Some day the World Series and the Super Bowl are going to be played on the same day! Yikes! |

Harry Ried says global warming is responsible for the Colorado Rockies' streak. Now let's watch them warm up Fenway! posted 2:43pm MDT Wednesday, ROCKTOBER 24, 2007

Good point about the Yankees! |
|
"Glad hatred for the DH crosses political lines!" ...as does hatred for the NY Yankees!
|
|
There is a first time for everything! Glad hatred for the DH crosses political lines!
GO ROCKIES!!!!!!!!!!! |
|
...who holds this against Rudy is too stupid to be allowed to vote.
So, I suspect no Yankee fans will vote for Rudy, since we can't give poll tests any more. |
|
|
|
I hate the DH too; this is the first thing we've ever agreed on.
Guess thats as far as it goes -- GO RED SOX!!! |
|
With this incredible move, Rudy has managed to alienate BOTH yankee fans (who see him as a traitor), and Red Sox fans (who don't want his support).
I still think its funny you people think this guy is worth a cup of warm spit. |

I am SO disappointed in Rudy. I have been a big supporter, but I might have to rethink that position. How can he say that he is a life-long Yankees fan? As a Yankees fan myself I can say that any real Yankees fan would rather drink cyanide than root for the Red Sox. Disturbing!!! |
|
Someone should ask Hillary a real baseball question that true fans of their teams would know. I bet she would not even know that Yankee Stadium is in the Bronx. Or who made the error in game 5 of the 1985 National League Division Series that cost the Cubs the game and possible first trip to the World Series in a VERY long time.
Like to see how Hillary would answer the question "Who is she rooting for the in the 2007 World Series?" She probably does not even know who is playing
GO ROCKIES! |

Personally, Rudy is AGAINST Red Sox fans, but it's a matter of personal CHOICE, and it's OK if the fan's life is in political danger?
Where have I heard this before?

titaniczilla,
Bro, you are inaccurately conflating Rudy 'rooting for the Red Sox in the World Series' with Rudy 'being a Red Sox fan.'
They are not the same thing.
Rudy is NOT a Red Sox fan, but he is rooting for the Red Sox in the World Series because the Red Sox are from the American League East Division---the same division as his beloved Yankees.
Many people who watch the World Series or Super Bowl end up 'rooting' for one of the teams to win, but that doesn't mean they are a "fan" of that team. For example, I will be rooting for the Colorado Rockies, but I am NOT a 'fan' of the Rockies otherwise.
This is completely different from what Hillary has done. She was a Cubs fan her whole life, then she claimed she was 'always a Yankees fan' when she was running for Senate. And recently, when asked whom she would root for if the Cubs were to meet the Yanks in the World Series, she said she couldn't choose one over the other because she loves them both equally.
Again, Rudy is NOT a Red Sox fan.

Is this guy for real? Nearly half a million people are fleeing the out of control fires in Southern California and all this idiot can do is declare Rudy's defection to the d Red Sox in exchange for votes is a "lighter diversion from the disturbingly serious events in Southern California." Well I'm sorry if the tragedy in Southern California is interrupting your playtime, but somethings are a little more important than a bunch of grown men playing a kids game! Grow up already!!!! |
|
|
I remember all too well how Hillary Clinton was raked over the coals by team Guliani during her first Senate campaign when she declared that she'd always been a YANKEES FAN despite the fact that she grew up in Chicago. Now the worm has turned and it's Rudy's turn to pander for votes in New England so now he's become a RED SOX fan to the dismay of his die-hard Yankee fan base in New York. I just couldn't stop laughing at this ironic twist of events so all I have to say is LETS GO METS!!!! |

Matt Lewis,
A couple weeks ago, in your attempt to take a juvenile slap at both Dean and Hugh for their constant writing about the success of their favorite sports teams, you wrote; -------------------- "I try not to talk too much about sports here, but there was a "life lesson" to be taken from yesterday's Redskins/Packers game." --------------------
Yet, Matt, it seems that all you've done lately is talk about sports. Even during the GOP debate on Sunday nite, you not only live-blogged the debate...but at the same time you live-blogged the baseball playoff game, as well as a meaningless mid-season NFL game.
So don't pretend you're 'above' blogging about sports. We don't buy that anymore than we bought your silly protestations that you're not a John McCain supporter. |
|
Despite the fact that the National League is better than the junior ciruit--how can you call it baseball, when not everyone has to swing a bat?--as a lifelong Phillies fan, I cannot ever root for the Mets should they ever make it back to the Fall Classic, or for the *ugh* Braves. So, even though I hate the Yankees, too, I understand the outrage over Rudy's statement. Of course, I'd still vote for him.
And yes, RASHUM, Go Rockies! I'm with you there.
Hillary delenda est. |
|
Glad to find a fan of an American League team who hates the DH. Seems all the idiot Yankee fans like the rule.
As for "true baseball fans 1) hate the Yankees 2) hate the Red Sox" referring to fans who live outside NY and New England respectively.
GO ROCKIES!
|
|
|
Hey! I resent that! I'm a true baseball fan and I also hate the DH! You just can't ever cut the cord from the team that you grew up with. Unless your name is Rudy (Yankees) or Hillary (Cubs). They are so-o-o-o-o alike in so-o-o-o-o many ways. |
|
Bad enough he is a Yankees fan! But now to root for the Red Sox?!?!?!?!?! True baseball fans 1) hate the Yankees 2) hate the Red Sox 3) hate the DH.
GO ROCKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
|
|
You'd think being mayor of the freakin' city, he might have picked up on the small fact that Yankees and Red Sox fans hate each other's teams. |
|
|
I feel violated. So now Rudy has lost NY to Hillary as well as the 25% of Republican women who feel compelled to sympathize with a woman who has been violated by a man who can't be trusted to keep his pants zipped up. |
