McCain's Staff Infection
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:14 AM

(Or is it staff defection?)

The more I think about it, the more I agree with Patrick Ruffini's comment yesterday, in which he said of McCain: "... he is a terrible candidate with a great staff."

Frankly, that's the reason I never believed McCain would fall this fast.  Because, despite his obvious problems, I knew he had some of the most talented staff in the business, and that still counts for a lot when it comes to the nuts-and-bolts stuff like identifying and turning out voters.

But the candidate is King, and that's the lesson that political operatives, pundits, and political insiders must keep reminding themselves.  Having a great staff is important, but they only affect things at the margins.  Operatives aren't magicians.  There are tricks of the trade they can employ to make a candidate look a little better than he is, but this is also contingent on having the candidate actually do what you tell him to do.

Just as football coaches and GMs can't score touchdowns, campaign managers and advisors don't win elections.  At the end of the day, it comes down to the players executing the plays.

Nobody votes for a campaign manager, they vote for a candidate.  And to paraphrase Yogi Berra, "If nobody wants to come to a ballgame, there's nothing you can do to stop them."  Or, in political terms: If people simply don't like your candidate, the best spin-meisters in the world will have a hard time changing that.

I recently attended a private event in which McCain and Romney both were guest speakers. At one point, someone in the audience threw John McCain a softball, which I think illustrates McCain's problem. The meeting was off-the-record, so I'm just paraphrasing here, but it went something like this:

Q: Senator McCain, thank you for your service to our country. A lot of people don't know that you're the most pro-life candidate running. They don't know that you've got the best record on the issue ...

A: Thank you, and yes, unlike some, I have always supported the right to life. But you should also know that -- and you may disagree with me here -- but that I support stem cell research, and ...

Now, why in the world would you go out of your way to ignore an issue in which you agree with your audience, and then focus on a divisive issue?  It makes no sense at all, and it's certainly not something that any advisor worth his salt would have recommended.  It's sure as heck not "staying on message."  And you can be sure Romney wouldn't have made this mistake.

*** Update - 9:00: WaPost reports: "Another McCain Staffer Departs - Mary Kate Johnson, the finance director for Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) presidential campaign, has resigned -- joining a stampede of senior staff on Tuesday."

There are so many political maxims they are breaking that it's almost a perfect object lesson in what not to do.  In this case, they should have gotten all the bad news out at once.  As a friend emailed me: "Why the constant bleeding?"  He adds: "I mean, just by watching the movie Office Space you should know these. Fire everyone at the end of the week and all at once."

McCain vs Kemp
John McCain is the new Jack Kemp. He has all the credentials in the world. However, he is simply a terrible campaigner, much like Jack Kemp was in 1988 and 1996.

Although they are both passionate about different issues, they both have to be two of the biggest disappointments on the national stage.

McCain's next move
Yesterday on the floor of the Senate, John McCain demonstrated the passion and conviction that could still mark him as a great senator unfortunately he has never wanted to be a great senator or leader in the Senate - he wants to be President and that isn't going to happen. If he would simply recognize that fact and use the time he has left on earth to being the best Senator from Arizona and a leader in the Senate, he can and will make a difference. He could raise funds for his colleagues and campaign to regain control and would make an historic Armed Services Committee Chairman replacing Carl Levin. His exchange with Barbara Boxer yesterday was classic McCain. Now we need more of the same. I'm pleading with you Senator, focus all your attention on your day job.

Well said. Let me just add that at this point, he had better get busy in the Senate, because he is going to have to do some serious salvaging of support from the Republican base here in Arizona.

one leg
McCain has lost one leg so far. His much vaunted and respected GOTV has gone up in smoke. However, he still has 20/10 % of Adults/likely voters who prefer him nationally. He can hang in until his poll numbers drop below Huckabee.

He may not win the nomination but he can raise issues in the campaign, be a factor in the debates and hurt rivals and maybe prevent them from getting the nomination.

It remains to be seen if he will try to help or hurt Thompson. Thompson hurt the McCain candidacy as much as Immigration. Thompson is sucking up votes and money that would have gone to McCain. If Thompson were not in this McCain would have survived being on the wrong side of Immigration.

There are many things I respect about McCain but right now he is very dangerous to the other candidates. When he attacked Romney it hurt both of them as Rudy and Thompson got votes from both of them.

It probably makes more sense for him to try to get votes from Rudy and Thompson for a come back than Romney. However, Romney is leading in NH and McCain needs NH. I think it is easier for McCain to move votes from Rudy and Thompson as much of their support is soft and based on the idea that they can win. One or both of them could easily make a bad gaff and drop quickly.

McCain's Ideology
"Now, why in the world would you go out of your way to ignore an issue in which you agree with your audience, and then focus on a divisive issue?"

It's because McCain wants to tell us what to think. He knows best for each and every one of us.

Matt Welch wrote about this phenomenon in the LA Times last November: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-op-welch26nov26,0,3481494.story

I disagree about Thompson hurting McCain
BG wrote "Thompson hurt the McCain candidacy as much as Immigration"

I disagree. Thompson had nothing to do with McCain not being able to get support from conservative primary voters. They just won't him whether Thompson is in the race or not.

I would even go so far as to say one of the reasons Thompson was able to get such a strong start is that McCain could not connect with these voters and they were looking for any "real conservative" candidate who could win to enter the field. Thompson capitalized on this before anyone else did.
BG writes: Wednesday, July, 11, 2007 12:23 PM
Depends
Not all of Thompson's support is coming from Conservatives. The last poll I looked at had equal numbers of liberals, moderates and conservatives. Over time that will change as people become more aware of Thompson's positions.

Thompson's rise in the polls comes from an image and that takes support from the other 3 major candidates. He fills a void to some extent but he definitely is taking money and votes that would normally go to the other candidates if he were not in the race.

Thompson used to be as close with McCain as Lindsey Graham is today. His candidacy definitely has had an impact on support for McCain especially in money.

HALF A MAVRICK
Being half a mavrick is like having half a cancer. When running for President I supported
him with great energy! There is such a thing as knowing to much about a candidate! Just when you think you have a "Statesman" he morphs into a
cheap politician. Anyone else notice that Arizona
just passed the most severe anti illegal immigration law in the nation when Mccain was
pledging his political lifes blood for its passage? Senator Kyl also! Talk about spitting in the eye of your supporters! He couldn't have
been that uninformed as to the wishes and best interest of the State and the Nation. Wanting to be liked by liberals is a malady in the Republican party and seems to particularly affect
"old warriors" (Dole, Lott, Bush 41 for example)
who have "lost their step". Feeling sympathy for
these poor unfortunate, illiterate, diseased people who had the misfortune of being born in
a politically corrupt country seems compasionate
and admirable until you stop to think that the
money (social services) the politicians are using to attract them are the same rapidly vanishing dollars which are supposed to provide
for even eighth generation American citizens who
will be screwed by the process!

Mccain became infected by Washingtons airborne
viruses.

McCAIN IS VERY SIMILAR TO GENERAL
CUSTER!......CUSTER performed masterfully during the CIVIL WAR....Therefore, he must be smart at fighting Indians?............McCain's staff has a luxury that General Custer's uninformed troops did not have............................THEY CAN SEE LITTLE BIG HORN ON THE HORRIZON!!!!!!!
