Selling Out a Movement to Get Elected?

Bob Herbert's NY Times column today proves some liberals are upset with Obama's shifting positions:
"Only an idiot would think or hope that a politician going through the crucible of a presidential campaign could hold fast to every position, steer clear of the stumbling blocks of nuance and never make a mistake. But Barack Obama went out of his way to create the impression that he was a new kind of political leader — more honest, less cynical and less relentlessly calculating than most.
...
This is why so many of Senator Obama’s strongest supporters are uneasy, upset, dismayed and even angry at the candidate who is now emerging in the bright light of summer.
One issue or another might not have made much difference. Tacking toward the center in a general election is as common as kissing babies in a campaign, and lord knows the Democrats need to expand their coalition.
But Senator Obama is not just tacking gently toward the center. He’s lurching right when it suits him, and he’s zigging with the kind of reckless abandon that’s guaranteed to cause disillusion, if not whiplash."
Clearly, Barack Obama is upsetting some members of his base by changing positions. Perhaps the most damaging aspect of this is how it will likely demoralize some of his idealistic young supporters, who actually believed he was a "new brand" of politician. But my guess is that after eight years of Bush, most Democrats want victory so bad that most of them will overlook Obama's shifting positions -- even though it goes to the heart of his very raison d'etre.
And clearly, moderates and independents will be more comfortable with Obama the further to the center he comes.
As such, it is reasonable to conclude that Obama's shifting positions (when it results in his becoming more conservative) will make him more electable -- not less.
I would argue that this is true. But the question is; does Obama merely want to get elected -- or does he want to lead a movement? Because in becoming more electable, he also risks becoming less transformative.
Ronald Reagan's communications skills helped get him elected, but it was the fact that he truly believed in things that gave him an enduring appeal. Bill Clinton's triangulation helped him get elected twice, but left him without much of a positive legacy. The interesting thing is that Obama clearly knows this, based on his "controversial" acknowledgement that: "Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America ... in a way that Bill Clinton did not."
Barack Obama may get elected by shifting his positions, but it will be a temporal sort of success...

Getting Obama elected is all that matters. Obama's problem is that if you compare the political spectrum to a football field, Obama is by nature positioned at about the 10- or 15-yard line on the left. By comparison, McCain's probably on the 40-yard line of the right.
Obama easily gets the votes of those to the left of him and of those who are 15 or so yards to the right of him. But to ensure victory he needs another 15 to 20 yards more to the right. Thus, we're seeing all these hard turns to the right.
There's no question Obama is lying to the last group of voters, trying to persuade him that he's palatable. It's imperative that McCain and his campaign paint Obama back into the unacceptably liberal corner where Obama has always been.
All the agonizing being expressed on the left is nonsense. Obama's simply turning a different shade to get elected. He'll recapture his true color after he's elected: hard-left liberal.

I certainly hope Obama is indeed all the things you people fear: a shrewd, calculating politican who will do exactly what is needed to get elected! |
|
who is staying true to his beliefs. From the looks of it, Obama is willing to change his beliefs with ease. His supporters (evwen Move On and the like) display their true characters as well. They demonstrate they are not about principles but about power. If they were about principles, they would support Ralph Nader.
Nader is so much more genuine than "Empty Suit" Obama there should be no question about who truly represents the left. |
|
and principled leader of the American left. Reject Obama as the pretender he is. |
|
|
and yes there are some idiots out there but also very young and inexperienced supporters who just started paying attention to politics yesterday. If he continues to do as Ex-Pat suggested, we are left wondering who this guy will be once he is in the White House. That, my friends, is a scary proposition. So you'd rather forgo the devil you know for the devil you don't know? It's that "winning is everything" attitude that has ruined our political system. Both of these parties live to outdo the other and win at all cost, no matter what it takes and putting country before pride means absolutely nothing. |

Obama is abandoning maybe 12-15% of his voters to secure the big middle. McCain abandoned 60% of his voters to make room for someone but who? He's been floundering in the middle ground for weeks when he should have been securing his base and trying to pin Obama on the left. He chose instead to keep throwing people off of his bus and annoying conservatives. Now Obama is moving to the center as everyone knew he would and the McCain crowd is howling because he gaining the very ground McCain is standing on.
Dumbest. Campaign (and candidate?). Ever. |

