Romney's Letter: Ban And Indict Ahmadinejad
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 2:02 AM
Iran's president routinely predicts the destruction of Israel in terms that can only be understood as advocacy of genocide.  He should be banned from the U.N.'s podium, and Mitt Romney has sent a letter to the U.N. to that effect.  Romney demands what ought to be automatic and obvious: The indictment of Ahmadinejad for the advocacy of genocide.  This is blunt but necessary talk, and all the presidential candidates should echo Romeny's call for resolute action now.  The text of Romney's letter:

To His Excellency Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon,

With the disturbing news that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmandinejad is planning to address the United Nations General Assembly next week, I call on the United Nations to revoke any invitation to President Ahmadinejad to address the General Assembly. The only way he should be greeted in the United States is with an indictment under the Genocide Convention.

The Iranian regime under President Ahmadinejad has spoken openly about wiping Israel off the map, has fueled Hezbollah’s terror campaign in the region and around the world, and defied the world community in its pursuit of nuclear weapons – capabilities that make these threats even more ominous. As General Petraeus testified last week, Iran is also supporting Shia militia extremists and violence that is taking the lives of American soldiers and undermining the Iraqi government.

A failure by the United Nations to take a strong stand against Iran’s President Ahmadinejad would be especially disturbing given the United Nations’ record of failure to prevent genocide in other circumstances and the failure of the United Nations Human Rights Council to confront the Iranian regime and others among the world’s worst human rights abusers. Failure to act would mean that the United States must reconsider its level of support and funding for the United Nations as we look to rebuild and revitalize effective international partnerships to meet 21st century threats.

If President Ahmadinejad sets foot in the United States, he should be handed an indictment under the Genocide Convention. This approach has been called for by experts as diverse as Nobel Prize Winner Elie Wiesel, human rights advocate and former Canadian Justice Minister Irwin Cotler, U.S. Ambassador John Bolton and law professor Alan Dershowitz.

The United States and the world must take a strong stand against the terrorist Iranian regime and the time for action is now.

Sincerely,

Mitt Romney

Scum, I thought your name was ironic?
Don't try to live up to it literally.

Where did I say that Iran was morally equivalent to Israel or us? I never did. Situations can be comparable without nations or morals being so. The USA and USSR were not morally equivalent at all - but that didn't change the fact that the reality of detente worked the same way for both of us. The same logic applies here.

If I point out that gravity works the same way in mainland China as it does in Taiwan, and I really asserting that China is just as free as Taiwan, for instance?

You guys are jokers
All of you that are saying Mitt's letter to the UN is worthless and say that Giuliani is a better candidate because he avoids them are freaking nuts. When another terrorist sympathizer tried to come to Mass. and get police protection Romney denied him that protection. He followed through. Guiliani and MCcain are going after Moveon.org and somehow that's a more noble thing than going after the UN? And that deserves more headlines than Mitt going after the UN? Whatever. We'd have more of a chance of booting the UN off of US shores with Mitt as a president than Guiliani and MCcain would trying to remove Moveon.org. I can't believe the lengths that you jokers go to to defame Romney. It's pathetic. In matters of importance moveon.org is at the top of "Guiliani and MCcain's" talking points? Romney write a letter denouncing the Iraninan President...you should re-read your posts, you sound like school girls. I guess Romney isn't invited to your sleep-over. I guess I cant come too, I'll cry myself to sleep over that one.

Romney's Grandstand
A letter like that is something Ron Paul or some other second-tier candidate who'll never get elected tries to do. It shouldn't be something someone with a chance to be president should commit to paper.

There's no question Ahmandinejad preaches genocide. I hope the US ambassador points this out with his five minutes or whatever time they're allotted, and ask the assembly why they would allow such a person on the world stage. Proposing a resolution to ban any future head of state for advocating genocide would be great, especially while the Iranian prez is getting his 15 minutes of global fame.

Romeny could have made any of those suggestions and sounded innovative. Instead, he sounds like a naif when it comes to international relations - not exactly how you want to look when running against Hillary.

Hugh, seriously, if Obama had said something like that you'd be all over him as a naive pretender who doesn't even understand the basics of diplomatic relations. I'm sorry, but Romney dealing with a bunch of sports NGOs is not the same as dealing with heads of state (although some of those IOC members do think they are living gods). This just opens him up to criticism, either now or in the general election if he makes it there.

In unreality....
..Mitts's letter to Moon is a secretly coded message promising him 12 wives if he helps Mitt get elected president. Moon responds that he already has a better offer from the Muslims, to which Mitt replies, "Yes....but are they blondes...?"
Meanwhile, Cat Stevens embarks upon his comeback tour. Unfortunately, during a rendition of "Peace Train," he utters the phrase "Ooh ah eeh ah ooh ah..." which is coincidentally the code for launching the Pakistani nukes. All but one turn out to be duds, and the one mistakenly heads for Tehran....

