My Last Football Post Until the Patriots Win on Sunday

Perhaps my favorite Red Sox memory is Game 6 against the Yanks in '04. I was flying home from Bandon Dunes in Oregon. I was distraught that I would be missing the game, but the pilot came to the rescue of me and the other desperate Red sox fans on board. Somehow, he kept finding radio stations that we could listen to the game on with our little headphone thingies.
We landed in the top of the 9th inning with the Sox leading 4-2 and had to deplane. All the bars at Boston’s Logan Airport were closed, but in the luggage recovery room there was a little 13" black and white TV with rabbit ears tuned into the game. About 40 very serious and anxious Red Sox fans crowded into that little room to watch the bottom of the 9th and see if the Red Sox could hold a two-run lead.
When former Red Sox benchwarmer Tony Clarke came up as the winning run with two outs and two on, I actually began to pray. My wife asked what I was doing. I told her that I just so badly wanted them to win just once that I was praying. She told me I was white as a ghost. When there were two strikes, announcer Jack Buck reminded us we were one strike away from forcing a Game 7. 40 people simultaneously groaned. Then Clarke struck out and we celebrated.
2003 was different. When the Sox lost because their manager had poor game management skills, it was deserved. Every observer of the organization knew Grady Little would be an incredible liability at crunch time. This was a weakness the organization tolerated, and every observer knew it could kill them. When his poor game management cost them Game 7 against the Yankees, it was almost poetic justice. I was distraught after Game 7 in '03, but it was nothing like the pain of '86 when the ball went through Buckner’s legs. That just wasn’t fair. The same thing would have held if Clarke’s anemic bat had somehow produced a three run homer; it just wouldn’t have been fair.
The Chargers organization tolerates juvenile things like the Lights Out dance. That bleeds over into narcissistic things like personal fouls. The lack of discipline manifests itself in a ton of mental errors. Having watched the game again two nights ago on the NFL Network (arguably the greatest human advance since the wheel), I was surprised at the incredible amount of stupid mistakes the Charger made that have been overlooked because there were so many other more glaring ones. For instance, the Patriots had the ball at the Charger 13 yard line with 14 seconds left in the first half. They would have one crack at the end zone before settling for the field goal. The Chargers promptly jumped offsides, which moved the ball up to the 8 and about doubled the chance of the Patriots getting a touchdown. Which they did.
The Chargers organization also tolerates a coach who does stupid things like going for it on 4th and 11 in the 1st quarter when it matters most. A challenge for the stats gurus out there - find out the last time an NFL team went for it on 4th and more than 10 in the first quarter in any NFL game, regular season or post-season. If the Chargers had been able to overcome these weaknesses and win a championship, it would have been a minor miracle.
These guys are the reincarnation of the Any Given Sunday Pats of the 1970's who were the most talented team in the league for five straight years and yet still never managed to win a playoff game. I know how those teams broke my young heart, so in spite of all the fun I’ve had with Chargers fans this week, I feel your pain.
Now, the time has come for us all to focus on the real enemy of everyone who loves football – Peyton Manning. The crazy kids at the super blog Kissing Suzy Kolber have posted a hilarious video of Peyton which reminds everyone of the moral necessity of Peyton Manning being defeated. Follow the link and scroll to the bottom of the post.
(For those of you who have never read the Kissing Suzy Kolber blog, a strong content warning is in order, especially if you read the comments.)
Lastly, for those of you who think my football writing has been useless, here’s one factoid that everyone will find interesting. The Boston Herald took one of those online polls earlier in the week asking who would win on Sunday, the Patriots or Colts. 88% of respondents went with the Pats. The Indianapolis Star is running a similar poll. 66% or respondents choose the Pats.
What do these poll results mean? Discuss amongst yourselves.

Yep, the Chargers shot themselves in the foot over and over again. Another infamous moment was the personal foul call that kept a Patriots drive alive.
The Colts are hard to root for--sneaking out of town--this the team of Johnny U and the other throwback hard hats, vile.
I still say Brady reminds me of Star.
Pats have the better coach and quarterback, and defense, and running backs. Colts have better receives, but then so do almost any other NFL team.
But really, I don't care who wins all that much; my dogs fought to form as usual: Bills, Lions, Cardinals. My city, you might have heard, doesn't have a pro team. Our Metro area of course has two of everything else--go figure--even two major universities.
So I take it back, I can't root for the Colts, and I expect the Pats to win, and then they will meet the Chargers' revenge in the form of Brees, Bush and company.
Ha!

