Jim DeMint on a Better Stimulus
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 10:03 AM
Hint: It's not rebates.
But an economy that is facing slumping home sales, a credit crisis and nose-diving markets will not be rescued by temporary cash handouts. History has taught us this lesson repeatedly.

Washington sent Americans $300 tax rebate checks in 2001, but the handouts did little for real economic growth and Congress went back to the drawing board. Instead of making the same mistake again, President Bush and Republicans pushed for pro-growth tax cuts in 2003.

In the wake of these 2003 tax cuts capital gains, income and dividend tax rates were lowered. This long-term tax relief gave individuals and businesses incentives to work hard, save and invest in the economy. The result was the creation of over 8 million new jobs, a significantly increased rate of growth for the GDP and a skyrocketing stock market.

DeMint in '12?
Is it too early?

WPA Part 2? No thanks, Nancy.
If memory serves, the original Works Progress Administration singularily failed in its stated goal of lifting the US out of the Great Depression.

Come on Joe
Are you trying to have it both ways, again? You say you agree with DeMint, but can't help but blast Romney for supporting the rebates. Didn't your guy McCain also support them. It seems I remember him being more enthusiatic about them than Mitt. Mitt's plan was more of a long term solution - see DeMint's statement. Mitt thought the rebate was better than doing nothing (which frankly I question) but he didn't seem nearly as enthusiastic as McCain.

Federal Spending with Muscle
How about - instead of building bridges to nowhere and office buildings for non-existent corporations - we fix our infrastructure and create jobs at the same time? It would not just be adding lanes to I-95 from Maine through Florida, it would be adding jobs for all the companies that support such activities. That was just one idea that Mike Huckabee supported and it makes a lot more sense that "bread and circuses" that Congress always seems to turn to.

I agree with DeMint on this
Of course his guy Mitt Romney is supporting the rebates (all the GOP candidates are because they do not want to undercut the President and who wants to say he is cutting the "rebate" to the voters in an election year)--a perfect storm for a cash give away unfortunately.

Hear! Hear!
I couldn't agree more. A Romney/DeMint ticket looks pretty attractive to me.
