Bill Clinton Opposed Iraq from the Beginning?
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 8:54 AM
The RNC says "nein" to that one:
"He has not clearly opposed the war from the start," said Republican National Committee spokesman Danny Diaz Tuesday. "Like his wife, the former president has been critical of the Iraq war in recent months, but at one time he gave President Bush the benefit of the doubt."
But more importantly, isn't this just another instance of Big Bill's big ol' ego undoing years of political parsing and careful statements from his wife? She's worked so hard to get voters who haven't been paying a lot of attention to the point where they can pick literally any Iraq position out of a hat and convince themselves she's had it at some point and may still. And, Bill comes along, grabs the political tightrope she's walking and just shakes the ever-lovin' hell out of it, fueling a day or two of negative coverage. Nice going.

Ambinder adds:
Mr. President -- your wife is going to be in Iowa tomorrow. She is supposed to talk about health care. You don't want to step on her message by claiming that you opposed the Iraq War from the beginning! We're in the era of instantaneous fact checks... within 10 minutes of your comments, they're everywhere, and if you want to walk them back, it's not like calling Ron Fournier to walk back an AP story!
Well, the repeated Bubba snafus seem to answer the question of who will be more powerful on the trail: Oprah or the Man from Hope?

Update: Chuck Todd on MSNBC:
This is the second time. Three weeks ago, the last time he was on the trail, he made a comment. It seemed to be an offhand comment, you know, that the health care was his fault in 1993, that the failure of health care reform was his fault, not her fault and she shouldn't get the blame. And a lot of folks said, wait, wait, isn't he rewriting history?

Yesterday, he goes out and in his first speech says he always opposed this iraq war. And the Clinton folks feel there's plenty of support to show he was not in favor of an invasion and what was interesting, our field reporter out there said that later at a later stop yesterday, he dropped the always opposed and instead started saying opposes this iraq war a little bit.

So, trying to change things a little, realizing he may have started a firestorm. And it could have been a slip of the tongue or said something not in the way he meant to say it. It doesn't matter.

This is the double-edged sword of Bill Clinton. Everybody listens to what he says. That's what makes him a good surrogate for Hillary Clinton, but sometimes a distraction for her is that everybody listens to what he says, including reporters.
Update: And, a note on the context of this remark, which was in a discussion of war spending and tax cuts for the rich:
"That'll require people like me, who got five tax cuts that I should not have gotten, in my income group, when we had soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. Even though I approved of Afghanistan and opposed Iraq from the beginning, I still resent that I was not asked or given the opportunity to support those soldiers."
The liberal view of ways to "support soldiers" (and charity in general) is severely limited, in this case relegated to the magnanimous act of having taxes levied upon you involuntarily. Is he really unaware that he has literally thousands of opportunities to support "those soldiers" with his money every single day? Pony up for VALOUR-IT, Bill. We'll gladly take your money for our wounded troops, but you have to give it voluntarily. I know it's rough not being compelled by government to help others, but I think you'll like it. Didn't you write a book on that?

SUPPORT WHO
Yea he suported the troops so much when he was PRESIDENT that he laid about half of our military just to cut the DEFICET in half. Now thats alot of unemployment to go untold. The DEMS never had and never will support the troops like they claim. They can bash this President all day about the deaths of American troops but sit by idly and kill unborn babies with no problem. No thats what I call ALL AMERICAN LIARS.
Im waiting for the day when the DEMS get a real leader with balls to come out and admit they do not support the troops/killers(DEMS IDEOLOGY). But have no problem killing unborn babies.

Bill-ary
This is the quintessential Bill, with the Ball & Chain (not a fitness step) giving us another reason to despise not only their politics, but their personal, ethical values.

An ex-wife supports the Clintons, and has since they first came up on the radar. Of course, she's a Blind Democrat (doesn't matter who you throw up there, just so its a Democrat), so you'd expect that. She doesn't see Hillary's waffling on every important topic as anything more than political adroitness.

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...
Clay writes: Thursday, November, 29, 2007 6:10 AM
Brilliant Post Mary Katharine !!!
The only consistant thing about the Clintons is that they consistantly contradict themselves. Years ago I thought people would tire of pointing out the lies but I thing we're all driven to make light of them as long as they appear to get away with it.

Bill (Me, I, Me, Me) Clinton's ego will never let him be a graceful former President.

Is she really the best?
If you just keep saying the same thing over and over again, sooner or later people will believe it... no matter if it's true or not. Hillary has been doing the same for months now.

I guess maybe Bill's is thinking that it depends on what the definition of war is, is.

Honestly, why does anyone in the Democratic party support Hillary. She voted for the war, continues to fund it, dropped the ball in the leadership role when the democrats won congress, was on the board of directors of Walmart during the dirty days of union busting and increased imports from China.

If it weren't for Bill, she would be nothing but the junior senator from NY with 1.5 terms and nothing to show for it.

Is this really the person they can get behind? Hate Bush all you want. Just nominate someone you can believe in!

"I did not have sexual relations"
Here we go again, Mr. Clinton is the slickest of the slick. If you don't pay close attention to exactly what he says you may accuse him of lying when he actually only used some slippery wording. The truth is, Mr. Clinton is the best I have ever seen at picking your pocket, telling you he's doing it and making you smile about it. I love politicians, they make life fun.
SonOfTed writes: Wednesday, November, 28, 2007 6:51 PM
An additional suggestion:

MORE ways to support our soldiers.

