Settle-Up Sunday
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 9:37 AM

Didn't give yesterday because you forgot?  Slipped your mind?

You don't care about the conduct of the war or the future of the Supreme Court?

The president and Rove are confident, and it puzzles the MSMers who read their own copy.

Here's a clue: The Minneapolis Star Tribune's regular descent into polling madness shows Tim Pawlenty far behind his challenger in a result which causes Gopher State voters to guffaw at the Strib's transparent agenda journalism.

In short, many pollsters either tweak the results or don't know how to poll in the communications world in which we now live.  The Strib's "polls" are the worst of the lot --documented often by Powerline's Scott Johnson-- but there are bunches of bad ones out there.

So while it matters to take in all data, trust the party pros to know where to spend and follow their lead, which will take you to first to these four:

Burns for Senate.

DeWine for Senate.

Santorum for Senate.

Talent for Senate.

These are federal races with limits which is why your contributions matter here more than in a state race with different rules.

So quiet your conscience and dig deep for the final three weeks.

Democrats offered excellent presidential prospects in Al Gore and John Kerry. By any and every measure, except dirty campaigning and money raising, both were — and are — better qualified to be president than George W. Bush and (behind the green curtain) Dick Cheney are or will ever be.

True, Gore and Kerry weren't as good as they needed to be as candidates, although both racked up impressive second-place tallies.

Still, as events are demonstrating daily, we'd be better off being led by first-rate leaders who are second-rate campaigners than by the worst president in U.S. history who somehow had a better knack for raising money and votes.

Spare me my "political lean" is not letting me see the glass half full. I am not so myopic as to see the battle purely as the election. I do not vote Republican merely because I am loyal to the party. I vote Republican because I am loyal to the United States. So when I see Republicans losing their political advantage (to do good) due to mismanagement by Hastert (with the Foley mess that he absolutely knew about), or with racking up spending in a completely reckless manner (Reagan at least slowed discretionary spending), or endangering American service personnel and the overall mission in Iraq due to Rumsfeld's stubborness--yes it bothers me.

Fortunately for the Republicans, the Democrats are far worse. I sure do not want Hillary becoming President. I wish the Demcrats were better (and had better candidates)--becuase the competition would force the Republicans to be better too. I see politics not evolving but unraveling.

Do you say "LOL" in normal conversations? Just asking.

America's Anti-Reagan [...] is Santorum
Still think Santorum is a "true conservative"?

http://reason.com/rauch/090605.shtml

I don't want a collectivist State from the left based on "social justice" any more than I want a collectivist State from the right based on "family values".

Santorum can burgle turds from someone else's backside with his collectivist "family first" mumbo jumbo.

We're supposed to take your word that Democrats falsify polls. You offer no evidence, let alone proof. Next, you expect us to believe you are a mind reader who can tell others' intentions.

Finally, you predict the future for us.

Rich, you're a remarkable guy. I can't help but wonder why, considering your special gifts and abilities, you are writing comments on a blog, instead of enjoying your lottery winnings.

JOE resents?
"This is not the way to give Hillary a vacation"

LOL

Actually, this Nation is being painted Red, mostly because of the inept desires of Ms. Rodham and her liberal associates.

Joe, many of us Conservatives, voted for the GOP, to rebuke, or stop the liberal madness.

Nothing will ever trivialize the phrase "let's roll". And it remains quite appropriate.

Do you want a Democrat run Congress to order the closing of Gitmo?

The reality is, the Liberal Democrats have shown the most unethical undermining of this fine Country for personal political gain. They must be rebuked, period.

Frustrations with your personal objections (while understood), become petty in the context of the vast challenge in the struggle against Radical Muslim Militants.

If you desire a strong defense of this fine Country, the choice is clear. The Republicans have some impressive efforts in the GWOT to be commended.

We all want more, nothing is ever perfect, but it doesn't mean anything, in relation to what needs to be accomplished this NOV.

The glass is half full, and you cannot see it, or maybe your political lean is not allowing you to...

Encouraging a policy you desire, takes time, resolve, patience. President Reagan is a fine example. Republicans have listened to their base repeatedly when we weren't happy, and we can continue to press them for positive Conservative change.

But don't forget the endless positives, again:

Tax Relief, Tort Reform, Bankruptcy Reform, Conservative Judicial Nominations including Alito, Brown, Roberts, etc., reductions in Discretionary Spending, rejecting KYOTO, rejecting INTERNATIONAL COURTS, strengthening our Military including substantial pay increases, the PATRIOT ACT, breaking the Gorelick Wall, battled the UN, crushing Terrorists in the GWOT, never appeasing North Korea-Iran-Iraq, creating competition in Medicare (which will reduce our burden-cost of intensive care-the aging populace), TESTING in Education-providing needed standards-guage on the already massive investment, etc, etc...

