Michelle Obama's "Moving the Bar" Speech

I played all of Pastor Wright's address and q-and-a from today's National Press Club speech today, as well as a lengthy interview with major General Rick Lynch, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division in Iraq, so there wasn't much time for anything except some excerpts from Michelle Obama's campaign speech on Friday night.

The clips I played generated a lot of angry e-mail.  Duane will post the clips here later tonight.  Listen for yourself and decide whether Michelle Obama is conducting a campaign of unity and hope, or one of bitterness and anger.

No matter how hard the political parties try to sell the concept, all it is doing is frustrating voters because we DO have differences and the two-party system is the mechanism we have relied on to work them out. To pretend that all our leaders have to do is join hands and conspire to silence anyone who disagrees by deeming them to be "divisive" and not entitled to the discussion is foolish. All it is doing is securing the lid on the pressure cooker. If we don't want shooting on the streets, we need to be able to talk through our differences. We need to recognize that differences exist and invite everyone to the negotiation table. Conservatives included. This is going to be a great year for conservatives, not so good for everyone else.

I hope this personnal campaign of your's proclaiming the congregation of Rev Wright as radical and not of the main stream blows up big time in your face. It's thinly veiled rascism and bigotry.


He's a good man who served in our miltary and has done a heck of a lot for the black commuuity in his area. A community that you are all too ready to judge based on sound bites with almost no true understanding of it.

This is just one more example of religious right snobbery and I find it disgusting.

You, Mr Hannity, Mr. O'Reily may find yourself on the front of a major uprising coming from the black community because of your blatent disrespect towards them.

I'll take Rev Wrights form of Christianity over the self-rightous, intolerant and pious form held by the far right of this country.

Wright is saying that "THE black church" is being attacked, not what his words. What exactly is THE black church? As opposed to THE white church? That he has such a large congregation is disturbing and not to be taken as validating his views. The KKK had a very large following at one time too. Wright is just grasping for power and, like Shoeless John, there is no one he won't throw under the bus to accomplish that... even ruin the prospects of having a black president for at least a generation. This is not a man who cares about "his people" but only himself. I can't imagine any black candidate will bet a fair shake at being president if Obama's legacy ends by being lynched by his own "friends".

They raised the bar. They rasied the FEAR. He's too black. He's not black enough. They actually had the audacity to say he had a "spiritual advisor" who said, "G*D DAMN AMERICA".
THEY SAID THAT. Then they said about this very good, good, very close, close, friend of Barack's said, America wanted to kill all blacks by inventing the AIDS virus.
Seriously, they said that. And, they meant it. They really and truly meant that.

Can you believe that, people?

I mean, this is a very, very, very scary place for us all to be in. They may come to you next----sayin' these very same things about you, or, your husband.

There IS an opportunity for Obama here
But he is going to need help from like-minded friends in the black community. He was criticized early on by his fellow blacks as not being black enough, that he is not descended from slaves, that he is only half-black. Now he is being stabbed in the back by the latest race-monger wannabe who he is exploiting his newfound fame as a springboard to join Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton as the "go to" guy for the white liberal elites to use in keeping blacks down. There is a way out of this for Obama but he will need help. It would not be good for this country for his candidacy to end because the most extreme racists of his race take him out and blame white racism for his failure. There are commentors on this string who have already jumped to the white racism blame. We COULD be getting past that but those these people should look in the mirror before accusing others of white racism.

Have you been reading these threads? Your fellow righties couldn't give a darn about the country or the future of race relations. They just want to win- even to the extent of calling for race riots at the Democratic convention.

Personally, I agree with you. I want Obama to do now what his loyalty wouldn't let him do earlier- tell Wright where to get off. And I want other Black leaders to do the same. Maybe a joint press conferene with Bill Cosby and Oprah, directed at African-Americans, not whites. It might kill Obama's 2008 candidacy, but in the long run he'd win by losing.

I do not want this election decided over Jeremiah Wright. Jeremiah Wright is a real heel for doing this to Obama. What a prima donna *******.

Now this is a chance to see if Obama has any common sense and can kick Wright to the curb. If this was Hillary I would assume this was an orcheastrated manuver to avoid an October surprise. But the timing just before Indiana and North Carolina is bad too. Obama needs to be smart and distance himself quickly from his mentor, pastor and spirtual dad.

I would just assume have McCain and Obama debate the issues, if only to show you there is a substantive difference between them on policy.

See? We can agree on something once in a while. Not that I back Obama but I think for him to go out this way is a major American opportunity wasted. Even if he turned out to be a very liberal president and got booted in 2012, we would at least have demonstrated that America is the most open society on earth and that maybe the black culture has grown up a bit and can sweep everyone up on a positive note. For Obama to now knuckle under would make it impossible for whites and blacks alike to consider a black candidate for high office for at least a generation. It would be impossible for any thoughtful white person to ignore the ugly reality of the sinister and backwards forces of hate that drive such a black culture. I was watching Wright's performance at the National Press Club and couldn't help but notice the ubiquitous gang-like goons with the sunglasses hanging around everywhere. Not exactly the Pope. This guy is going to eclipse Obama? Even if Obama loses the election, it is absolutely essential that he do something. Unlike many people here, I have made it very clear that I am not afraid of an Obama presidency. He is NOT the reason we should vote for McCain. He needs to do something to reassure people like me that we are not naive.

If any other candidate running for President, kicked off one of his campaigns at the home of an unrepentant terrorist, that candidate would be finished.

The notion of "guilt by association" is neither automatically valid or invalid; it depends on the type and nature of the association.

If the association is merely accidental or incidental, and does not in any way provide a measure of support or sanction for the other party, then one bears no responsiblity for the other party's views or actions.

Obama's association with Wright, however, is clearly NOT merely accidental or incidental. His choice to join, attend and monetarily support Wright's church means that he has (to at least some extent) helped to EMPOWER Wright to spread his noxious, racist lunacy. And since we NOW know beyond doubt that Obama WAS fully aware of Wright's views, THAT indeed makes Obama "guilty by association".

Furthermore, having been caught helping empower this lunatic, Obama has compounded his guilt by condemning the statements, but refusing to condemn the man. This is a declaration that Wright's views may be wrong but are nonetheless TOLERABLE and do not warrant any moral condemnation.

Nothing justifies supporting and tolerating the spread of racial hatred, hysteria and paranoia. Obama IS guilty, and he's doomed unless he admits it, apologizes, and breaks off from Wright completely. And even then, he has to hope the American people will not wonder about the 20 years when he failed to do so.

So once that story runs, from that point on, the Kimberly's of the world will regurgitate all three accusations as if they were established truths.

I'm working hard to put my own in a position where they can do well for themselves in this land of opportunity without taking handouts from de guv-mint and most definitely not still living in my house when they're 40!!! Being white and with good day jobs, we get no help from de guv-mint at all and still have to fill out those annoying FASFA forms. How many tax dollars are spent on that useless bureaucratic maze?

Michelle still talks as if they are applying for a community activist job with some neighborhood commission with hints at subsidized higher education care of Uncle Sam. It falls flat.
