Regarding Defamation of Religions
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 5:50 PM

As World Magazine has noted, Former U.S. Ambassador to the UN's Human Rights Commission, Ken Blackwell, delivered an excellent speech in Mexico City last week on “Defamation of Religions”.

Following is an excerpt:

The [Organisation of the Islamic Conference, a collection of 56 Muslim-majority countries that first proposed a "Defamation of Islam" UN resolution in 1999,]  has stated its main complaint is the stereotyping of Muslims around the world, especially post-9/11. Although the grievance of harmful stereotyping of Muslims as ideological extremists is sincere and factual, the current effort by the OIC to alleviate religious stereotyping with an international legal protection against the “defamation of religions” is misplaced and counter-productive. Conceptually, the claim of “defamation of religions” is inadequate as a legal cause of action. Traditional defamation laws are meant to protect individuals from false truth claims and do not extend to the protection of ideas, philosophies, or religions. Therefore, “defamation of religions” turns the purpose of defamation laws on its head. Human rights are also meant to protect individual persons only. Not only do “defamation of religions” laws fail to protect individuals, but they are also used to harass individuals. Unfortunately, the vague notion of “defamation of religions” laws allows government to use such laws to suppress minority religious individuals and voices of dissent.

The symposium was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty (for which a family member of mine now consults).

Blackwell has unfinished work
I wonder if Mr. Blackwell also opposes various "hate speech" laws in force throughout the West which are no doubt designed to stifle objections by indigenous peoples to their replacement by aliens in their homelands? If so, when shall we hear from him regarding? Not soon, I suspect. I'm most certain he is cognizant of the more than slight prospect of financial ruin if he did. Why ruin? Well now, it seems the desire of some to see European Man live and not die is a wee bit controversial. More controversial still, though absolutely essential, the children of Europe are not replaceable by the children of foreign lands.

Political religionists aren't off-limits
People use religion to make their political beliefs off limits to criticism. It's done in Islam, when the defenders of certain political acts decry anti-Muslim attitudes. It's done by some Israelis and its defenders, when criticism is labeled as anti-semitism instead of legitimate free speech. And it's done by many Catholics who want to ignore the pope's political role and merely see critics at anti-Catholic.

No one religion has a monopoly on this insidious behavior, meant in all three cases to stifle criticism of political actors in the name of religious tolerance.

@Molotov -
Where is Apollo incorrect in his statement, as regards Christians?

@coopmeister - You may have been taught that about the Catholic Church, and sincerely believe it, but you cannot compel me to believe it. Persuade me with the evidence to the point I draw the same conclusion you have, but under compulsion? No.

Unless Mother Mary is proven to have been of divine conception, she is unable to lay claim to deity. That is one concept that separates Catholics from Protestants/Evangelicals. The Hypostatic Union applies only to Christ.

Catholic Curch is One True Church
That's what I was taught.
You have a problem with that?

Apollo
"People have the right to believe anything they wish. They do not have the right to compel others to respect their beliefs."

You just lost the Christian right vote, my friend.

Blackwell's Got it Right
I never thought much of Ken Blackwell but this speech is first rate. He understands that ideas are always open to criticism but individuals have a right to retribution if they are libeled.

There is a big difference between saying that certain teachings of Islam inspire terrorism and saying that some particular muslim is a terrorist.

People have the right to believe anything they wish. They do not have the right to compel others to respect their beliefs.

Imagine if
Our country stereotyped the religious right and defamed them as gun-toting murderers of those they disagree with. In reality, this could happen because to a certain extent there is truth in that claim - at least as true as stereotyping Muslims as Islamofascist terrorists. Just saying.