Is Zarqawi dead?

YES...

Do you support a retreat from the GWOT?

No?

time to vote...

Democrat Polls
The DemocRATS falsify their polls intentionally. Remember what those dimwits did after Kerry lost? They claimed GOP voter fraud because according to THEIR polls Kerry should have won by a landslide.

You just watch, they will pull the same thing again!

Santorum is done
No amount of polling inaccuracies can explain away Santorum's consistent double digit deficits, don't waste any money on him. The rest on that list (Talent, DeWine and Burns) are all in better positions, with Talent having the greatest chance of holding his seat.

Why is so much money needed
Last I heard, Republicans had amassed more than $60 million for this election. Then, President Bush went out to one event and brought in another $800,000.

There's an old saying, "Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your doorstep."

If these Republican senators and representatives were doing a good job for the people, honestly, decently and delivering good results, people would be happy to vote for them in overwhelming numbers, wouldn't they?

The truth is that Republicans again have to buy expensive propaganda and diseeminate it at saturation levels for weeks in an effort to make people disregard what they know to be true.

Will hype triumph over truth and good sense again? Time will tell.

It isn't very pretty
Only races looking "good" for Republicans are AR and CT (and while Lieberman is a good man he is still essentially a Democrat and will be welcomed back to the fold if he wins).

Allen is holding VA.

TN is tied, with Ford slightly ahead.

The rest of the races are either statistically tied tilting Democrat or the Democrats are running away with it. I think Repubicans will hold a majority--but it will be close.

Thanks to Bob's inspiration I just went and buttered Santorum's and Talent's bread with a $200 contribution each.

Thanks, Bob.

Stop by for a visit on November 8th. Maybe we'll have some extra butter left over for the Democrats.

Let's Roll
I take that hole in the ground in NYC very seriously as I also do those passengers fought back on Flight 93. What I resent is the thinking that saying "Let's Roll" will make me jump up and send a $100 to Rick Santorum's reelection campaign. It trivializes the phrase.

Because I know how important judicial nominees are--I want the GOP to keep the Senate. And while I give Karl Rove credit for engineering some amazing political success--we ultimately supported the GOP because of what it promised to deliver. The GOP has gradually started to lose its purported ideals to the point that it is more about engineering another political victory than acheiving substantive conservative policy goals.

That is very dangerous not only to the GOP but for this country (because the Democrats are even worse).

Heck no I don't prefer the idea of a Speaker Pelosi--but there is no reason the House should be in play. It's in play due to poor political decisions by the GOP leadership.

I am not voting Democrat, but the GOP needs to get back to its core conservative roots. Yes the Administration accomplished many great things--tax relief, judicial appointments, and the GWOT being the most important.

It also greatly expanded government and discretionary spending, expanded Medicare entitlements, fumbled the Iraq occupation, and totlly failed to grappel with illegal immigration. The GOP should be doing far better. If that makes me a liberal for demanding that from the GOP, so be it.
Bob writes: Sunday, October, 15, 2006 7:19 PM

Better yet, LET'S BUTTER THAT ROLL...

because with the GOP being toast, Lord knows they're going to need all that butter. Toast without butter just isn't edible.

More debasing from Joe...
"But hey--Karl Rove is good with this (just like he was good with Foley running again)."

LOL

this is truly tiresome...

Karl Rove is a mighty fine Conservative, who helped engineer campaigns which stopped Gore, Kerry, and kept the House and Senate in Republican hands...

So thankful for this man...

or do you prefer Pelosi?
HNAV writes: Sunday, October, 15, 2006 6:45 PM
NONSENSE?
HEHEHE JOE...

LET'S ROLL !

when you call someone else's expression nonsense, it will be remembered...

no one is asking you to read it...

you can have your opinion, but here in NYC, when i pass by that giant hole in the ground, where the WTC used to stand, i become very serious.

the GWOT is essential, and the Democrat Party is a disaster, waiting to surrender.

nothing 'nonsense' about the Democrat Party who wants to 'kill' the Patriot ACT, close Gitmo, abandon-surrender in Iraq, end the surveillance of Terrorists, give Radical Muslim Militants the same rights as US Citizens, etc., etc...

you want to buy into the self loathing, go right ahead, but don't call other poster's expression 'nonsense', especially when we are talking about winning the GWOT.

you are stuck on Meirs?

LOL

sorry, that doesn't sound like a real Conservative at all. sometimes, wimpy Liberals pretend to be something they are not, trying to undermine.

besides, we all should be pleased, the Republicans and this President listened to the base's desires and appointed Alito to the Court.

they did the same, with focusing on a border fence...

Democrats won't be listening to our suggestions.

