Governor Palin's Future
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 3:18 PM
Amanda notes below that Sarah Palin has multiple options when it comes to pursuing a seat in the U.S. Senate.

In my opinion, however, she'd be crazy to go that route.  A great deal of her appeal comes from her "outsider" status.  Why would she want to risk falling victim to the inside-the-Beltway shackles that comes with being one of 100 in the US Senate?

Any theory that serving as a senator would give Palin "credibility" is misguided.  Her colleagues across the aisle realize she has the potential to be a rising Republican star, and the idea that she'd be given opportunities for legislative accomplishment, especially in an overwhelming Democrat chamber, is as naive as believing, for example, that Democrats were willing to let John McCain to fly in and take credit for negotiating a bipartisan bailout bill.

Sarah Palin doesn't need the approbation of the chattering classes that might be wooed through a Hillaryesque detour into the Senate.  What she does need is the opportunity to dispel some of the doubts that were raised on some Americans' parts by her shaky (and mishandled) MSM television interviews.  And here's how I'd do it.

If I were Governor Palin, I would do a bang-up job as Governor, and win re-election overwhelmingly.  In the meantime, I would (1) learn Spanish; (2)  burnish my credentials as an energy expert (that's not an issue that's going away); and (3) convene a group of friendly experts to school me in foreign policy. It wouldn't hurt to hire a professional stylist at least for a while to hone her look and dress sense.

I'd skip the 2012 election, and aim for 2016, making visible appearances all the while, and campaigning like mad for Republicans in 2010 and 2012.

The Governor finishes her second term in January of 2015.  That gives almost two years exclusively for travel and speech-making a la Ronald Reagan circa 1975, and for fundraising and running a campaign.

obama is a fake
obama is an outsider, from far out, from kenya, not even an AMERICAN! there is no proof of him being born in AMERICA! he may have been in the senate but he is still an outsider!
novote4obabam writes: Wednesday, November, 12, 2008 10:24 PM
spanish, yea right, NOT!
so what about the spanish population, come to AMERICA you learn ENGLISH, thats what you do, no need for us to learn spanish, you learn ENGLISH, ENGLISH! GO SARAH, we will soon learn about obama and his destruction for AMERICA, we will need SARAH to run in 2012! SARAH FOR PERSIDENT! maybe she will destroy the devil, once and for all!

I watched Fox news with Greta, and she had a great interview with Sarah Palin, and she oozes intelligence way beyond Obama has!

She dumped Biden and would destroy Obama.
Obama would have to speak his own words not a Teleprompter. She would put him to shame

Yeah Sarah is the only bright intelligent Star that ran in that whole Campaign.

The more you talk about Sarah the less I have to hear about The Welfare King and that Suits me fine!

Heck Chavez
Heck where does spanish help? Why not come to America and be an American, you know speak English? We are Americans not Mexico of America.
Chavez speaks spanish and talks out his Butt, on a daily basis!

How bout Mexicans talk English?

Learning Spanish is always a good idea
It doesn't matter whether we like it or not, the Spanish speaking population is growing. It is more important to instruct this burgeoning population in the principles of our founding fathers than trying to change how they communicate.
Tazzmax writes: Wednesday, November, 12, 2008 6:06 PM
Learn Spanish?
BS, BS, BS, what kind of boneheaded requirement is that?

Is that some kind of "multi culti" PC BS?

the only problem with your argument is the line "competent legislature". That sounds like an oxymoron. I don't think Washington right now is swimming with those so how exactly would being there benefit her? I'd rather she spend 8 years running a state with a record of the state prospering and growing rather than in obscurity in Washington DC. If she travels internationally on energy matters (very much a possibility if she wants to become an expert) and takes every opportunity to learn, there should not be any problem with experience.

It's funny to me how so many think because a person works in a group of 50 and votes for issues where what the majority wants is what happens, is more or better job experience than a person working on their own where their one decision is the one that counts.
tangoromeo writes: Wednesday, November, 12, 2008 4:37 PM
I agree
I think it's an excellent plan and should be followed to a tee. I think Palin needs to stay away from the Senate, otherwise, she risks ruining the one thing about her that is very unique and appealing - her being an outsider.
bryce1 writes: Wednesday, November, 12, 2008 4:34 PM
If Palin has a brain in her head
She will jump at the chance to win a Senate seat. Every poll, pre-election and exit, showed the majority of American's doubted her ability to serve at the top. If she wants a shot at 2012 she needs to be seen as a competent legislature on the national scene, not in Alaska where convicted felons are viable candidates as long as they bring home enough pork.

That assumes Palin has a brain in her head, something I'm suspicious of after hearing her giggling inanities during the fake Sarkozy phone call.

Palin favored over McCain
All of McCain's "Insider" did not help him, it is being an "Outsider" that made Palin favored over McCain. Most Senators are bought, I want to see Palin run on her agenda.
Joe writes: Wednesday, November, 12, 2008 4:13 PM
After shooting some of McCain's staff
for general principals and to prevent those rabid curs from menacing the public, she might stay on as Alaska's governor, with ambitions for 2012.

A Senate run? Please, most Senators suck.

"... riding many a mile."
The beauty of Gov. Palin, (beyond the superficial,) is her distance from the sharp elbows and dirty laundry of Capitol Hill.

She's the chief executive of a far away frontier place. Like the fabled circuit preacher or range rider of old, she'll ride in to stand for the country, coming into view from over the ridge beyond the scarp of the hills.

I completely agree with Ms. Liebau's view that Gov. Plain needs to:
1) Finish her term as a solid Governor, untainted and respected.

2) Continue fielding energy issues and keeping them foremost in her mind and that of her state's voters.

3) Find and use savvy persons with strong International Relations, Geo-Political and Historical knowledge as 'tutors.'

Get some that are not hide bound to Academe or Think Tanks alone. Find trustworthy and intellectual outsiders that can speak and write and know their stuff. By the time Gov. Palin hits the national stage again she should be able to field the arcane and the adversarial inquiry. She should be able to discuss the battle for Aden and its relationship to today as well as discuss the rescue in Kolwezi and the historical flow from that moment in time.

4) Spanish ... too be sure.

5) Her appearance I think was fine. Personal buyers and coaches tend to be effete and as useless to development as 'wedding planners.'

Sarah Palin is a winner, not a Senator.
arcman writes: Wednesday, November, 12, 2008 3:57 PM
Better off as a Governor
I still think she is better off staying a Governor. Until this year we have not had a Senator elected as President since Kennedy. LBJ was VP; Nixon, Governor; Ford, VP; Carter, Governor; Reagan, Governor; Bush, VP; Clinton, and Bush, Governors. By the nature of the job, Senators are generally ill equipped to be President.

Stylist?
Is that why Katie Couric copied her hairstyle?
Martha writes: Wednesday, November, 12, 2008 3:43 PM
it's only stupid...
...if being an insider has been working.

It hasn't.
dskerman writes: Wednesday, November, 12, 2008 3:39 PM
this "outsider" thing is frankly stupid
I'm sorry, but the idea that being an outsider should legitimately be considered a plus is ridiculous.

If you attempted to apply that logic when filling any other job in the country you would be laughed at.

The sooner otherwise intelligent people like you stop fawning over "outsider" status, the sooner we can get back to a system which rewards traits which actually matter when legislating and governing.

Martha writes: Wednesday, November, 12, 2008 3:39 PM
yeah
I agree with 2016.
