Unanimity on the DeMint Earmarks Amendment
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 4:55 PM

Well, that was quite the turn-around:

The Senate voted Tuesday to shine more light on thousands of expensive pet projects buried in legislation every year after the new Democratic majority bowed to a successful push by Republicans to make new disclosure rules even tougher than originally planned.

The vote was 98-0 to require senators to reveal the water projects, hiking trails, defense contracts or tax breaks for specific industries they insert in legislation. That unanimity came five days after Democrats, holding a slim majority, were thwarted by a GOP-led rebellion in advancing their own version of "earmark" reform.

Bringing transparency to earmarks is a major objective of the ethics and lobbying reform legislation that the Senate has been debating since the new congressional session began.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who last week led opposition to the Republican approach, lauded the final product, saying it "combined the best ideas from both sides of the aisle."

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., the author of the amendment to the ethics bill, said the ability of the two sides to come together on the issue was "a good signal for the new Congress."

Nice of Reid to acknowledge the worthiness of the amendment, after he spent a couple days trying to squelch it on the floor despite the fact that most of the language therein had already been passed by Pelosi's house. Ahh well, the good news is earmarks will be more transparent, which means everyone wins but self-centered politicians.

And, we won this fight, in no small part because of attention brought to the subject by bloggers-- left and right-- who stay on the pork-dealers' cases day in and day out. Thanks to all of them.

Of course, Reid hasn't learned much, and is back to blocking legislation to reduce wasteful spending.

And, while I'm on the subject of liberal bloggers, please keep Jane Hamsher of FireDogLake in your prayers and thoughts. She's been diagnosed with breast cancer for a third time, and I wish her a quick, smooth recovery-- or, as quick and smooth as it can get when you're beating cancer. It goes without saying that she's a blogger with whom I have many political disagreements, but there aren't two sides to this debate. Good luck, Jane, and take care.

Flying Pigs & Flinging Pork
Does this mean anything? So the bills get all prettied up with pink, yellow, and green highlighters. Does this mean there will be any less pork flying around? Yeah, when pigs actually fly. This is just more hollow political grandstanding, aint it?

Earmarks Amendment
I'll bet old Harry is seething by having to capitulate to a great amendment after having to be reminded several times that Queen Nancy approved. Harry is going to be in hot water with his constituents because all of the pork he has brought to his state certainly has influenced his election.

But let's not get too excited about this earmark legislation. Its a political move by the left to sucker Americans into thinking their government is going to waste less money. All they need do is look at what the Democrats have already accomoplished-with the help of the RINO's.

They have sent the message to the American people that they ARE going to succeed in wasting a big chunk of our taxes to fund the intentional murder, and eventual cloning, of millions of human beings in the embryonic stage soley to experiment on them. If this isn't 21st century eugenics I don't know why the uproar over the Nazi's push to create the superior race.

Then the increase in the minimum wage. A burden on employers. A higher cost to employers means higher costs to us. Of course it will also encourage more illegal aliens to cross our borders. Sure good for the country according to Bushie and his liberal friends.

Also fighting to allow college students, who already got a great deal from the taxpayer to pay less interest on these loans. Who is going to foot the bill? The taxpayer of course. And the loan companies will increase the cost of loans to others since they will have to make up the difference.

But it doesn't matter to the liberals. They are experts at designing new programs that confiscate more of our hard earned dollars to fund their pet projects.