"Reynolds is right--the GOP has gone to the "but wer're better than the Democrats" well too many times."

LOL

but Joe, it is true, Repubs believe in tax cuts, strong defense, and Conservative Judges.

if you cannot distinguish between Republicans and Democrats, you are either not paying attention, or you are a Democrat trying to undermine...

Let's review some of the many positives Republicans have advocated for, and accomplished:

Serious Tax Relief, Tort Reform, Bankruptcy Reform, Conservative Judicial Nominations including Alito, Brown, Roberts, etc., reductions in Discretionary Spending, rejecting KYOTO, rejecting INTERNATIONAL COURTS, strengthening our Military including substantial pay increases, the PATRIOT ACT, breaking the Gorelick Wall, battled the UN, crushing Terrorists in the GWOT, never appeasing North Korea-Iran-Iraq, creating competition in Medicare (which will reduce our burden-cost of intensive care-the aging populace), TESTING in Education-providing needed standards-guage on the already massive investment, etc, etc...

This President was the first to seriously try to reform Social Security.

Not too shabby, especially knowing Democrats would do the exact opposite...

Allowing the Democrats to gain influence, will greatly impair our ability to wage the GWOT.

Any real Conservative would not hold some self interest at this time, above the needs of this Country.

Time to defeat the Liberal Denial again.

LET's ROLL !

Vote GOP
http://www.majoritywatch.com/

Because GOP control of the House is definitely in jeopardy and the Senate is at risk (George Allen is starting to slip). But hey--Karl Rove is good with this (just like he was good with Foley running again).

Better races to support. . .
Corker deserves support. So does Kean Jr. I agree that Talent and DeWine need support too.

If you have extra money you could give it to Santorum, but I would rather give it to Mike McGavick.
Joe writes: Sunday, October, 15, 2006 4:57 PM
The GOP are children. . .
to continue to put up with this nonsense. And no, I am not nor would not vote Democrat to spite the Republicans (unless of course the Republican candidate was the worse choice from the Democrat). That does not happen very often.

No--my problem is not calling the Republican leadership on this stuff well before the election--when change can be done. Instead we have Karl Rove pressuring Foley to run for the good of the party. I don't expect purity, just competence. That means learning from mistakes. But you keep blindly cheering for the GOP until we end up losing the Presidency in 2008 and both houses. Because even the Democrats (as incompetent as they are) will eventually move just to right enough (in rhetoric) to seem to be a reasonable alternative to the Republicans (who are drifting gradually left). In the end, the country will suffer and that is what I care more about than the success of the GOP.
Patrick writes: Sunday, October, 15, 2006 4:40 PM
The GOP are not children
and "punishing" the Republican party by not voting for GOP candidates is like holding a gun to your own head and shouting,"Stop or I'll shoot!" You can have the Party of Purity or the Party of Better'n Them. I'll take the Better'n Thems because I want to live in a country that is better, not perfect. The Party of Purity can pat itself on the back and enjoy sitting out the next 30 years of policy making, or it can grow up, suck it up, and get used to the idea that politics is messy necessarily involves compromise and not always getting your way.
Joe writes: Sunday, October, 15, 2006 2:30 PM
Why not Kean Jr.?
I agree by the way with helping embattled Repubicans, but why are you not pushing Kean Jr. in New Jersey (who has a reasonably good chance of winning in a mostly blue state)?
Joe writes: Sunday, October, 15, 2006 2:27 PM
I love my children, but. . .
if my children act out I chastise them. Spare me the "let's roll" and painting the map red nonsense. I am sorry, but the current GOP leadership seems to take its base for granted and ignores its principals. I hope the GOP retains control of the Senate, but if fundamental change is not made this party will lose in 2008. While I know al Qaeda will never win--I fear we may pay a terrible price if we do not fight the GWOT more competently.

Yes President Bush made the right decisions on Afghanistan and Iraq. But the President allowed Rumsfeld and Cheney to screw up the occupation in Iraq for three years and endangered the mission. We could have done far better than we did. Now we are facing a choice of status quo (which is not working and doubtful of success) or abandonment (which is failure). If Henry Kissinger is saying that the only exit strategy is victory (which I fully agree with) why are we not acting that way?

But what really gauls me is how the GOP expanded Medicare entitlements, tried to give us Harriet Miers for SCOTUS (which Hugh fullty supported), ignores basic border security, continues to grow government.

But hey, who's worrying about that, can't let the Democrats take control. Guess what--this current strategy will backfire in 2008 and we will end up with President Clinton or Gore if it continues. Reynolds is right--the GOP has gone to the "but wer're better than the Democrats" well too many times. Part of that blame falls to the feet of Hugh Hewitt and others who have been unwilling to critize the party for its mistakes.