C'mon man, do you have to link to garbage like that?
Anyway, Pats all the way. |
|
Is Dave Stewart beating Roger Clemens over and over again. I especially enjoyed game 4, 1990 ALCS when Clemens, knowing he was beat again, had a tantrum to get himself ejected.
Football? Who cares? Pitchers and catchers report in about 4 weeks! Go A's!!! |

I should have said "frustrate" not "exacerbate". I should have known better than to mix pedantry with my religious zealotry. |
|

Lee Trevino used to exacerbate officials by being slow to leave the course when play was halted due to lightening. He would hold his two-iron over his head and exclaim "Even GOD can't hit a two-iron!". Then he was struck by lightening. True story. Now they call him "Speedy". A cautionary tale for you blasphemers who trash God's team. Repent before it's too late! I predict the Pats will pull it out in the final seconds with a 90-yard field goal. Talk about God tormenting Manning! That's pretty much how Clemens felt in 1985. |

the pats, great :)
That means Peyton will finally get to the Super Bowl |

Perceptive!
Buckner should've had his glove on the BoSox bench floor when Wilson came up to bat. The idiotic BoSox manager came up with his world class idiotic excuse after the game cuz he was too darned dumb to make the smart move. What could have beat the BoSox was poor defense and that's what the Bosox gave to their fans.
I'm surprised that Boston didn't lynch Buckner afterwards and blame it on the Babe and the Yankees. Of course, what can anyone rationally expect from people who continually elect the Short Distance Swimmer and the Cambodia Kid back into orifice; possibly excusing DB and his crew?
When the Pats lose this weekend, what excuse will the faithful BoPat fans have? Will it be by a missed FG? Maybe Buckner did it, eh!

Must be something about Boston. |
|
...was on October 7, 2005, the day I got married... ...and the day the WHITE SOX beat the Red Sox to move on to the next round, and ultimately to the World Series.
(Always new the ChiSox would win it all the moment I left Chicago.)

Start talking about the Patriots and the conversation inevitably goes back to the BoSoxs and the Yankees. They are imprinted like baby ducks (who see some other object other than their mother) on the subject. They will blindly follow that meme whereever it leads.
The Pats just acheived a great upset over San Diego. Response--Buckner should have had his glove to the ground! The Pats have a shot at the Super Bowl. Response--Bucky F'n Dent! |
|
I'll always hate the Patriots for taking New England's largest Sh!!!!!t on the city of Hartford in 1999. Go Colts.

He didn't boot that ball because of his injury. He should've had his butt down, glove on the ground. Buckner carried the Sox for a big part of the season and was a clutch player. Hard to take him out. Just like Rose on Cincinnatti. Intangibles matter. Problem is that fundamentals matter too. Sox lost because God hates Roger Clemens more than we do. Even more than He hates Manning. |
|
"This is a matchup of the two worst quarterbacks left in the playoffs. "
Brady and Manning. Yeah, those guys suck. You know two other guys that really sucked: Elway and Montana. Horrible. Absolutely horrible.
That kid from Chicago, he's much better than Brady or Manning. Yeah. Right.
LOL! |

but Doug, part of sports fanaticism is ignoring common sense and facts. Arguing sports is for fun and not for conclusion. It's sorta like baseball, we all know that rules are skirted and folks make bad calls but since we all know that then we know how the game is gonna be played. I don't take it that seriously any more.
But since we're on the subject of "truths" let me stir it up:
Hagler beat Leonard
Laetner shoulda been thrown out for unsportsmanlike conduct for stomping on Aminu Timberlake in UK-Duke classic '92
Everyone knows that Franco picked that ball up off the ground
|
|
So, some idiotic BoSox fans are still blaming injured Bill Buckner for being left in the game, for offensive reasons, when his leg was hurting and he didn't have any range left in him. But, NO, that's Ok to BoSox fans cuz their darling team manager is let skate because it must have been Bill B's fault that he couldn't move; he could still "hit!"
One of the reasons I knew back then that the Babe's curse was justified was because the BoSox blamed their woes on anything except themselves. Their manager back then didn't understand how to manage his team but it's got to be blamed on the injured player. So, the team got smart recently and won when it should have and the curse was lifted. Only problem is the curse never existed, it was all that terminally dumb BoSox idiocy that did them in season after season. Big deal except that those silly BoSox fans are still stuck on silly reasons for losing in '86!
Go figure! Maybe it's the Tuna in their former diet!

