The Hill is reporting that Ed Rollins will take over Mike Huckabee's campaign as national chairman.
Rollins is remembered for managing Ronald Reagan's '84 campaign. Rollins may have managed it, but he did not "run" the incumbent president's re-election campaign, as the title might imply. The truth is that George Washington wouldn't have beaten Ronald Reagan in 1984, but Rollins deserves credit for winning 49 states (he claims in his excellent book Bare Knuckes and Back Rooms that he could have won Minnesota, too, had Nancy Reagan not diverted funds to California).
Rollins also was a co-manager for Ross Perot's disastrous campaign.
Most recently, Rollins has been a talking head on lots of cable news shows. He was also a top consultant for Katharine Harris' quixotic U.S. Senate race in Florida. After leaving the campaign, he gave numerous interviews to reporters, telling them precisely how out-of-touch she is, and how disastrous her campaign was. While this was all undoubtedly true, it's not common for an advisor to leave a campaign and then begin criticizing it.
Rollins' name brings Huckabee credibility, but that's about it. Rollins will probably make a lot of money from doing this race -- but I wouldn't over-estimate the impact he will have on the race.

Matt you are a genius, you should be running, so insightful.

I see TK is one of your favs.
Ed Rollins brings nothing to the table. Kinda like Huck!
Vote for Fred cause he ain't no RINO! |
|
Hows 'bout we all remember we are on the same side?
I think this is actually a big deal. I don't like Huck (as a candidate for POTUS, that is) but Ed Rollins brings alot of respectability to the candidate the establishment seems to have turned against. I doubt that Rollins has lightening in a bottle, but his presence alone helps counter Huck's label as an "unworthy" candidate. |

Are you pleased with Fred's performance during the Clinton impeachment?

On the other hand, if something else is not in the rules, but a Senator suddenly wants it to be, then they can make the rule and do what they want. Really, this committee of Senators, with Biden taking the lead, was saying, in effect: "We're going to tell you how we're operating, you're going to tell us nothing. This is the Senate, we run the show." It was almost an ultimatum, and obviously humiliating to the Managers-- appointed representatives of the House. The fact of the matter is that if the Senators had honestly wanted to shorten the process, they could have admitted witnesses' testimonies that were corroborated and leave it to the White House to challenge.
Meanwhile, through all of this, Fred Thompson was sitting in the corner with his head down. To my recollection, he didn't open his mouth. Stevens wasn't much better. He thought the Senate had better things to do. The reality was that we had no Republican friends in that room. The Democrats ran the whole show. In fact, it was a Democrat, Senator Lieberman, who asked the reasonable questions.

== That was it. Walking out with Hyde and Rogan, I said, "Would you believe it, the best friend we had in the room was Senator Lieberman?" They agreed. With friends like these Republicans, we didn't need enemies. == The next day, we were called to a meeting in Lott's conference room. We went over there flat-out, hat- in-hand begging to get the leadership's backing to put on the case, because up until then we had been clobbered. And not just by Democrats. The Republicans had simply been holding the Democrats' coats, just standing by, not doing shortcake. On our side were Rogan, Hutchinson, Bryant, and Hyde. On their side: Domenici, Stevens, [Fred] Thompson, Rod Grams of Minnesota, James Inhofe of Oklahoma, and Robert Bennett of Utah.
Hyde said: "Senator, we really are begging you to go to bat for us. We'd like to put some evidence on and live witnesses. The American people have not seen what we've got. All you've seen is the public documents." Domenici replied: "Henry, you know if we ask for too much, we'll get nothing. We have to be bipartisan on this." There was that word again. Bipartisan. As in, appeasement.

Yes Matt Lewis is openly biased like almost every other townhall blogger but why are you guys jumping on him for passing along a news story? |

All it took was a couple Bloody Marys before that 1992(?) National Press Club event to get Ed to spell out his wonderful plan to pay black ministers to ensure their congregations stay home instead of voting Democrat in NJ. Romney's folks now face a tough decision: a.) let Rollins do his own thing , bringing the Huckabee campaign to its demise without interference, inevitably but at a relatively slow pace, or b.) plant a few bottles of liquor in the right spots, mercifully putting Ed and the Gov out of their misery quickly. |

non-starter who could not meet with Romanic's fundraising standards so Hugh concluded is not a viable candidate. While still undecided, I am impressed with how Huckster has managed to do so much with so little money. Stupid statements have bought him the kind of press Mitt's money can't buy by giving him 2 for 1. Turn the issue into Romney's religion and get exposure for your campaign FREE. This exposure raises your numbers in IA (a state that was written off as Romney's) and this creates momentum into other early primary states. This type of scheming might just get this guy to beat Hillary. They both have managed to make "blunders" that generate lots of FREE press for themselves this week. |