Arrest Ahmadinejad
Lock this Persian chimpanzee up in an NYC jail for making terroristic threats. We can say that the NYC patrolman forgot his "diplomatic immunity" training.

And after the sawed off goat violator Ahmadinejad goes a few rounds with the prison greeting party, he'll only be able to threaten genocide in a very high pitched voice.

No one is better than Team Mitt at holding a figer in the air and seeing which way the wind blows. I, for one, am impressed that the Flipper has decided that.... Ahmadinejad is bad!

As for you Drew, I wouldn't care a hoot if any of the other candidates you mentioned wrote such a letter, except maybe McCain (or Hunter, Brownback, Tancredo, or Paul, whom you left off your list). Why them? because as current members of Congress, they have the authority to speak for their constituents. Fred, Mitt and Rudy are private citizens now. There opinions on this issues might matter to voters next year, but they have no more authority than you or I in petitioning the UN.

What is the use of petitioning the UN, which
is an anti-American, ultraliberal, communist sounding board? It's our soil, and it's time to slam shut the UN doors, thus saving ourselves a lot of money and heartache. Until this country starts repudiating such base instituions, it's only committing slow suicide.

Eichendorff writes: "Romney is speaking to the voters, showing them how pathetically weak and spineless the UN organization really is."

Why doesn't Romney just tell the voters that the U.N. is weak and spineless, without going through this Ahmedinijad charade?

That's what Rudy Giuliani has done.
SteveL writes: Monday, September, 17, 2007 11:21 AM
What if?
Drew asks: "What if the signature at the end were replaced with Rudy's, Fred's or McCain's? How many of you who are blasting Mitt for this gesture would jump up in support of their respective candidate?"

As a Rudy supporter, I would be disappointed if Rudy suddenly decided to turn to the U.N. to act on any geopolitical crisis.

The U.N. is a collection of Third World petty tyrannies that are using the U.N. as a tool to squeeze the West.

Fortunately, Rudy has written an extensive position paper in the journal "Foreign Affairs" in which he said he doesn't expect anything further of any value from the U.N. anyway.

http://tinyurl.com/2huqpz

In a Rudy Giuliani administration, the U.N. will likely be left to twist slowly in the wind as it deserves to.

We'll take the Clinton approach, has the UN sits on their thumbs. We will "willingly suspend" our concern for humanity has innocent people are killed. We will "willingly suspend" the fact that, if we had forces on the ground to immediately take action, we would be an effective deterent.

__We all need to stand together, and defeat the evil that is acting to kill humanity. It kills with physical violence, and with means of physical oppression. Recognize it, and act responsibly, not the irresponsible actions of those securing self need.

You are absolutely right and Ahmadinejad is walking a very fine line. But he is walking that line. Unfortunately the widespread sentiment in the vast majority of the Arab and Muslim world is they want the state of Israel to end. Ahmadinejad is pandering to that with his statements about Israel being off the map. I take what Ahmadinejad says seriously, believe he would commit genocide if given half a chance, and I hope the U.S. and Israel take out the nuclear facilities in that country before he gets the chance to get a bomb. . .

but his statements are carefully tailored not to consitute genocide. I am all for banning him from the U.S. (he should not get a soap box at the U.N.) but we should keep our cards to our chests about going after Ahmadinejad personally.

I agree with you and Mitt that Ahmadinejad is a creep (and the enemy) and should be banned. . . but to indite someone for genocide, don't they have to commit genocide?

Since Rudy refused to meet with Yasser Arafat years ago, and Rudy managed to grab the headlines this week in attacking Hillary about the MoveOn.org add, it seems Mitt is trying to up the ante by asking for Ahmadinejad's inditement.

I am not coming down on Mitt for this, this is part of politics. I would rather hear Mitt's substantive plan for dealing with Ahmadinejad.

But Mitt is absolutely right on this one. What Ahmandinejad has said is in fact a punishable act under the UN Genocide Convention:

ARTICLE 3
The following acts shall be punishable:
(a) Genocide;
(b) Conspiracy to commit genocide;
(c) Direct and public incitement to commit genocide;
(d) Attempt to commit genocide;
(e) Complicity in genocide

Is what Ahmadinejad said a crime?
I am no fan of Ahmadinejad and would love nothing better than see him out of power (preferably because his own people threw him out), but to date he has not committed genocide. Now Ahmadinejad may be partially responsible for the what occurred between Hezbollah and Israel last year, and for assisting in attacks against US forces in Iraq, and he should pay severely for those offenses. . . but

While I take what he says seriously and believe if he could he would commit genocide against Israel if given the chance, he has not done so yet. I am a supporter of Israel and want Iran's nuclear program stopped, but I also know that 90% of the Arab world wishes Israel be destroyed. What we deem genocide talk from Ahmadinejad is commonly stated in coffee shops all over Egypt, Jordan, and other "moderate" Arab states. Are we going to arrest them all?