Londongrl, did we know who W really was when he went in?
Did we know he would lead us into a pointless, counterproductive war that would make us less safe and kill thousands?
Did we know he would out spend every previous President?
Did we know he would blithely ignore our porous borders?
Did we know he would alienate every single ally we had?
Did we know he would urinate all over our Bill of Rights? |

...got other lefty neo kommies stirred up by pointing out some of their fuehrer/komissar's obvious weaknesses and flaws. Love to see their knee-jerk reactionism on display! Notice how these neo kommies always manage to show their BDS strewn with their predictable BS.
It's true, though, that if lefty neo kommies were capable of rational thought, they would see what a despicable POLITICIAN B. Hussein "Osama" Obama really is. He is anathema to all the dreams of left and right. He is all about B Hussein Uber Alles. |

You don't count if you are not a temporary resider. Newsflash....while you claim Bush has outspent every PResident, did you consider the defense budget during the war? Nope, I didn't think so. Also consider that Billy Jeff cut the military and threw away the peacetime dividends. I know it's hard for you leftminded folk to understand the tangibles vs. non. It's okay. Bush did the right thing and the left voted. We have not alienated anyone. The media just likes to perpetuate that, or haven't you noticed? I have been to Europe every year since 9/11 and I dare say, I have not felt any alientaion. GET.OVER.IT. On borders, Bush is wrong. Bill of Rights? Please. How about the SCOTUS and legislating from the bench and ignoring the Constitution. How about it Expat? You think the Kelo decision was correct? |

Obama will do whatever it takes to get elected. It really is that simple:
Bad news about his "uncle", pastor and spiritual mentor of 20 years? Disown him.
People still questioning his involvement with a race-baiting church? Remove his membership.
Getting heat about your past relationships with criminal landlords (Rezko) and US Terrorists (Ayers)? Downplay the truth, say you were acquaintences.
Need the beat Hillary? Condemn our soldiers' efforts in Iraq, promise to filibuster FISA, promise to participate in Campaign Finance, etc.
Need to win independents? backtrack on Iraq, vote for FISA, call past statements "inartful".
Obama can disown his grandmother, pastor, land-partners, cozy contributors - but he can't disown his biggest problem - himself. |
|
Independents will not buy the Obama shifts simply because he never explains why he shifted he just says that this "new" moderate position was his position all along ... basically he lies about it and everyone can see that ...
When McCain shifted on taxes and drilling he gave reasonable logical reasons for the shift and he admitted he WAS shifting ... no lie about past positions like Obama ...
Basically independents and moderates will not trust Obama ... |
|
|
he wants to get elected -- and he needs to move to the middle to do so, as does McCain. |

Don't you guys on the extreme left ever get tired of using the same old spew? Pointless & counter productive war...according to who? spineless Lefties? How about releasing an entire Nation from the grips of a Maniacal Dick-tator. It takes time, money & yes, the sacrifice of brave Volunteer soldiers. You guys always use the "alienate" card. America has been hated by the entire Middle East (except Israel)long before this war, they as well as America have had a love-hate relationship, sometimes you have to allie with the lessor of two "evils" to accomplish certain goals, just as we did in the 70's, 80's with Iran, Iraq, etc. The problem is, the left does'nt understand how you have to "plant" the seeds of Freedom, it takes years for the "fruit" to be realized, but it's worth the cost. the Left has a "drive-thru" mentality when it comes to the daunting task of confronting those who would cut a Liberal's head off just as fast as they would do to one of their own. We in America have always had Freedom from day one, the Left can't comprehend the neccessity to bring Freedom to those who have been denied it from birth, there is no cost great enough to render it useless. "fight the good fight" is the old saying...And the Bill of Rights?....unless you have something to hide, don't lose any sleep, I doubt if our "evil" government is spending that much time trying to nail you! |

I hope that Obama continues to lie about his positions as he attempts to maneuver his political positions toward the middle. It will not win him independent voters, as McCain will secure those votes quite easily. All it will do is cause him to lose his "groupy" votes as they observe that he is really SOS (same old stuff). Also, remember that the voters in the baby boom generation still occupy the majority of the American voting public and far outnumber the younger generation of voters. I pay attention to what's going on in this country and I recognize Obama for the phony that he is. And, I have yet to meet any person in my middle class older generation who Obama inspires. The majority of them simply shake their heads in disgust at the mention of his name. |
|
The one sentence that he is contantly repeating is:
"My position has always been..Blah blah blah" when all it takes is a rerun of his last speech to make him a liar.
He is always changing his mind...This must be the change he is talking about?