Perhaps Senator Clinton (and the other 40 goofballs that signed the Rush Limbaugh) letter can contribute to his charity.

If they don't have enough bucks to match his 2 + 2 = 4 million plus contribution I guess I can understand that.

But their letter expressed genuine concern for our soldiers, so you'd think they would want to kick in something.

They are among the RICHEST Americans after all. Why should money that does good HAVE to come from taxes?
SonOfTed writes: Wednesday, November, 28, 2007 6:49 PM
Interesting sound bite!
"I still resent that I was not asked or given the opportunity to support those soldiers."

...
...
...

Hmmm... if former Pres. Clinton is SINCERE in his support of the soldiers, perhaps he should talk to his SENATOR wife and let her know that failing to pass war funding right at the time when we're WINNING is going to have long range consequences.

They may win in the short run, but then the Republicans have always been the ones who look out for America's long range interests.

Bill and Hillary
Bill and Hillary: a true match made in Hell. They are both exceptional liars who will say or do anything to capture the White House. Can you honestly imagine another 4 to 8 years of Clinton acrimony?

Bill not a pre-meditated liar
Jim,

Your right Bill isn't a pre-meditated liar....he is a sociopathic liar.

I particularly love his comment that "As the former President, noone gave me an opportunity to support the troops."

Awwwwwwwwwww, poor Bill. I guess a millionaire former President of the US doesn't have the ability to support the troops unless someone asks him.

Further proof that Bill will do anything to suck the air and the room and focus the attention on him.
jim b writes: Wednesday, November, 28, 2007 2:42 PM
Billy did what?
See that just proves he is innocent. Just like with that Monica kid.

Billy would never never tell a lie. Nope nope not one single lie ... a dozen maybe ... but not a single one.

When he gets on a roll he gets on a roll.

Yanno I honestly believe for a person to be a premeditated liar they must first know the truth.

Bill doesn't.

BILLY BOY
THe SCUDSTER was also involved with the DUBAI PORT project that Hitlery was raising hell about. That is why she made him disappear until the DUBAI Port deal was blown out of the water. NO THANKS TO THE SCUDSTER. If the American people are not tired of CLINTOONS and BUSHES then they deserve everything they get. We all know now that Iraq is inproving that the next step for the DEMS is to make up something else for the troops and the IRAQI government to do before they can recognise success in IRAQ. We know that they will come up with some bodacious lies when we win in IRAQ. What makes all this funny is that BILLY BOY is in the Middle East making Million dollar speeches to the same people that his DEM Party are accusing of being responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Now were is the justice?

Did he just pull a Kerry?
I was against the war before I was for the war, before I was against the war. It depends on the the meaning of "war".
Red-y for 2008 writes: Wednesday, November, 28, 2007 12:33 PM
Actually - I believe Bill...
Bill Clinton was offered Bin Laden on a silver platter - Bill refused.

Bill Clinton gutted our nation's intelligence community because he thought it distasteful we work (pay) some unsavory characters. Without human intelligence - on the ground - we were left in the dark... which ultimately contributed to 9/11.

Bill Clinton refused to stand up to Saddam Hussein. 12 UN Resolutions passed and routinely ignored by Saddam. Bill Clinton's response? Silence.

Bill Clinton applauded his wife's tea-party with Arrafat's wife while suicide-bombers were killing innocent Israeli women/children.

WHY oh why would Bill Clinton suddenly support any effort to uphold UN Resolutions, remove a brutal dictator, or take ANY action which might not poll favorably??

FOR ONCE - he's telling the truth!
Dread writes: Wednesday, November, 28, 2007 12:18 PM
Needless to say...
The fact that he made regime change in Iraq the policy of the United States kind of makes him pro-Iraq war and just as much an interventionist as any of the Republican cronies.

He's Right!
If that dastardly Sandy Burglar hadnt stolen the evidence BJ would be able to prove what he's saying is true.Everything the Clinton Crime Family says is true, and if lying pollsters like Zogby are going to play into the hands of Right-Wingers the more fool them. Retribution will fall on the unbelievers! A good way to 'get your mind right' is to read 1984 and gain control of your memory so you will be able to say, "Clinton opposes the war in Iraq, Clinton has always opposed the war in Iraq, Clinton will always oppose the war in Iraq." Then, a few weeks later, when the primaries are in the bag and Her Thighness needs to move to the right you can say, with equal conviction, "Clinton always thought we would win in Iraq, Clinton thinks his support enabled us to win in Iraq, Clinton won in Iraq."

Random react
Since I'm only thinking in terms of quick commentary rather than full-blown posts right now:

- Guess Desert Fox was all about trying to stop impeachment after all.
- With Clinton, it isn't "when his lips move", it's "when there's sound coming from his general direction".
- As is almost always the case with liberals, it's all about spending other people's money.
Tryor writes: Wednesday, November, 28, 2007 9:30 AM
An old joke
Bill Clinton reminds me of the joke about lawyers. How do you tell when they're lying? Their lips move.
