Praying for a Safe Convention
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:01 PM
Four men have been arrested in what may have been a plot to try to assassinate Barack Obama.  Horrifying.

Obviously, all of us can disagree with every single wrongheaded and misguided idea emanating from the Denver convention center -- but as Americans, let's pray for the safety of Barack Obama, his family, and all those in attendance at the convention.

Let's beat Barack fair and square, and then be able to watch him lead a long and healthy life, together with his family.

True. I love it when people cry about the nastiness of politics. When has it ever not been nasty? Since Hamilton and Jefferson it has been nasty. Seriously, should we take out our copies of the Code Duello? Politics today is tame.
Craig writes: Tuesday, August, 26, 2008 12:46 AM
I disagree
Political discourse is about the same as it has always been. Previous eras had Joe McCarthey, the Weathermen, the Black Panthers and the militias.

There has been crazy people who want to assasinate the president since George Washington. The difference is, unlike the days when the president mingled freely (Watch the great John Adams miniseries. There is a scene where he leaves office along with his servants.) candidates receive much better protection.

Cut out the new negative times. Its the same as always.

Interesting how you talk about right wing hate and then say that Paddy is one "you kinda like." Does that mean you "kinda hate" the rest? Please step back for just a moment and relive the last 8 years of the Democratic "love" for President Bush. Please step back for the left wing "love" of Reagan. This is not a strictly left wing or right wing problem. It's a sick moron problem. Why does everything have to be brought back to partisanship? There are haters on both sides of the aisle and in between.

Thanks for the kindof compliment.

Let me suggest you go to Kos and Huffpo and tell me what you see there. I think you will find Townhall rather restrained after that.

I have to disagree (and you're one of the ones I knida like). Read the comments about Michelle on the top thread. Its not "I disagree" its "she's an America-hating witch." The level of personal vitriol against Obama here is very high, and it always ends up in the same accusation: they are treasonous and threat to the nation.

This is so silly and stupid its beyond the pale, but its the standard line amongst the right. Accusing someone of being treasonous and "ruining the country" is a call to arms, why are we suprised when violence ensues. Twice already this election season unhinged conservatives have killed (in a gay friendly church and at the Arkansas Democratic Offices).

The right paints people it disagrees with not as the respected opposition but as charactitures (god I can't spell right now) of imminent threats. They paint them as a "clear and present danger to the safety of the United States" and then act surprised when deragned people resort to violence.

We reap what we sow, and the right-wing attack on gays and those that disagree with them (like the Obama's) will inevitably lead to more death.

The solution is not censorship but a realization on BOTH sides that the rhetoric is out of control. McCain stated that Obama wants America to lose a war. This is an attack on his patriotism and an accusation of treason, an offense punishable by death. Right now there are unhinged conservatives dreaming of killing Senator Obama and his family, and the right is egging them on.

You are all idiots. Can you spare us your ugliness for a brief moment?
This is distructive as Americans.

I don't agree. The debate gets pretty spirited around here, but I certainly don't hate anybody. I don't speak for anyone else, but I don't think hate is what you have here.
This is actually the first I've heard of this episode, and obviously this is not something I condone. We are a nation of laws and part of the foundation of this country is the right to speak freely...so of course there will be disagreement. It is a civilized people that know where to draw the line on that disagreement, unlike the Muslim countries that will cut off your head if you speak against their religion.
I add my prayers for a safe TWO conventions, and I assure you there is no hate coming from me....not even for King Liberal....!

The right
has poisened public discourse. Its not enough to disagree with anyone anymore, you have to HATE them. This is the legacy of the past 16 years or so of right wing media.
animalgirl writes: Monday, August, 25, 2008 11:14 PM
Not surprising
And I bet he was a Hannity listener.

When you have people, all day, every day, saying that person is public enemy number one, saying that he is horrible and terrible and will destroy the country; when you have people who completely dehumanize the people who disagree with them. Shoot, Ann Coulter talks about launching a terrorist attack on the New York Times, and conservatives laugh.

We've already seen one conservative terrorist attack on a liberal church this season. If Obama wins, we are going to see a strong uptick in domestic terrorism. Conservatives don't like being out of power.

Watch out if you work in a federal building.

At what point is hate radio incitement?