The Pats are God's team. They defy analysis because God always gets what He wants. After the Pats win this Sunday (God HATES Manning too), those of you who doubt God will have two weeks to atone for your wicked sin. Luckily, there are two weeks between Sunday and the Super Bowl which is just enough time to stick in a novena. Let's hope God is merciful. I know I wouldn't be. |

Good thing Mae West was the the cart girl or she would have said"
Is that a golf ball in your pocket or are you just glad to see me. |

Dean,
Maddog is absolutely correct; Marty Schottenheimer did not make that 4th & 11 call in the first half, it was the call of offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. In fact, Marty has been very explicit the past several weeks that he's trusting his offensive coordinator & defensive coordinator to handle the play-to-play calls. By the way, if the play had worked, he'd be labeled a genius. That's the risk you take---sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
But isn't that the single most criticism of Marty as a coach---that he's been TOO disciplined over the years, particularly as a play-caller, and in dealing with players ??
However, in this particular game, some Chargers players imploded and committed stupid penalties, while other Chargers players dropped passes, fumbled punts, and fumbled interceptions.
Coaching is important, but ultimately, the players on the field must execute. The coach didn't drop all those passes or fumble the ball, or commit stupid penalties---the players did.
Dean, if I were a Patriots fan, I would not emulate basketball coach Phil Jackson, by investing my time in demeaning my vanquished opponent. After all, if you contend that the other team is merely a bunch of losers who are coached by a hack, then your victory isn't so much a product of heroism and superior play, as it is being the team in the right place at the right time---agreed ?
What you should be saying is "We just upset the team with the best record in the league." |

The polls don't matter, same with all of the Dems who oppose victory in Iraq. Remember: No one gave Florida a chance before they whipped OSU (or Boise State over OU). Beliczech doesn't wear a lame sweater vest, but that won't matter either. I agree with Pimpernal, Vinatieri wins it at the end.... |
|
If you had watched the game closely and paid attention in the pre-game, you'd have heard Marty wasn't going to get involved and he was going to let his Offensive and Defensive coodinators call the plays. He didn't have a headset with a mic during the whole game. Also, in the press conference after the game (I am sure it was available on NFL Network) he said, "Cam had a play for that(4th and 11) he thought would work". Throwing against Asante Samuel was a bad decision, especially considering the drops by Parker on previous plays.

Tough call but I think the Colts, and not just Manning, will triumph. The Colts defense has really stepped up against the rush. This will force Brady to pass more which leads to INTs. Colts are at home. And they have that guy, whatshisnameagain? Oh yeah. Vinatieri! All the Colts have to do is get to the Pats' 45:) This does wonders for a QB's confidence.
I'm a Bills fan so I don't have much truck in this one but as a football fan it will be terribly exciting. Brady is one of the greatest QBs ever. The Pats are a true team who overcome obstacles as Champions do. But why give up Vinatieri? This is just too delicious: you know he's gonna put the knife in the Pats' heart at the last second!
I think Peyton gets over the hump and has an efficient game. Colts 23 Pats 20 |
|
|
Nantz and Simms told me that Marty's main contribution to the Chargers on gameday was his game management. So I assumed that decisions like going for it on 4th and 11 was his value add. |
|
|
I would hate to see one of my favorite web writers humiliated along with the Pats, but you have chosen to make this inevitable. |
|

This is a matchup of the two worst quarterbacks left in the playoffs. Both Brady and Manning have played from spotty to awful this year in the tournament. Manning more so than Brady, but the SD game last week was pretty poor for old TB. He hasn't been the same since Weis hit the road, at least in the tournament. I have a hard time believing Manning will have a third disgusting game in a row. Plus, the Pats will pay for letting AV go. After getting tremendously lucky last week, the luck finally wears off in the Dome. However, Manning still can't win the big one as the best QB left in the playoffs, Drew Brees, carves up Indy in the SB. |
|
you admit what I said in your last football blog. It wasn't the Patriots heroics that beat the Chargers, it was the stupid mental errors of the Chargers that beat them! Afterall, three picks and 10 points in 56+ minutes is not something to write home about.
You also forgot to blast Bowah(sp) Jue for totally blowing the coverage on the Gaffney TD in the back of the endzone. Sheesh, I could've made that throw! The saviour for the Pats was the O-Line. They did a great job of shutting down Lights out and Shaun Phillips. The sack dance isn't the problem, the piling on and headbutting were. And jumping offsides the play before the Gaffney TD, that was ridiculous!
I think this is Peyton's year. The Colts are peaking at the right time, especially the defense, that didn't show up most of the season. If Tom Brady has a similar game as he had against San Diego, the Pats lose. It's near impossible to win a playoff game with 3 picks, unless the other team makes lots of stupid errors.
MD
P.S. Marty didn't make the 4th and 11 call, it was Cam Cameron. |
|
We may not be able to come together over the war, or religion or anything that appears in the newspapers.
But we can come together over our "loathing" of peyton manning and the not-from-baltimore colts.
GO PATS !!!!
:) |

Good luck to your team DB.
An old Jet fan here...
I think the Colts might have you this year.
Just as Hillary has cursed all of NY Sports since she wore the Yanks Cap and was sworn into the Senate.
Kerry and Kennedy have placed a deep, dark cloud over MASS.
Brady may overcome.
We shall see... |
